Thinking About Things on a Saturday

October 5, 2013 at 10:04 am by Claudia

maple1

• The sugar maple. You can see where the damage occurred. There was a huge limb that grew out of that section of the tree and arched over the garden. When it came down it fell right on the garden. There are large sections of the garden where I can see no trace of my plants. Plants, for the most part, that have been growing there for seven years.

It’s not easy to see our sugar maple this way. If you remember, we lost another big limb during Hurricane Irene. This is also why we now need to get it and a few other trees pruned, so that there is no unnecessary weight pulling on the tree.

maple2

Quite a gash, no? The arborist tells us it will heal. But I can feel the tree’s pain as this limb was ripped off. Oh yes, I believe trees and plants feel things. Just how and what, I don’t claim to know. But they feel. Now that Scout’s crisis is under control, I’m going to have spend some time with this tree. More than a few hugs and positive healing words are in order.

• Leaves are falling everywhere here at the cottage. Maybe because I’ve been away and missed the first signs of color change, it seems to be happening so fast. We’re avoiding any raking at the moment. Eventually, we’ll have to get out there and clean things up, but now? We’re tired.

• You all know I’m a big Red Sox fan. My sister, who lives in Florida, is a Tampa Bay Rays fan. Uh oh. Those two teams are currently battling it out in the ALDS. The Sox won last night, but the Rays are a good team and I know it will be a battle. Meredith, I like your Rays and their manager, Joe Madden. But I’m hoping the Red Sox win. All’s fair in love and war.

gomphrena

• I took this picture of the Gomphrena growing in my galvanized planter. It looks like I used some sort of photo effect, but I didn’t. It just came out this way. I like it.

• Scoutie is improving daily. Yesterday I told Don that I would know she was getting back to normal when she demanded something or other from me by barking. A few short hours later, she wanted more food (she didn’t have anything to eat for about 4 days when she first become ill and she’s doing her best to catch up) and sure enough, after a stare-down contest, she started barking. Careful what you wish for, Claudia. She’s still tired but her energy level in general is a lot higher. I’m so grateful. This girl has been through a lot in the past 15 months: The scare with Geriatric Vestibular Disease, when she couldn’t walk or keep her balance and her eyes darted back and forth and I thought she’d had a stroke; Lyme Disease, which resulted in hospitalization and lots of worry and finally coming home on my birthday and this latest, the tumor in her vulva.

All of the dogs we have been lucky enough to have in our family were rescued and each of them dealt with chronic problems, diseases and, in the case of two of them, attacks from other dogs. I was thinking about that the other night. I’ll have to list everything someday. It’s mind boggling.

• And finally, I didn’t get around to picking the winner of a copy of Lowcountry Bombshell until this morning. The winner is longtime reader, Claudia Ehlers. Congratulations, Claudia! (You have a beautiful name, by the way!)

Happy Saturday.

A Break in the Weather, Photo-Bombing & My Talented Husband

July 21, 2013 at 8:34 am by Claudia

Ssssh! What? Oh, pardon me. I’m just enjoying the quiet. For the first time in a month, the air conditioner isn’t on. For the first time in a month, I can open the windows. The humidity, that awful, awful humidity has broken.

Hallelujah!

I never thought that hearing the sound of the refrigerator could be so wonderful. Or the sound of a car going by. Heaven. The minute I got up this morning, I turned off the downstairs A/C, opened all the windows and smiled. Maybe, just maybe I can actually spend some time on the porch today.

I’m continually trying to grab a picture of all the birds that frequent the birdbath. It’s been especially active around there lately because of the heat and humidity. The robins, the catbirds, the finches, and an occasional mourning dove, have been drinking and bathing and frolicking. I have to shoot the photos through the glass on the kitchen door because any opening of the door will scare them off. Nine times out of ten, by the time I grab my older camera with its zoom lens, they’re gone.

I have to move quickly so I just point and shoot. And hope.

Finally, I was able to get some photos yesterday.

birdiesandchip

Four birds sharing the communal bath. Perhaps they were having a meeting?

Imagine my delight when I examined the photo a bit more closely. Move your eyes just a bit north of the birds.

