Caroline Wants Equal Time

April 13, 2016 at 9:01 am by Claudia

Yesterday, as I was wandering around the downstairs, I thought I heard someone talking.

But Don wasn’t home and it wasn’t me, so how could that be?

Curious, I tried to find the source. As I moved nearer to the den, the voice grew louder.

I might have guessed. It was Caroline and she wasn’t happy. Once I got her to calm down and speak clearly, I understood. Apparently all these posts of mine about Roseville Pottery and my growing collection have ticked her off.

“Where are the photos of my  Roseville? And why do I only have four pieces?”

“Well, Caroline,” I said, “The answer to your second question is simply that it’s very, very hard to find miniature Roseville Pottery. There is only one source and I think I’ve found all I can find.”

She wasn’t happy.

I quickly interjected, “But I can take a few photos of your Roseville and some of your other pottery. I’ll post them tomorrow, okay?”

This seemed to do the trick. At least, for now.

4-13 miniroseville

There you go, Caroline. She does have some pretty pieces, doesn’t she? Like me, she prefers to display them, rather than actually use them to hold flowers. “They’re works of art,” she says. “They don’t need flowers.”

Left to right: Bleeding Heart vase, White Rose vase, Columbine vase and Fuchsia vase. (These are exact replicas of life-sized Roseville vases, by the way. I looked them up in my reference books.)

She urged me to take more pictures.

4-13 minivase

She loves this vase in the den. Barbara gave it to her.

4-13 minipottery

And she loves the pottery in her cabinet. Although I should urge her to straighten that cream colored vase on the right. It’s going to tip over.

Am I stating the obvious here when I say that Caroline seems to be modeling her collection after mine? Right down to the Singing Bird? They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I guess I should be flattered.

4-13 minipotteryinkitchen

I used to have a couple of these Fiesta pitchers. I regret selling them.

Hmmm. I wonder if I should collect them again?

Then it would be me copying Caroline who originally copied me. If you know what I mean.

I wrote a post about beloved children’s author Beverly Cleary’s 100th birthday, which was yesterday. I’d love you to come by and share some of your favorite Beverly Cleary books with us.

Happy Wednesday.

We go through McMinnville when we head to the Oregon coast. Still a wonderful little town. They have the Spruce Goose in an air museum there, but I have never been in to see it. One of these days. I loved the article on Beverly Cleary. Making to to 100 years old is quite an accomplishment!

Caroline’s house is so darling … tell her that her pottery collection is just beautiful and that she has many years to collect and enjoy. She’s really just getting started. Just wait, soon she will have boxes of pottery shoved under the beds and in the closets because she’s run out of display space. And she’ll look around and say to herself, or maybe her miniature boyfriend, “oh, I just love that (fill-in-the-blank) pottery, I’ve got to get more of that, isn’t it just the most beautiful thing you ever saw?” On a totally other note, I loved Ramona The Pest but truly loved every Beverly Cleary book I ever read. Thank you for noting her birthday, now I can go read some more about her!

I think I might grab a minute or two with Caroline’s boyfriend and let him know that she’d like more Roseville. It would take some of the pressure off me!

It’s funny, I read about your collecting and it seems to give you comfort (along with your husband, work, and coloring books). My family is in a time of stress right now over a possibly very serious health issue for my husband, and I am boxing up clutter left and right to get rid of. I have a strong desire to cull my belongings way down. I’m not touching my favorites though. I know that I would be sorry about that later on. Each person deals with stress differently, don’t we?

Oh, they do. But don’t get me wrong – I’m also getting rid of a lot of stuff. My collections are one thing. Clutter and things I really don’t need anymore are another!

Oh Caroline. Here she is with such a lovely home and she’s still not happy. (That sounds like me sometimes.). Always wanting more. Her collections are beautiful, as is her entire home. We also pass through McMinville several times a year. It would be impossible to choose a favorite book, I’ve enjoyed every one that I’ve read.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

Funny, I was thinking about Caroline the other day and here she is sharing her collection of pottery. She might have more then I do but I’m adding a few pieces soon so she will be behind once again. I do believe miniatures of quality are hard to find. But if she has copied you and I have copied you, who did you copy? or are you the original? I’m in a silly mood this morning and I love it!

I imagine that Caroline keeps quite busy. And, most especially after the magazine articles, as I am sure she was very much in demand with her crowd!! Her home is looking lovely as always, and the pottery is stunning!
Hope you get to go out and putz in the gardens today. It is so good for the soul!! Although, sometimes not quite as good for the back….. so take it easy. Remember it doesn’t have to all be done in one day. Maybe for an hour followed with a rest and then repeat? I know it is hard, but try not to over-do!

Can you hear me shouting all the way from Texas? If not, I am shouting “I love your house Caroline”. Just before I came over to visit you, I was looking at a retro house decorator’s youtube video and thought of you immediately, came over as fast as my Mac would take me here to find today’s post. We are on the same wavelength. I am sending a link of the doorbell installation in a Betsy McCall dollhouse. I hope this link works, if not, email me and I will send it to you that way. You must see this, although you are usually three steps ahead of me, so maybe you already have. Here it is my mini loving friend https://youtu.be/hhJ97BaZKYQ

Ah, such a cute and clever post today, Claudia! And you’d think by now I wouldn’t still swoon every time I see photos of your doll house…but, I do. Thanks for a great start to my day.

I’m sure I’ve said it before but, some years ago, I saw an incredible exhibition at the Gene Autry Museum (Griffith Park/L.A.) which featured Malibu pottery (Bauer pottery; others) and an extensive collection of Fiesta. YOU would have swooned, Claudia! Just the colors alone, of all of it, were mind-blowing…and if you weren’t in love with California pottery before, nobody left ambivalent.

I have a few pieces of Bauer, and of course, I had a whole mess of vintage Fiesta at one time. Those colors are so vivid and wonderful! I’d love to have seen the exhibition.

The first time I saw you post about Caroline’s house i actually thought it was YOUR house. it took me a few moments to figure out it was in miniature. But still so very lovely and definitely a place I could live in … if I shrunk myself down to size. :)

Every time you have pictures of Caroline’s house I spot something I missed before. Love the details you have so lovingly added to each room. Could you please provide the link for the miniature Roseville pottery? I have read every single one of Beverly Cleary’s books over and over again since childhood (and in adulthood, too!). I loved Fifteen, but my favorites will always be the ones about Ramona and her family. Yes! Definitely purchase a copy of Fifteen for your personal library!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
