A Bed, PicMonkey and Bronson Pinchot

March 28, 2012 at 8:52 am by Claudia

We need a new bed. Not a new headboard, or new sheets or pillows. A new mattress. Our bed has been with us a long time – too long – and it has overstayed it’s welcome. I wake up several times during the night. Every morning, I wake up with an aching back, hip and shoulder. When I first arise, I walk around hunched over and I look ridiculous. We are going to begin saving our pennies as good mattresses are not inexpensive. I’d love a king-sized bed as Don is 6’4″ and I am 5’8″ – but our tiny bedroom would be filled with BED. Maybe a California King? Or maybe just another Queen. Whatever the end result, a new mattress is on my urgent wish list.
PicMonkey

I wrote about PicMonkey, a wonderful photo editing site, in a previous post. Did you know that the founders of PicMonkey were formerly with Picnik? That’s why I like it so much! There’s a great interview with the founders of PicMonkey on ShePosts. Here is the link. Read it. You’ll get excited – especially when they talk about the Collage Tool they are coming up with. Hold on to your hats, they’ve got lots of wonderful plans in the works.

The Bronson Pinchot Project

Have you seen this new show? It’s on the DIY Network and I’m crazy about it. Bronson Pinchot, a very talented actor, is also an extremely talented restorer of older homes. He fell in love with a house in a small town in Pennsylvania and restored it. He has since bought several other homes in the same town that he is also restoring. First of all, I love his taste and clear passion for older homes. He’s also very funny, slightly eccentric in the best sense of the word and has surrounded himself with a colorful cast of characters who help him realize his renovation dreams. In a world of DIY shows hosted by pretty or impossibly handsome young things (which make my eyes glaze over and bore me to tears) this show really stands out. Take note, HGTV, with your choice of ridiculously young, model-like hosts.

The first season is just about to end – I think there were 6 or 7 episodes. I’ve been watching it on the “On Demand” channel on my cable. If you click the above link, you can find out when it’s airing. I think you’ll really like it.

And now, on to The Tempest, Act III. It’s supposed to rain today so it’s shaping up to be a work-indoors-kind-of-day. Yesterday I worked outside most of the day. The garden beds are all cleaned out. Hurrah!

Your bed is very pretty! I know how you feel about waking up in pain. WE got a sleep # bed about 6 years ago and have never regretted it. Got a deal on it otherwise, we may not have got it. We are both short so we don’t need a long bed. Going to check out Bronson Pinchot new show on Demand soon! Thanks for the heads up on that! Pic Monkey looks intesting too. Storms expected later today for our neck of the woods. ~Hugs, Patti

I discovered Bronson Pinchot’s show the other week when they had on a marathon. So far I like it!
I so remember watching Perfect Strangers.
I know what you mean about the bed. We need a new mattress also. The couch has become my friend at times.

Two words Claudia. SLEEP NUMBER. I avoided back surgery by getting a different bed.

Thanks for the tip-off about Bronson Pinchot’s show. I love a good DIY show– as opposed to real estate shows. I need ideas for fixin’ what I have.

I checked out PicMonkey the other day (after reading one of your posts)and I think that I’m going to love this whole photo editing thing. Can’t wait to see the upcoming collage feature!

I LOVE the drop caps. I’ll have to have you show me how. Yet I don’t want to seem to be copying you! I got bored with HGTV some time ago with all the young exuberant hosts, and it made my eyes glaze over as well. I’ve got to find the time to delve in PicMonkey. Claudia, if you could spare 20 minutes in the mornings, I know these yoga stretching exercises would help you. Otherwise, I’d be hunched over as I was at age 30. Also, I have a small pillow I made that I put into the curve in my side between tummy and chest, as I sleep on my side, and that helps.

Good morning Claudia, I’m enjoying the drop caps too! Thanks for sharing and introducing us to the Drop Cap project. They are gorgeous fonts.