It’s a chipmunk! He’s peeking out from behind a rock in the garden.

I have to say, this was a fun surprise.

birdesatibirdbath

One bird has left, three remain. And Chippie, still watching.

I adore chipmunks.

chippie

The blur in the upper left hand corner is a retreating bird. One bird remains, along with our ever vigilant Chippie.

Birds and chipmunks. Sigh of happiness.

The opening for Pygmalion was a few days ago. Don is working at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, one of the most respected summer theaters in the country. It’s a rather big operation and very busy. There are always a lot of well-known, even famous, actors working there. It’s in a beautiful college town and while at least two plays are always running, there are even more plays in rehearsal, ready for the next round of performances.

Anyway. Dare I brag a bit? Don tends to not read reviews. Nor do I. But, he casually mentioned he had heard through the grapevine that the reviews of his performance had been great. And then he changed the topic of conversation. Because he’s pretty modest. But I’m not at all modest about his talent.

The internet can be pretty handy at a time like this. If you don’t mind, I’ll just share some quotes with you. By the way, Don sometimes chooses to be billed as Don Lee Sparks. Sometimes, Don Sparks. This time it’s Don Lee Sparks. (I’ve given up trying to figure it out.)

From the ArtsFuse, Boston’s Online Arts Magazine, written by Helen Epstein:

“Don Lee Sparks, however, steals the show as Eliza’s absentee father Mr. Doolittle. When he’s dressed for his wedding in lavender gloves, vest and spats, he serves as the perfect mouthpiece for Shaw’s views on class, marriage, morality – almost everything.”

From Broadway World, written by Larry Murray:

“Equally delightful are the two extended appearances of Eliza Doolittle’s father played by a perfect Don Lee Sparks…When Sparks is on stage everyone else just about fades to near -invisibility. He not only fills his role, he overflows it, as Shaw has him dominate the proceedings and his delicious acting easily earns the biggest laughs of the evening.”

From the Times-Union, written by Steve Barnes:

“Don Lee Sparks almost steals the show as Eliza’s father, Alfred, a dustman who, thanks to Higgins, gets a lecture tour, money and misery that he didn’t have when he was poor.”

I read much the same when he was doing the role in San Diego. Don thinks this production is even better than the one in San Diego. I can’t wait to see it next Saturday on closing night.

My husband is an extremely talented actor. He’s a gifted comedic actor, as well, with pitch-perfect timing. I’m proud of him.

Sort of bustin’ my buttons here at the cottage.

Happy Sunday.

Maggie, Frick & Frack and Endless Rain

July 2, 2013 at 8:14 am by Claudia

wistfulmaggie

Maggie seemed wistful yesterday.

She stayed by the window for the longest time.

She didn’t want to talk, she just wanted to look out the window.

I finally realized she was looking at something. I peered out.

wistfulmaggie2

Ah. That explains it.

She wants to go outside and play. Who can blame her?

Maggie has a new friend.

mygroundhogs

Casey, this is for you. I used my old camera (which has a telephoto lens) to capture these two. Mr. and Mrs. Groundhog.

Usually, I only see one. But as I was focusing, another one popped out from behind the climbing hydrangea. They run there when they hear a noise or are alarmed.

I’m going to call them Frick and Frack.

It has rained so much here and it’s so humid that the windows are permanently steamed up. I feel like I’m living in some sort of tropical greenhouse. The other day it rained over 5 inches in two hours. There are flood warnings. The ground is saturated.

I’m sick of it, frankly. And it’s going to continue through Friday. My hydrangeas have drooped down to the ground. Will they ever stand upright again? My poor babies, they just bloomed. Please, Mother Nature, give us a break.

All of this is especially sad when I see what is going on out West and how desperately water is needed there. I wish I could wave a magic wand and send this rain where it is most lacking. Such extremes everywhere! I can’t even begin to take in the tragic deaths of 19 heroic firefighters. Once again, we are faced with a loss that is incomprehensible.

daylily1

At some point in the last several days, it was dry enough for me to take a picture or two of the garden. Another daylily is blooming.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
