The Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Part 1

December 3, 2016 at 11:01 am by Claudia

Well. I just spent an hour editing photos from our tour of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. There are a lot of them, so I think I’ll do this in a couple of posts.

I cannot tell you how meaningful and inspiring yesterday was for me. I’m still thinking about it. So is Don. Believe me, I’m going vegan. It make take a while, but that’s where I’m headed. If you had been with us and heard the stories about factory farming and the routine abuse of animals in the dairy and meat industries – I think you would be considering it, too. My aim in these posts is not to lecture. You know I don’t eat animals and haven’t for many, many years. But the dairy industry and what happens there on a daily basis is new information for me. Yes, I’d heard stories, but yesterday opened my eyes in way they hadn’t been before. I’ll leave you this link to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary to learn more.

We arrived early so we walked around the parking area, which is surrounded by birds and sheep and goats and pigs. Heaven.

As we waited for our tour guide, Lesley, we wandered around taking pictures. We were immediately greeted by Delores the goat. Delores turned out to be funny, quirky, mischievous, and non-stop curious. (Don’t tell anyone, but she was my favorite.) She came up to me, let me pet her, gave me a little head butt and we were friends.

There she is, peeking out from under the truck.

12-3-deloresonthemove

On the move.

12-3-deloresandchicken

There she is again. That girl gets around.

12-3-deloresinjeep1

She climbed into this jeep and had a great time exploring and, yes, chewing.

12-3-deloresinjeep2

She found something she wanted to play with and was having a great time.

I turned away for a short time to watch and pet Sister Mary Frances, a pig.

12-3-sistermaryfrances

Sister Mary Frances is a hoot. She wandered close to the road, so a staff member slowly herded her back down and Mary Frances was vocally complaining all the way. Apparently, she’s very dramatic. We got to pet her and she’s a darling.

Then I turned back and saw this:

12-3-deloresintruck

Delores had jumped in a truck that was delivering feed. This particular feed was not what she was hoping for.

12-3-deloresintruck2

Our tour guide was Lesley and she was wonderful. Along the way, she shared stories of some of the rescues. She also shared information about the way animals are treated on factory farms. Some of that I will share with you. Some of it I won’t.

12-3-chicken

There were chickens and roosters everywhere.

12-3-gorgeouschickenbytree

12-3-closeupchicken

I got to stroke the feathers of this beauty.

12-3-mellowgoat

This guy was very mellow. He was in this position when we arrived and when we left.

12-3-sheep

Beautiful.

12-3-goatandoreothecat

That’s Oreo, the cat. There are a few other cats around, though the Sanctuary doesn’t rescue dogs and cats. It rescues farm animals. But sometimes a cat comes along with a rescue of farm animals.

12-3-nubiangoats

Nubian goats – they were very gentle and loved being petted. Delores on the right.

12-3-goatscomingback

All of the goats being herded back after straying onto the hill in the background. Right after this photo was taken, they started running and we were too entranced and delighted to take a picture!

I have lots more.

It’s important to know that rescues come out of all sorts of situations; factory farming, animal hoarding, abuse, abandonment, and the imminent danger of being slaughtered. The Sanctuary is huge. We only saw a small part of it. Pliers and Ashley are currently off-site, being taken care of until they get acclimated and are ready to be moved onto the site. We hope to see them soon.

Becoming members of The Catskill Animal Sanctuary might just be the best thing we’ve done in a long time.

More tomorrow.

Happy Saturday.

Fog, Dogs & Gratitude

November 30, 2016 at 9:03 am by Claudia

11-30-foggymorning

Another foggy morning here in my neck of the woods.

I love foggy mornings. There’s something mysterious about them. Something other-worldly. And then I hear Fred Astaire singing “A foggy day in London town…”

It’s very cozy around here this morning. We’re watching the fog shift and change, drinking our coffee and feeling grateful. Sometimes I have to remind myself to stop and utter thanks for what I have. It’s tempting to compare my life with others, and though I am much better about that than I used to be, comparison still creeps in there from time to time.

