Potpourri on Monday

May 1, 2017 at 10:05 am by Claudia

• Gray day yesterday. So far: equally gray day today. Friday’s warm temps dropped twenty degrees by yesterday. This year’s erratic spring weather is consistent in its inconsistency.

• First up: I’ve decided to let the cedar Adirondack chairs weather naturally and not  paint them. After reading up on the care of cedar – staining and adding a protective coat every year, or painting and having to repaint every year – those options looked less and less attractive to yours truly. For goodness sake, our kitchen is in desperate need of a paint job and I still haven’t got around to it! Painting and me = oil and water. My only hope for painting the kitchen is to enlist my husband, who, as you well know, is currently far away.

I did buy some cushions yesterday and am going to look for more today. Also on the shopping list: mulch and more mulch, top soil, and potting soil.

And plants to put in the pots.

• The daffs/narcissus in the woods. I have the same kind of narcissus in my garden, and it’s just about ready to bloom. Interestingly, the yellow daffodils on the edge of the woods didn’t bloom this year. They are usually the first to bloom and they came up earlier than usual because of the abnormally warm temps, so I’m wondering if the extreme temperature fluctuations we had this spring were the culprit. I think they were.

So delicately beautiful.

• The catalpa, always the last of the trees to leaf out, is just beginning to show some baby leaves. I love this tree, home to giant heart-shaped leaves and flowers in June, as well as to our resident honeybees.

• Vicki was noting the other day in a comment the disappointment she feels when a favorite blog suddenly fades away; more and more time between posts, less and less substance, less of the author’s voice, etc. I have felt the same disappointment when a blogger either stops blogging or lets months go by between posts. Some of those bloggers have taken to Instagram because, I presume, it’s quicker and easier to post a photo and a short caption. Of course, the conversation that a blog affords between a blogger and the readers can still exist on Instagram, but, let’s face it, it’s shorter, less revealing, and requires less commitment.

I like Instagram and I post there. But for me, it could never take the place of sharing my thoughts and ideas and the story of our life here at the cottage. There’s depth and then there’s a sound bite. But, I equally understand the demands of daily life, especially if one is younger and raising a family. Finding the time to blog can be very hard, indeed. And, I also understand those bloggers that have been blogging for a number of years running out of steam. Boy, do I understand that! It can be daunting and frustrating and it takes a lot  of time. Fortunately for me, I still enjoy it and I remain committed. Someday that might change. But for now, I’m good.

Instagram affords a lot of people the space to share their lives in a more manageable, less time consuming way.

The same holds true for readers as well. I have longtime readers and newer readers and, along the way, some readers who have been fairly consistent commenters will just disappear. Some time will pass and I will suddenly think, “Where is so-and-so?” Just as you might worry about a blogger if they suddenly stop blogging, I worry about a reader who stops commenting (though there is certainly no commenting requirement around here!)

Sometimes I write to the commenter to ask if everything is okay. Mostly, I try not to take it personally and wish them well. Maybe they’re tired of the blog, or of me, or maybe I’ve said something that didn’t sit right. I have no way of knowing; all I can be is myself.

Just as I’ve had readers disappear, I’ve certainly moved on from some blogs that I used to read all the time and I am guilty of not commenting as often as I used to. I guess it’s the way of the world, or at least my world, at present.

Anyway, all this is to say that I understand. We develop a relationship with blogs over the years. We come to know the bloggers and care about them. I come to know you and care about you. But, just as life itself involves friendships/relationships that remain consistent through the years or eventually fade away as our needs evolve and change, the same holds true for bloggers and readers.

But it does make one sigh, doesn’t it?

When you find a lilac shaped like a heart, you have to take a picture of it.

Happy Monday.

View from the kitchen into the living room.

Boy, is it cold here! I hope my newly emerging daylilies can hang in there. It’s going down to the single digits tonight. What the ??? The weather has been so wildly inconsistent lately. 70 degrees one day, winds and freezing temps the next, and now this. Within another day or so the temps will be back up in the fifties during the day.

We even had a little snow squall yesterday.

I have to journey into Manhattan again today for a run through of Anastasia. There will be at least one more run through next week and then on Thursday, the whole production moves into the theater. As they start tech rehearsals, I’ll stay away for a bit and then I’ll be back in Manhattan (and staying there) as final dress rehearsals and previews start.

Don’s car is all tuned up. We had to make some repairs (the driver’s side window wasn’t working) and one of the wheels was locked. The timing belt needed to be replaced. But our beloved CR-V is now ready to roll.

