Books and Puzzles

December 8, 2022 at 9:17 am by Claudia

Finished. The puzzle is from Lawrence King and the title is The World of the Harlem Renaissance. Loved every bit of time spent working on it. Of course, a couple of hours later, I realized I needed another puzzle, so I ordered one that was on sale and that could be delivered today. I am not kidding when I say that I HAVE to have a puzzle in the works. They keep me calm when my mind is full of worry or fear – and let’s face it, for most of us, that’s a lot of the time. Last year and the year before, it was a wintertime thing. Now, it’s an all-the-time thing.

I tried to take photos of the dollhouse interiors/Christmas trees yesterday but it was so dark outside and inside that the photos were depressing, which is not what we want at Christmas time, is it? I’ll try again today. It will be partly cloudy but it’s much lighter outside. If not today, tomorrow.

I’m almost finished with Slough House, part of Mick Herron’s brilliant series about British Spies – Slough House being the place where spies who have screwed up are sent. This is one of the best series I have ever read. Herron writes beautifully and the books are a wonderful combination of humor, irony, and can’t-put-it-down action. I’ve read, I believe, seven of them and there’s one more that was published this year. It’s still in hardcover. I am a big, big fan.

The library informed me that my copy of the new Anthony Horowitz, The Twist of a Knife, has come in, so I’ll head on over there today to pick it up.

So happy to hear that Brittney Griner has been released by Russia and is on her way home. Prayers that Paul Whelan is eventually allowed to come home, as well.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

the puzzle looks fun and the book sounds interesting. enjoy! and thanks for more inspiration.

we are to get a “winter-y mix” of precipitation today. cold enough for purely snow? will take it. warm enough for rain only? great. having ice under or on top of snow? no thanks!

standard apartment pre-inspection by my landlord is set for tomorrow morning and then he will accompany the city inspector next tuesday so i best get ready.

    happy, safe thursday to everyone.

Love the colours in the puzzle, all pinks and mauves. Canada, too, is praying Paul Whelan will be released soon. He has been incarcerated there for 4 years, I believe. Lovely news that Brittaney Griner has been released. That’s what our crazy world needs is good news. Enjoy your new puzzle and your new library book. Hugs, Elaine

We do need good news – desperately. I’m so happy she’s home. I fear she’ll have a long recovery from this horrendous experience.

      Stay safe, Elaine.

I’m so glad Brittney Griner was released, and hope, too, that Paul Whelan will soon be back.

I completely understand your feeling about having a diversion…puzzles…so much stress! Playing games on my phone has been it for me, surprisingly. Anxiety, boredom, stress…games are a way for me to focus on just the game, not letting my thoughts wander.

I love being able to order books from the library… happy reading!

We do what takes us to a place of calm. I play some online games as well.

      Thanks, Barrie.

(Long time lurker). You mentioned Slough House by Mick Herron. There is a series on Apple TV+ based on the novels. It’s called ‘Slow Horses’ and stars Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce and others. Season 2 started last week, and I’ve just learned the series has been renewed for 2 more seasons. We really enjoy it (we’re big Gary Oldman fans), and it’s great to hear that you are a fan of the book series. I will add them to our to-be-read list.

Yes, I know and I love Gary Oldman, but I have a longtime policy of not watching television versions of book series that I love. The characters live fully in my imagination and I don’t want a production company’s version of those characters to intrude.

      The books are brilliant.

      Stay safe.

I know what you mean about bad light and shooting. It’s just impossible. I love that puzzle — great colors; I can see why you loved doing it. I was terribly upset Paul Whelan wasn’t released. I’m glad Britney is coming home, of course, except I think it should have been Whelanf (or both), especially considering the criminal they traded her for. And what the heck was she thinking doing that in the first place? You can’t be more stupid than to take something in (or out) of Russia that isn’t legal and she’s smart enough she should have known that. Or maybe she isn’t. Not that she deserved all she got for what she did; she didn’t, and I don’t want anyone held hostage but this feels like an unfair trade under the circumstances. The fellow released should have brought BOTH of them home. Considering that it was her or no one, I’m glad she’s back and no one should have to go through that, but I cannot imagine the angst of the Whelan family after four years. It completely breaks my heart.

It breaks my heart too. The Whelan family issued a statement supporting and cheering on the release of Brittney. The problem is that Russia WILL NOT release him. They’ve accused him of being a spy, which is very different than what they were charging Griner with.

The Biden administration wanted both of them to be released.

      Stay safe.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