Dave and I were fantasizing about what our next home’s master bedroom will look like. We now live in a tiny mid century ranch home and bought a king sized bed and new mattress a couple years ago. It takes up the whole room but I love it! If we are ever blessed with a major windfall I would love a room where I could put the bed on an angle so you could enjoy the beauty and structure of the sleigh bed. It sounds like a good day to work on your script.

I finally bought a new bed about a year ago, and it has made a world of difference. I no longer get up all hunched over. I got a latex bed, and it is perfect for me. I have heard good things about sleep number, too. I think you just need to go in a few bed stores and test different beds. Bronson Pinchot also has a very nice blog.

    hi claudia!

your lovely bedding (sigh …) caught my eye and so here i am during my break or pause for lunch. i actually think you’d like my lunch it’s my warmed up concoction of sauteed garlic, onion, roasted red peppers and tofu over angel hair, mixed together with white wine, lemon juice and olive oil.

anyhoo … thanks for the great info on pic-something (will scroll back up and click) and balki’s new show!

    happy drop-capping!

I’ve had back surgery and a fusion, and I tried the sleep number but it didn’t work for me. I went with a really good Sealey and I love it. One day I went to the mattress store and I was the only customer and the lady was so helpful, I tried out different mattresses and narrowed it down. So you and Don need to visit the store together. Also, do you use a leg pillow? It really helps w/the back.

Best of luck saving for the mattress, Claudia. It’s a huge expense but a restful night’s sleep is so important. I’m a fine one to talk…. my mattress is ancient. Thank you for the link to the Bronson Pinchot program… I’ll definitely be watching it!

I’m thoroughly enjoying the Bronson Pinchot Project. There’s only one problem with it: it’s too short! I would’ve loved to go on his shopping expedition with him to that Hurricane Irene town … and just more… I’ve been watching it On Demand too :)

Claudia, I swear we live in a parallel universe sometimes! Just yesterday I told Kerry we desperately need to think about getting a new mattress. Neither of us get a good night’s sleep anymore. I start tossing and turning after about 5 to 6 hours in bed and have to get up. We bought our mattress (and not a top notch one, by any means) when Courtney was an infant. She is now 23 years old!

We do have a king size and we probably should have something smaller as our bed almost goes wall to wall, but since we are both sprawling sleepers, I can’t see us downsizing.

Also, I know you and I have the same shower curtain/desk skirt and the same dog bed, but do we also have the same bedspread? Yours looks so much like ours! Here it is:

I’ll have to watch for that show. I haven’t seen it but it sounds great!

Your headboard is beautiful- I’m thinking its time for us to get a new mattress too but they are a major investment- but I guess a good nights sleep is worth a lot, too. I love our king size bed- even though we only have about 2 feet clearance on either side. When your dogs think its ok to sleep on the bed with you (where did they get that idea?), a bigger bed is better

I’d heard of the Bronson Pinchot project but we don’t get the DIY channel- and then I found it on demand- YEAH!

While you’re saving for a good mattress, you might want to think about a topper – we got a memory foam topper, but I wouldn’t say no to a down topper….and we had a ‘pillow top’ mattress. We got a pretty fair deal from Sams (ours is a three inch foam, I think).

You don’t want to buy cheap when it comes to a good mattress. Finding the right one is worth every penny. Don’t fall for those very expensive strange beds like the Sleep Number.

Thanks for the recommendation about the show. I’ve pretty much quit watching HGTV. Those whiney kids saying they couldn’t possibly buy a house without granite countertops make me ill. Just watched a couple of Bronson’s…great show!

    Claudia,
Although lumpy your bed has awesome English style! Love it. I’m also longing for a king but my husband is afraid it will encourage our 3 to sleepover more often than now. Yes they are ridiculously expensive. As for BP, I’ve been singing his praises since episode 1. I do wish he had a bit more ‘stuff’ but boy does he have style!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
