Fall Colors

October 28, 2023 at 8:15 am by Claudia

A shortish post today.

Don took this photo from our bedroom window this morning:

Gosh darn it, this burning bush is amazing at this time of year.

Me taking a picture of Don taking a picture.

This will be our last unseasonably warm day and tomorrow will bring a 30 degree plunge into much colder temperatures. I actually had the a/c on for a bit yesterday afternoon,

I’ve been feeling a wee bit under the weather so I’m low energy this morning. Plus, I haven’t had my second cup of coffee.

October is the time for groundhogs to start hibernating.

Our guy who lives under the shed hasn’t read the memo. I’ve saw him chomping on the grass yesterday.

Well, he does have a few days before the end of the month.

I wonder where all the kids have ended up? I kind of miss those little rascals.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Autumn Beauty

October 23, 2023 at 9:50 am by Claudia

Moody skies, zinnias, and fall color. There was quite a bit of wind over the weekend, so there are huge catalpa leaves on the ground all over the property. Time for Don to rake again.

Speaking of Don, I woke up in the middle of the night coughing. When this kind of thing happens in the middle of a deep sleep, it usually takes me a while to realize that I need to get up and clear my throat and suck on a cough drop. Usually, Don sleeps through it, but this time it woke him up and he couldn’t get back to sleep and now he’s very sleep deprived. I feel terrible! Usually, it’s a snore that keeps me awake. Anyway, he always, always has a better attitude about it than I do. I apologized to him this morning, and he said “It’s find. The coughing woke me up, but my brain kept me awake.”

Anyway, I’m going to do my best to help him through the day. Mainly by being quiet, so he can grab a nap or two.

I finished The Running Grave  by Robert Galbraith – all 945 pages of it. I think it’s the best yet in this series. I quite literally couldn’t put it down. So many twists and turns and beautifully detailed characterizations. It’s still in my brain this morning. Rowling is such a gifted writer – to produce a book that is, let’s face it, very long, but so well written that one reads page after page after page without stopping because it flows so beautifully. She is brilliant.

If you are not familiar with this series, it’s written by JK Rowling but the author name she originally published under was Robert Galbraith. If I remember correctly, she chose the name so as not to be linked with the Harry Potter series, but the news that she was the actual author leaked pretty early on. You should definitely read the books in order because the recurring characters undergo a lot of changes and knowing and understanding their journeys is pivotal. This is #7 in the series.

And now, I’ve just begun reading Richard Osman’s The Last Devil to Die, the newest book in the Thursday Night Murder series.

What would I do without reading? It’s been the one constant in my life and has, quite literally, saved me.

Two weeks from yesterday I am going to attend Wonderland of Play/BlytheCon in New Jersey. It will be held in Jersey City,  about a two hour drive from my house. Before Covid hit, there were various BlytheCon celebrations yearly; BlytheMadrid, BlytheConUK, Play and Party Prague, etc. These events bring together Blythe artisans and Blythe lovers and I’ve witnessed how amazing they are in my IG Blythe feed. This may be the only time I get to go to one, so I grabbed a ticket back in February and on November 5th, I’ll be meeting a lot of friends and artists in person. (I’ll be wearing a mask, but I’ll take it off for photos.) Lots of people I know are going, favorite vendors will be there, and it will be wonderful to be with fellow Blythe lovers who understand the hold this doll can have on a person.

I’m starting to get excited.

Okay. I need to zap my now cold coffee in the microwave.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday,

Autumn and School

October 2, 2023 at 8:15 am by Claudia

Autumn leaf color is slowly revealing itself – mostly browns and golds at this point but many trees haven’t yet begun to change. We’re in for a warmer stretch the next few days. It was warm yesterday. It’s time to mow the front lawn and the back forty/corral. I wonder when nature will show us that no more mowing is needed? Seems impossible at the moment.

It’s been nice to see the sun again. Sunday was sunny all day long and that has been a rarity lately. Today, tomorrow, Wednesday – I think all three days are expected to be sunny.

This time of year always reminds me of school starting, of shuffling through crisp leaves as I walked to school. Our house was in a suburb of Detroit – right next to Detroit, actually. The elementary school was across the street. Our junior high at the end of our street – a 3½ block walk. The high school was a longer walk: down the street to the corner, turn left and walk by a large field and then several more blocks, then turn left and walk through a much busier section of our neighborhood to arrive at the school. A half-mile? A mile? I’m not sure. But I never once used a school bus. Schools in our area were easily reached and walking was good for you. I don’t think any school buses operated in our neighborhood. Before the big field in front of our house (owned by Ford Motor Co.) was sold and subdivided for houses, I used to cut across the field on my journey to high school, unless it was muddy. It saved time.

My mom never learned to drive. We had one car and my father used it for work. So my parents were smart in choosing where to buy a house. All of us trekked to whatever school we were attending. I used to take an extra class in high school which started at 7:30 am, so I often walked to school in the dark. I never felt unsafe.

It was a different time.

I used to get terrible menstrual cramps. They were so horrible, I’d often feel like I was going to pass out. We tried everything for them, but the only thing that helped at all was a heating pad and aspirin/ibuprofen. Every time the cramps started, I’d do my best to get through the day until I faced the fact that it was impossible. I’d ask to be excused from class to go to the nurse’s office. The nurse would call my mom and since mom didn’t drive, I’d have to walk all the way home from the high school. Mom would stand at the front window, keeping watch for a glimpse of me starting to trudge across the field. Then she’d track me all the way, open the door, and hustle me off to bed.

Heating pads are a theme in my life. In those younger, much more limber days, I used them once a month for cramps. Now? I use one almost daily for my back.

So many hours spent praying that a heavy menstrual flow wouldn’t leak, hoping I could get to a bathroom in time to check on everything. It’s really god-awful, isn’t it? That memory is a bit softened nowadays, but if I allow myself to think about it, as I’m doing now, all of it comes back. Praying that no telltale stains appeared. Oh heavens! I feel like it took up so much of my life.

Autumn is so evocative. I bet all of us have a host of sense memories from this time of year. What are some of yours?

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