My longtime blogging friend, Tracie Truran of My Petite Maison, lost her husband this week. It was sudden and shocking and heartbreaking. Tracie and her husband, Shayne, lived in California for many years. They made a big change last year when they found a house in Nebraska, a short sale, and moved there in order to finally realize their dream of owning a home. And now Shayne is gone.

If you know Tracie, you know that, in addition to her exquisite taste and decorating skills, she has the biggest and kindest heart. Her love for animals is deep and profound. Her beloved Great Pyrenees, Bechet, is a beautiful boy.  She has always been there for me, especially as I navigated the last years of Riley and Scout. Tracie is one of the first people I met through blogging and my heart is breaking for her.

I know that most of you probably don’t know Tracie, but some of you who have been around a while might. If you know Tracie, her daughter has started a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses and bills, to help ease the pressures on Tracie as she navigates this heartbreaking journey. Here’s the link.

Tracie blogged for years and now focuses on Instagram and Facebook. You can find her on IG here. How I wish I could wrap my arms around her right now. Rest in peace, Shayne.

Too much sadness now. Everywhere.

Happy Saturday.

Nine Years

February 19, 2017 at 9:50 am by Claudia

First things, first: I was so busy last week with over 24 hours of travel time back and forth to the city, as well as rehearsals for the glorious Anastasia, and with only a few hours at the cottage to try to catch some shut-eye, that I completely forgot that Friday, February 17th was the 9th Anniversary of this blog!

Nine years! How can that be?

Nevertheless, I hit ‘publish’ for the first time on February 17, 2008. That was back when I was on Blogger and I remained there until 2012, when I moved the whole blog over to WordPress. At that point, I started to post every day. A total of 2,733 posts as of today. 106,632 comments. No guest posts. All written by yours truly.

The blog has evolved over the years but it has always been about life here at the cottage. The original tagline after the blog title was ‘Life in our little cottage in the country.” Nothing has changed. It’s still about that, along with our adventures here and there.

During the course of the last nine years, we’ve lost Don’s father, my mother and father, and two beloved pets, Riley and Scout, as well as dear friends. It’s all down on ‘virtual’ paper. This blog of mine is what I always wanted it to be, a journal. Since I was a woeful failure at keeping a real journal, I’d given up on ever writing one until this new blogging medium came along. Somehow, the combination of writing online and adding the visual element of photos did it for me. And as the actress/theatrical coach that I am, I loved having an audience.

Which brings me to you. Over the course of the past nine years, I’ve met so many new friends here at Mockingbird Hill Cottage! Some have come and gone, some have been with me right from the start (I’m looking at you, Donna!) Each and every one of you, present and past, has been a blessing. My world has expanded.

There were many times in which this blog was a lifeline. And I am so profoundly grateful for that. The process of putting thoughts and emotions into words, editing, editing again, not always getting it absolutely right but getting it, nonetheless, has been a game changer for me. At times, it has provided the catharsis I’ve desperately needed. When I go back and read certain posts, I’m moved to tears. Some make me laugh. All of them, from the mundane to the gut-wrenching, are precious to me and I’d never delete them. They’re part of my journey and, I think, part of yours, because you share your thoughts, as well. The comments section has become a way to exchange thoughts with each other and how I love that. We laugh together, we learn together, and we comfort each other.

So thank you, my friends, for being here; for understanding when I needed to take a break after my parents died and after Riley and Scout died. Or this week, when I was so overwhelmed and so tired that I felt like I was losing it. Without you, this blog would have been abandoned long ago.

Next year will be rather momentous, won’t it? 10 years!

__________________________________________

I’m back at home after having finished 6 days of rehearsal on Anastasia. Heavens, I love that cast and everyone associated with this production. I can’t get the music out of my head. I have to go back into Manhattan on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. I’m very, very grateful to be a part of this process.

I reveled in the morning today, a morning when I didn’t have to leave the house at the crack of dawn to travel to NYC but, instead, could sit and sip my coffee and finish Garden of Lamentations  by Deborah Crombie. I was so tired this past week that I couldn’t read anything but the newspaper and obsessively scroll through Twitter. Anyway, the Crombie is excellent as I knew it would be. She is such a wonderful writer. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I love her recurring characters and their world in London and I find I don’t want to leave them when the story is over.

Today? My husband and I are going to have a little lunch at our new favorite place, The Commissary, and visit the bookshop and record store. It’s our belated salute to Valentine’s Day, which, frankly, we never make a big deal of, knowing that we say “I love you” to each other several times a day, every day.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
