Books, Puzzles, and Teachers

February 3, 2025 at 9:40 am by Claudia

It has begun. But just barely. The campaign to preserve my sanity and peace of mind is still ongoing. This little puzzle is part of it. The World of Miss Marple has not revealed itself yet, as it’s early in the process, but today should bring some more answers. The colors are a far too muted for my taste, but it is what it is.  I like these puzzles.

Don is almost better. He’s just dealing with residual nose blowing, etc. He certainly has more energy now, and that’s a good sign. We had some snow Sunday evening. I’d say we have an inch and a half on the ground. Pretty, but not too much. The landscape had been looking bleak and the snow will take care of that. Though, it’s cloudy today. We’re not seeing the blue skies and sun that often occur after a snowfall.

It’s taking me forever to finish books lately, and that has nothing to do with the quality of the book. It’s just me. I read every day but I don’t seem to be able to sit down and read a good chunk during the day. I read before I go to sleep, but that’s for about 10 minutes. I may try to force myself to sit down and READ this afternoon. The book I’m reading currently is excellent – The Cold Cold Ground. It’s by Adrian McKinty, and it’s a police procedural that occurs outside of Belfast during “The Troubles.” It’s the first book in a trilogy and it’s so good that I’ve already put the second book on hold at my local library. Nevertheless, I am inching my way through it. I just have to accept it, I guess. I think I’m easily distracted these days.

We watched Mr. Holland’s Opus  last night, which I hadn’t seen since it first came out 30 years ago. What a wonderful, uplifting movie! I cried at the end, as I did the first time I saw it. Richard Dreyfuss is excellent, of course. And so is the rest of the cast. If you, for some reason, haven’t ever seen it, you should. It speaks to role of teachers and the profound impact they can have on a student’s life. I’m not bragging, but I still hear from students that I had over 30 years ago about something I said or did that had a positive impact on them. It’s often something I had no idea about at the time. But we can and do make a difference. Gosh, I’m going to start crying again.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

We went up to Prescott this weekend to try and get away from all the horrible things going on in the world. It really affects me and I don’t need any more news to bring me down. We stayed at a hotel called the Hassayampa Inn which is a hotel on the historic register. I love it as it has so much character and just beautiful. We went through some of the antique stores and for some reason as I was going through them I was thinking about you. None of my friends are really into thrifting or decorating the way I do with things that have meaning to us. It was a wonderful weekend. Let’s hope this week has some more positive news. Happy you got your car fixed!

Claudia I love that movie and yes I cry every time I watch it. So inspiring. I too am having trouble finishing a book. I feel like I want to read and I either fall asleep or my mind wanders. So unlike me but these days the world is so unlike anything I’ve known. I will of course keep reading as it is usually my go to escape. Stay warm and work on your puzzles! Hugs!

I’m participating in a book “bingo” held by a local independent bookstore. Read 12 books that fit the categories on the bingo card within 2025. The completed card is turned in to the store for a drawing. This is the second year I’ve participated. I don’t participate specifically for the drawing but more so as a challenge to expand my reading choices.

I was likewise moved by Mr. Holland’s Opus. I have the movie soundtrack on CD.

Wow that looks like a hard puzzle, all shades of blue. Should give you quite a challenge.

I remember that movie but haven’t seen it in years as well. I remember taking my mom to see it. We have band/orchestra directors/members like crazy on her side of the family so it really resonated with her.

We actually have some snow on the ground but I’m staying inside and concentrating on some crafting to keep MY sanity, LOL.

    Take care,
    Kay

I saw the movie many, many years ago but don’t really remember much about it. I just remember I liked it. I think the world of teachers. We were always having former students coming by to see their 4thgrade teacher or 3rd grade teacher. One of the student’s had become a pro baseball player for the Atlanta Braves and he came by several times a year. You can get lot read with just 10 minutes a day. I made myself read 10 minutes twice a day and read so many books. Jane Eyre, Dracula, Sense and Sensibility, Anne of Green Gables and many more. All with just those two 10 minute reading periods. Hope you have a great week. Take care.

I recorded Mr. Holland — it’s a favorite of both Rick and me and he wasn’t here to see it so we’ll watch soon. I like Dreyfuss — Goodbye Girl was on earlier and that’s another I find charming in a cute kind of rom-com way (not my favorite genre but they made it work.) I’ve been in mystery mode again after a month of mixed things (just posted the year-end book review finally, and January’s to come soon). Finished off a Colin Dexter “Morse” while in the ER Sunday and now in a Martin Walker “Bruno” Then probably a non-fiction.

So glad Don is improving. And I can’t wait to see more of the puzzle!

Still very sore and headache, but getting by OK — nothing unexpected after the impact. Be careful out there!

To top it off, Monday half the house lost power (including fridge, stove, internet, micro). Turns out it’s a bad panel with a big replacement charge. It’s always something, isn’t it? And meanwhile, we are freaked about our country. Thank goodness for books! (And puzzles!)

I’m so freaked out! I’m glad you’re doing fairly well. So sorry about the power and the expense. Darn it! It’s always something.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
