It must be January, right? This must be a photo from years gone by that I’m reposting.
Ummm, no.
On this quiet Sunday morning in October, this is the view from my kitchen door.
Stunned doggies have had to deal with a slippery trip up the hill to the dog corral.
You can see that there are still leaves on some of the trees.
The contrast of the beautifully colored leaves against the snow is striking. That’s our clothesline at the top of the photo.
I shoveled a few times before Don got home. If you’d driven by, you would have seen me out in the front yard with broom in hand, shaking the snow off bushes, trees and hydrangeas. Don’s usual half hour trip home turned into a 90 minute white-knuckled drive on country roads full of cars that had spun out. More than once, he thought he was going to have to abandon the car. Thankfully, he arrived home safely.
The lights in our house flickered countless times and I was sure we would lose power. We cooked dinner early in case we lost the use of our electric stove. Unbelievably, for there are hundreds of thousands without power today, we didn’t. We are very lucky.
This will all be a faint memory in a day or two, as temperatures rise and everything melts.
It’s still October, isn’t it? This all feels like some bizarre dream in which somehow I have jumped forward in time; where the calendar tells me one thing but my eyes tell me another.
Happy Sunday. We’re grateful this morning.
Driving in that can be treacherous. Glad Don made it home safely. You must have worked hard to keep all that shoveling done for heaven sakes. Snuggle indoors today and stay warm. Warm socks, slippers and a blanket over your lap.. now that sounds wonderful!

I remember needing to wear warm clothes under our Halloween costumes when we were kids because we were Trick or Treating in Wisconsin snow. Even so, it wasn’t a regular occurrence and we were bummed to wear bulky costumes.
Glad Don got home safely. People forget how to drive in snow from year to year…and people with SUVs (wrongly) think that they can stop faster in their vehicles. Makes it a little less safe when people drive the same way they do on dry pavement.
We added a generator to the house after Hurricane Charlie. I don’t think I’d ever live anywhere again without one.

Welcome to the Twilight Zone. I can remember a couple of Halloweens with frost or snow while living in Canada, but not in recent years – and especially not here in FL. Hope it all melts and the plants aren’t too worse for wear. Ann
Brrrrrrrrrrrr…………. I’m chilly here and I think it’s about 50 or so…. I hate being cold…. try to cozy up and enjoy it somehow! Hopefully it’ll all be gone for the little ones tomorrow.

Glad Don got home safely. We are still in Maine. Flight cancelled but at least I got an e-mail and we didn’t go to the airport!!!!!

Wow this was crazy! They declared a state of emergency for a lot of the counties here! My husband and daughter got as far as Westchester last night and were turned away! No hotel rooms and a million cars trying to get home! They ended up driving to Staten Island to stay with family last night!!!! 6 hours of driving in snow and sleet! And, cell phones aren’t working-so I didn’t know where they were till a few hours ago! I’m not ready for Winter. Stay warm!

Glad you didn’t lose power. Hope you’re right about it melting soon. I live in Michigan and we missed this storm but soon we’ll be dealing with snow, too. I love your blog–been reading it for a long time but don’t think I’ve ever commented before. I don’t have a blog so I can’t participate, but I’m loving the reality shots. Hope you keep it up.

With an unheated 8 acre greenhouse sitting open to the elements in my back yard, I feel serious stress with just the thought of getting an early snow! Snow is very heavy and when left to accumulate, can take down the entire structure. Your recent snowfall in the East has reminded us that we NEED to get the heat turned on before we get snow in the west!
