Breakage

May 6, 2026 at 8:51 am by Claudia

Well. Yesterday was a strange day. It was abnormally warm  – in the eighties – and in the afternoon it got windy. It was noticeably windy but not anything I would have been overly worried about. At one point, I was sitting in the den and I heard what I thought was stuff moving around on the porch. So I went outside to make sure the plants were secure and there was a huge limb on the ground. It was from the big maple tree next to the house, a tree we love and a tree that has already lost several large limbs over the twenty years we’ve lived here.

I was shocked. The winds hadn’t been all that intense. I called Don and we carried it to the pile on the side of the property. It was a significant loss. Shortly after that, another  limb went down from a maple near the secret garden.

All of this was very upsetting and I’m in mourning today. I love our trees. I love all trees. The whole thing was so unexpected. The only thing I can come up with is that the winds (coming from the SSW) were in the ‘perfect’ position to cause damage, if only for a specific pocket of time – almost like that time we had that microburst.

It’s about 20 degrees cooler today and it’s going to rain.

What else?

My hair has been driving me crazy. It’s baby fine and I have been dealing with breakage. Consequently, it is many different lengths and unless I blow dry it, it looks terrible! I had been talking to Don about cutting my hair again (he loves to do that) and I decided the only thing to do was to cut it so that it matched the shorter breakage area around my face.

Five inches gone! This is the shortest my hair has been in years. It already looks healthier. Don thinks I look younger. I’m not so sure about that, but I like it. And it will be cooler for the summer.

No work on the dollhouse yesterday. I took a break to ponder what room I’ll tackle next.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

      Highly doubtful that will happen!

sorry about the loss of some tree branches. it is sad (we have a very-chop-happy city tree crew here). at least there’s a bright side that those branches didn’t hurt you, don or your home when they fell.

i bet your haircut looks great (you have beautiful hair and a hair-cutter who loves you very much)! i haven’t always liked my own haircuts at first, either, but they always felt/feel better so i go with that … something that feels good.

had a nice walk this morning, made even better for it being chilly (41 degrees). now waiting for the hoa president to show up with a guy to talk about re-doing some driveways, including ours. after that my sister and i plan to go see “devil wears prada 2”. hopefully the 10:30 am matinee to avoid crowds and noise. i have rarely liked a sequel, but this one has stanley tucci in it so there’s that.

hope you, don and everyone else have a good day. stay safe.

Hi Claudia. I am with you and the trees. As soon as the leaves come out the old branches are “heavier” in the wind (all those leaves are little sails…) it is Mother Nature’s way of giving trees “haircuts” as the new year’s growth begins. The weaker stuff falls. I know it is alarming! I had a huge Silver Maple tree in my back yard and had to take it down several years ago. It was a danger to my house (Silver Maples are “weedier” than other maples and drop limbs easily) and the neighbors too. I couldn’t sleep with the worries. It was time to let it go (80 ft. tall 15 ft. girth to the trunk and hollow inside up to about 30 ft! I Loved that tree and miss it still. But I just couldn’t live with the risks of keeping it. (One windy day a 30 ft. long branch sailed past my window and landed in the driveway…. no buildings were touched but it was a warning to me!) Time passes and we don’t always notice how much the big old trees actually keep growing… or begin to die. It is hard to accept. I feel your pain.
As for the haircut, enjoy the summer cut!

It’s very disheartening to me. Apparently this happened to several people in our area. And I’m right, the wind was coming from an unusual direction.

      Thanks. Stay safe.

I’m so sorry about your trees losing limbs. So sad. I grew up with a huge oak tree in the back 40. Part of the reason my Dad bought the acereage he bought. He grew up in Toledo and always wanted to live on a farm. The tree was easily over 100 years old. A good tree to give a hug too. And several of our English Setters were buried under it. I have a lilac bush planted in my flower bed of my condo that really needs to be trimmed as it’s grown so tall I can’t smell the flowers. And their scent isn’t that strong anyway sadly.

Ours has a strong scent, which I’m grateful for!

      Thanks Lucinda.

Great memories of your oak tree. Beautiful.

      Stay safe.

Yes, a photo of your new haircut is definitely needed! It’s a shame about the tree but sometimes it’s just nature’s way.
I’ve been to a Gardening Question Time’ this afternoon. The guy was hilarious! He kept mentioning Monty Don and pretending he was jealous of his success. Saying stuff like Monty started off as a jewellery designer whereas he’d trained in horticultural college and needed a qualification in Latin before he could be accepted as a student.I

He had some handy tips, one which I hadn’t thought of, when repotting plants into a larger container, take the plant out of its pot. Place the empty pot in the the larger one and put fresh soil/compost around the empty lot so it creates a mould. Remove it and place the plant into the moulded area. It will be a perfect fit!

    Happy Wednesday

I know exactly how you feel about your trees. It’s always a loss, even if it’s a branch or two. Glad to hear there was no damage to you or your cottage.

I sure hope you do post a quick pic of your new haircut. It’s always a bit of a risk to cut it, but it may be just the thing your hair needs.

Your lilacs are beautiful….I’m enjoying my neighbor’s. Cool here still, which is good…I ordered more mulch to finish the job. Enjoy your day! ;)

What a shock it must have been to see those tree branches on the ground. Fortunately, no one was hurt and there was no damage. Very sad, though. The picture of your lilacs is beautiful. Hugs, Elaine

      Thank you, Elaine.

Apparently, this happened on a lot of properties in our area. Something about the wind direction (which I suspected) and limbs with new leaves, whatever that means!

      Stay safe.

Ah, sorry about your tree. Its a thing here, trees dying in the drough. But our next door they have a gigantic tree i look at from the window of my room. I want to find an older tree to plant in the backyard again. We have the prettiest cedar trees in the front.
A nice haircut is a real boost. I usually cut my own hair. Right now it looks a bit like a mullet!
I need new meds very much. Next week. And im taking mike to my getaway place in the hills. Hope he likes like it like i like it. We will have the house sitter who has been helping me clean our house sometimes. Shes great and the dog likes her. Its a win win, but I wish I could keep it up myself.
The seller of that doll hasn’t contacted me yet, Claudia.
Yawn this is long. You seem like an old friend.

Always sad to see a tree suffer in the drought.

Have fun at your getaway with Mike.

          Thank you so much, Irene.

I am so sorry about your trees. They are like treasured friends. I have lost several large aspens the last two years. I have to have them cut down this summer$$$. Too large to do ourselves and to close to the house.
My hair has been driving me nuts. It seems only my bangs grow and they are constantly getting in my eyes. Your new hair cut sounds very summer like.
    Take Care,
    Kaye

We had that wind thing last week and it took down a big limb of the neighbor’s tree. And we had the “heat” thing on Monday. Weather is weird.

I think in 90 percent of the cases, shorter hair makes a woman look younger. It frames the face better. But maybe that’s just my opinion!

I like my long hair. I think I look better in long hair. But it needed to be cut.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
