Mating Season

July 11, 2018 at 9:55 am by Claudia

Early in the evening yesterday, Don was making dinner and I was sitting in the den. I can see the edge of the birdbath from my chair and I noticed two doves sitting on the edge.

They were grooming each other. This went on for quite a while, each dove taking a turn. Very affectionate. Very sweet. I called out to Don and he walked over to the door to watch them from the kitchen.

Eventually, they moved apart.

And started to head toward the opposite end of the birdbath. This is the pair that I’ve seen around here for several years.

One jumped down to the ground. The other followed.

I mentioned to Don that they were resting on the parking area and I moved back into the den and stopped taking pictures.

A few minutes went by.

Then I heard, “Honey, I think they just mated.”

Apparently, Don walked back to the window to watch them and saw the male get on top of the female.

I missed it.

No photos, but then again, that’s rather a private thing, don’t you think?

We googled the whole mating thing and, sure enough, that’s what they do. He gets on top of her, she moves her tail and they mate. Now that I look at the photo above, it looks like she was in position, waiting for her guy.

By the time I reached the door, it was over. They stayed together on the ground and then walked toward the shed, eating along the way. Eventually, they flew up into the catalpa tree.

Wow.

Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it,
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love. – Cole Porter

The coneflowers are opening. My favorite cottage garden flower.

And check out these beauties! The coneflower and the day lilies are in The Far Side garden bed.

We’ve moved into normalcy again. It only takes a few days to get through the re-entry process. But I’m still not sleeping enough and I’m pretty exhausted. I was having this trouble before Don came home, but adjusting to sleeping together again is not helping things.

My kingdom for some sleep!

It’s a lovely day today. Yesterday was too hot, but today is shaping up to be a perfect summer day.

Happy Wednesday.

A Goldfinch

June 19, 2018 at 9:06 am by Claudia

We had a few thunderstorms late yesterday. When I came out on the porch this morning, it was still quite humid, but it seems to be decreasing, thank goodness. There are white catalpa blossoms all over the grass.

Little Nigel is eating some of my Big Garden Bed plants. Ummm….No. I’m going to put some white wire fences around the bed later today, like the ones I have protecting the Memorial Garden, etc. He’s already chomped on a volunteer coneflower.

Tsk. Tsk.

I’m not going into the city today because I have things to take care of here and Don has an especially busy week ahead, with rehearsals on two afternoons for their performance on A Capitol Fourth on PBS. As I’m going in on Saturday to be there to celebrate Don’s birthday on Sunday, I’m fine with not going in today, as is Don.

I spent some time yesterday shooting these pictures from inside the kitchen. This male goldfinch hung around the memorial garden for quite a long time.

The female was around, as well, but she never got within range of my telephoto lens.

So beautiful. And tiny!

Happy Tuesday.

Loveliness (and Madness)

April 14, 2018 at 8:49 am by Claudia

A favorite view.

Another tense evening, with you-know-who desperately trying to distract us from his very real problems at home. Question: if he cares so much about the people of Syria (and he should) why did he do everything he could to close our borders to Syrian refugees? And what about the horrors going on in Yemen?

You don’t have to answer. They are rhetorical questions. We know the answer.

Anyway, this happened late in the evening so yours truly had to run a bubble bath in an attempt to relax my rigid muscles. Sigh.

I did more work outside yesterday, slowly uncovering the big garden bed and completely uncovering the garden bed right next to the porch. I’ll do more today and then we’ll be in the middle of two days of rain starting on Sunday. It will be heavy rain at times, which makes me think it is the midwest storm moving east. Those of you getting snow: I’m so sorry. It will melt quickly, but it really is the final straw, isn’t it?

It was very warm yesterday and that warmth is going to continue in NYC today, but not here. We’re back down to the fifties. It’s so wonderful to hear lots of birdsong in the morning. This morning, when I got up and walked to the upstairs bathroom, I could hear a symphony of singing birdies. Last night, when I went to bed, I could hear a symphony of peepers, with a bass accompaniment by the bullfrog.

That makes me smile.

I got called for jury duty! But as it was going to be the week of April 23rd, I postponed it. That’s smack in the middle of trying to get the garden up and running and I can’t spare the time – what if it became a long trial? I’ve postponed it until the end of June. and I will perform my civic duty then.

It’s sunny today. Slowly, ever so slowly, I feel the shackles of a long winter easing their grip. I hope you’re all having a lovely weekend.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
