Another gorgeous day today. The temperatures are moderate with no excess humidity. It’s really been a beautiful week. Very, very thankful.
I have a reproduction Barbie arriving today. She’s a Silkstone Barbie, made out of a hard plastic that mimics the look of porcelain. They also feel heavier. Anyway, the Silkstones were made for several years and then discontinued in 2020. As of 2024, they’re being made again.
I have one other Silkstone and it’s this one. She’s a reproduction of an early Barbie; she has the ponytail and those shoes we all remember. “Busy Gal” is her name. I love the face on the original Barbies, which was more angular and stylized. This face is based on the original 1958 mold. Of course, this is what my bubble haircut Barbie had and what I grew up with. I really like the Silkstones. They’re highly collectible.
I’ll share her with you on Monday. (I’m excited!) I ordered her just in time because she sold out right after that. Silkstones are always limited editions.
Speaking of dolls, I have two newish videos on my YouTube channel: “New Blythe Custom” which takes a longer look at my new Blythe, Miyoshi, and “Details and the Story behind the Gene Marshall dolls.” They’re not long and you just might enjoy them! Here’s the link. I’ll attempt to film the unboxing of the new Barbie later today. I purchased a little stand for my phone camera and I’m crossing my fingers that it works.
And speaking of dolls, Pru was found climbing on the vintage folk art dollhouse yesterday. That girl doesn’t have an ounce of fear, unlike her mother who is afraid of heights.
We’ve been having quiet and calm days here at the cottage. Then, at night, we’re watching the Mets play, hoping they get a wildcard slot. Lots of cheering and screaming and exhaustion.

i, too, have a fear of heights. to try to conquer it, i took a class and did some rock-climbing, also made four solo skydives. nope … still afraid of heights (but proud i face/d it).
i enjoy baseball, but haven’t watched any in a very long time and don’t have a favorite team so will cheer for yours. go mets!
will keep sorting and moving everything else i can in the next nine days. movers come on september 08. hope it’s a cool, dry day then too.

it’s hard right now just with all that’s needed to blend three households into one (my sister’s and mine with our parents’). no different than what many of you and other people have done or do. there’s a lot to do to move any time and especially while grieving, when all i want to do is take longer walks or sit and be.
thankfully, there are “lights at the end of the tunnel”. the move will happen in nine days and if everything isn’t sorted or sold before then, well, we know what i’ll be doing for a while, and winter will be a good time for that. my brother, sister and i are getting through all these things together, honoring our beloved and much-missed parents. and God is here (everywhere), the biggest light of all.
i’m okay with leaving the apartment because where i’m at now is infinitely better than that apartment (even though it is a cute place and just a short block from our wonderful art center) … a beautiful gift from our parents. there are people in that building who’ve become good friends and we’re keeping in touch, but i will easily choose living with my sister than by them.

Oh, Barbie! What memories she brings back! This summer I bought two Ginny dolls from 1957.
One came with an entire red doll trunk full of clothes. I will admit that I washed and ironed their clothes. And they already have their Christmas dresses……

I never had a Barbie doll growing up but I did have a Shirley Temple doll, which I still have. Too bad very much younger me cut her hair and cut off her finger tips (she needed a manicure?). But I still love her, despite also using blue marker to give her eye shadow… The best part, though, was the hours my Mom put into sewing her a wardrobe. I still have all the clothes, and the sweaters I knit for her, in my little girl’s train case. Shirley sits patiently on a shelf in my sewing room, reminding me over the decades that she needs more clothes.
I wish I still had all the clothes my grandmother made for my dolls – a Tiny Tears and Barbie, of course.
Time to make more clothes for Shirley, Wendy!

I think I’m about the same vintage as you (Oct 52). I had two Barbies–a red-headed bubble cut and a blonde pony tail. They both came in black and white strapless swimsuits and high heels. My friends and I had just about decided we were too old to play with dolls anymore, but Barbies had all those neat clothes! We played with dolls for a couple more years. . .
Yes, all of the first group of Barbies had black and white swimsuits.

Pru is really sweet. I’m glad the weather this week was so good for you! We’ve had a pretty nice summer here. This afternoon Amrit and I went kayaking on a little park lake. Mike did all the grunt work of getting the boats on the SUV. I have to help balance my long kayak. Amrit has never kayaked before and had such a great time.
Tonight I should have been making apple sauce, but cooked up some corn instead. I’m going to bed, it was a long enough day. Stay safe, everyone