The sheer and utter truth is that I am blessed: a husband who loves me and who I love in return, a cozy little cottage that provides a roof over our heads, bills that are paid for the month, heat coming from the oil burner, food in the pantry, a family I adore and a sister who is simply the best sister ever, a little nephew who sounded so cheery and so happy last night that gratitude for his recovery from the seizure that happened just a week ago filled me up from head to toe,  friends and colleagues who challenge and support me, work in my chosen field – I’ll stop there, but goodness, there’s so much more.

11-30-eveningskywithbirds

I took this picture the other day and today, as I was editing it, I realized there are birds flying by that big, fluffy cloud. I love surprises like that.

I don’t think I’ve ever shared the next picture with you. I took it before I started blogging – somewhere between 2006 and 2008. It was for the cover of Don’s first CD (no longer available) called “Dogs in the House.”

11-30-dogsinthehouse

Don keeps it in a frame on his desk.

We had to do some maneuvering to get this photo. We opened the window and took out the screen and then Don had to hold out some treats to get the dogs to come to the edge of the opening. Over and over again until we got this shot.

Of course, we rewarded their patience with our shenanigans with lots of treats.

Oh, those sweet faces. How I miss them.

Another rainy day ahead for us and then a bit of a warm-up tomorrow and Friday. On Friday, we’re going to go on a tour of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary! I’m so excited. I’ll take lots of pictures, I promise.

Happy Wednesday.

On The Farm

November 17, 2016 at 9:25 am by Claudia

Has anyone else found their sleep to be somewhat erratic lately? I’m betting that’s the case. This morning I woke up at 4 am and never went back to sleep. And for some reason, I keep thinking it’s Saturday.

As I was sipping my much needed coffee this morning, I saw a gnat flying by my mug and the next thing I knew, there he was floating on the surface. I rescued him with my finger tip and placed him on a piece of paper, but I thought he was a goner. Then I dumped my coffee and brewed a fresh cup. To my amazement, the gnat survived and walked off the paper and is presumably somewhere around here. I’ve also rescued two flies in the last two days, which is an ongoing thing around here. They don’t live long and I don’t like to see them spend that time trapped in the house vainly trying to get outside where they belong. So this year, I turned over a new leaf and stopped ignoring them. Now, I rescue them and deposit them back outside.

Speaking of all creatures great and small:

11-17-horses

We visited our friends at the boarding farm yesterday. Very, very affectionate boy.

11-17-horses2

This little girl is so sweet. She eats out of my hand.

11-17-horses3

As soon as I walked in the direction of this corral, these three guys trotted on over.

11-17-horses4

He cracked me up. Reminds me of Mr. Ed. He is also a sweetie pie.

11-17-horses5

11-17-horses7

These guys are all rescues. Isn’t that wonderful? The were impatiently waiting to be led into their stalls, which means dinner time.

The two horses in the first two photos belong to a local woman who boards them at the farm.

11-17-horses6

We gave them treats and chatted with the owners who love telling us about each horse; the personalities, the hierarchy, the rescue stories.

We are trying to contact the rescue group who took in our two elderly horse friends. They’re doing well, we know that much, and their previous owner has traveled up to see them. If they allow us to, we’d like to make an appointment to visit them.

I just finished a wonderful mystery by a new author, Emily Littlejohn. It’s called Inherit the Bones. I’ll review it next week on the other blog. It’s the first in a series, which is exciting.

We’re watching episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show on Netflix. It makes us happy, and we can use a big dash of happy right now. I forgot what a brilliant physical comedian Van Dyke was/is. There have been a few episodes where we have laughed so hard we had tears rolling down our faces. Brilliant work. Ann Morgan Guilbert, who played next-door neighbor Millie, died recently. I had the good fortune of working with her on a show when I was living in California. She was a talented, lovely, and very funny woman.

Some thoughts on Susan Branch and her post yesterday. I’m a person who tends to respond emotionally to a situation. My heart is on my sleeve, more often than not. That’s good and it’s also bad, depending on the situation because there are times I regret responding immediately. I wish I could be a little more, not detached, but analytical? Is that the word? What Susan wrote was so well thought out, so logical and so heartfelt that it really made me think. She comes at it from another angle and it makes so much sense! I’m going to read the whole thing again today.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
