Day Four Hundred Five

April 22, 2021 at 9:40 am by Claudia

Another flowering tree in the Secret Garden. This was taken early in the day yesterday before the insane weather arrived. Windy, very cold, thunderstorms. Don says the wind chill was 18 degrees when he got up this morning. We’re having snow showers at the moment and tonight might bring frost.

Enough already.

Right before we went to bed, we ran outside to bring five containers of pansies in the house. The wind was so intense and it was so cold that I figured I’d rest easier knowing they were safe.

Our little Carolina wrens hadn’t been around for several days. We figured they might have opted for a different nest. But yesterday morning, I heard them calling and I saw BOTH of them! They were flying around the little trailer and at one point, they both went inside.

Were they moving in? Or were they still in the process of choosing their new home? We’re not sure, but at least one of them was back this morning, singing while standing in front of the house. He/she went inside, as well.

Heavens, I’ll be glad when I can finally get outside to finish clearing garden beds and can go to the nursery to buy plants for my pots. Next week will be much warmer, so I must be patient. I’m working on the puzzle in the meantime.

Wish us luck tonight with the freezing temps!

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

Day Three Hundred Ninety-Four

April 11, 2021 at 10:05 am by Claudia

So far this morning: Four deer were munching on the grass right outside the kitchen window, the wren has been singing and working diligently on the nest since at least 6 am, two robins were fighting, four cardinals – two male, two female – were in the big garden bed, Canada geese flew overhead, I saw (and heard) two mourning doves, and we had our first groundhog sighting.

I knew we had one living under the shed, as all the entrances and exits were free of leaves. He’d been doing some spring cleaning. Don’t know whether this is the same one that was living here last year or a new guy/girl, so we have no name yet. Last year’s was named Shifty, if you remember. We’ll watch and observe.

A little darker this morning as we’re going to have rain the rest of the day and tomorrow. It hasn’t started yet. He’s still nest-building – I just saw him through the den window.

The little tree next to the catalpa is in bud. I just noticed that this morning.

Better than any television show or movie, this is. My heart is full. I told Don that I realize that I was unconsciously ‘holding’ myself during the winter months and that I feel more open now. He said, sure, you were contracted and now you’re expansive. Exactly. No more unconscious contracting, now I’m consciously expanding. I love living here. It’s like we’re living on our own little nature preserve. The maples are starting to get small buds, as are the other trees. The last to leaf out will be the catalpa.

Grateful on this Sunday morning.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Day Three Hundred Ninety-Three

April 10, 2021 at 10:02 am by Claudia

More wren love:

Very, very busy.

He/she seems to stop around 10 am.

I saw more nest making activity early this morning, around 7 am, but that seems to have stopped. Maybe the nest is finished?

While I had the camera out, I grabbed a photo of this guy.

Robins must look like giants to a wee little wren!

I did my first clean-out of the big garden bed, as well as the bed right next to the porch. I’ll have to do more work, but the first ‘sweep’ is done. We’re heading into much cooler weather tomorrow. Today, we’ll reach 72 and then it rains tomorrow and the high only reaches 50 degrees on Monday! It’s been lovely, but in truth, it’s been a little too warm for this time of year.

Today, I am actually going to take it easy. I vowed to take every other day off this past week but I ended up doing some work outside nearly every day. I have a zoom meeting at noon with an actor friend of mine who has moved back to India. I’m going to help him with a Southern dialect for a reading he’s doing.

And then, some laundry, vacuuming, and my puzzle. This one is a  New Yorker puzzle using Seurat’s famous “A Sunday Afternoon….” painting as its inspiration, so that means the entire cover is done in pointillism…dots. Difficult!

Something tells me I might keep doing puzzles, even through the spring. We’ll see.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
