Horses, a Caterpillar & Comments

October 11, 2016 at 9:28 am by Claudia

10-11-mgs

I want to take a moment to apologize. Not for my posts about this election – I stand by them – but for my response to some of the commenters. This election has made me angry in a deeply despairing part of my heart. You know how I feel, so I don’t have to re-state it here. But I am  angry and afraid and that, I fear, had an effect on a few of my replies. Instead of responding as I usually do, I lost some of the grace that I hope normally infuses this blog and my writing. I got defensive. That is never a good place to come from when responding to someone.

I am someone who will fight for what I believe is right and speak out. In this particular election year, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I didn’t speak out. But I’m also someone who is a ‘people pleaser’ (both Don and I suffer from that syndrome) and am conflict-averse. How do I balance all of that? Sometimes gracefully, sometimes not.

I went back into the comments last evening and edited some of those replies. You as readers certainly have a right to disagree; we’ve had many lively discussions on this blog during the past 8½ years. (I hope you receive updated comment replies in your email? I’m not sure if you do.) I’ve always kept comments open and have replied to each and every one of them. I’m proud of that, especially considering there are many bloggers who don’t reply and/or don’t allow comments – particularly on a post that might be controversial.

If I turned off comments for a certain post, readers would be upset. If I, as I did only once in the history of this blog, say that I don’t want to read any negative comments on that particular day (which certainly is my right) then some readers get upset about that. I can’t please everyone, nor will I try. But I certainly can make amends for a less than graceful response.

I’m sorry if I hurt anyone’s feelings or appeared uncaring. I can assure you, I am not. Don knows these things stay with me and bother me for days, and sure enough, I was awake before 5 am this morning…worrying. He always offers wise counsel, my husband. I don’t know what I’d do without him.

I’ve said what I have to say about that man who is running for President. I don’t think I need to say more.

I’m moving on.

10-11-white-caterpillar

Look who I found on the picnic table yesterday.

This is a White Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar. There have been quite a few rumors floating around that these guys are poisonous. They’re not, but touching them can cause a physical reaction. Most everyone who touches them gets a rash that itches and stings. Others experience a more severe reaction and have to see a doctor. The hairs are connected to poison glands (according to Snopes, who debunked the more extreme claims about this caterpillar) and release a venom when touched.

Of course, I knew nothing about this until I researched it. Luckily, I didn’t touch him, just the leaf behind him.

They like nut trees and we have a young shag hickory on the property, as well as a couple of black walnut trees.

I wonder if he’s still out there this morning?

Oh goodness, it got very cold overnight and we had a frost warning. I was, of course, worried about the plants that are still blooming. When I woke up, I saw that the water in the birdbath had frozen and immediately looked at the morning glory and moonflower vines. They seem to be okay, which is a relief, especially since it isn’t going to remain this cold.

We took a long trail walk yesterday. There are two horses along the way that belong to a man who lives along the rail trail. Don called him the other day to ask if it was okay for us to feed them an apple and some carrots when we see them. Yes, he said.

10-11-ashley

This is Ashley. She’s the elder of the two. Pliers, the other horse, is her son.

10-11-pliers

This is Pliers. I fed Ashley yesterday and Don fed Pliers.

10-11-pliers2

They need a good grooming, but it’s not our place to do that.

When I was a kid, my grandfather had horses. I’ve always loved them, though I would never claim to be an equestrian or a horsewoman. There are a couple of other horses along the trail, as well, but they are usually so far back in their paddock that we can only see them from a distance. There are also locals who ride their horses on the trail and we love seeing them. Such beauties they are!

Sob. My Red Sox were swept by the Cleveland Indians.

But we’re also cheering for the Cubs. Come on Cubs!

Happy Tuesday.

Giveaway: “Bedrooms” – A Coloring Book by Amanda Atkins

August 1, 2016 at 10:08 am by Claudia

When I first started blogging over eight years ago, I had no idea if anyone would ever find me on the internet, let alone leave a comment. I really did feel like I was a speck in a vast wilderness. I did what was recommended; visit other blogs, leave a comment, and hope against hope that blogger would return the visit.

One of those bloggers did stop by. In fact, she was my very first blogging friend: Donna, of An Enchanted Cottage. Donna, a fellow Northeasterner, and I share many of the same loves, including nature, gardening, decorating and, above all, animals. We have stayed friends for over eight years and she has been steadfast and true. When Riley died, Donna made a beautiful framed piece based on a photo I had posted of Riley and Scout (my favorite photo) and moved both Don and me to tears. It hangs on my wall just outside my office.

Donna is very talented and is a working artist as well as a the owner of a successful Etsy shop. She has two daughters, both adults now (how did that happen so quickly?) and one of them, Amanda, is also an artist.

Which brings me to today’s post. Amanda has just had her first Coloring Book published by Pomegranate Press! Huzzah!

Bedroom Book cover

Bedrooms – A Coloring Book by Amanda Laurel Atkins.

Amanda and Donna graciously sent me a copy of Bedrooms. You know I love coloring books! I was floored when I first held it in my hands. First of all, it has a hard cover that opens flat. (I don’t see that out there in the coloring book world.) So much easier to color! Each page has a blank page as its back, so no worries about coloring on both sides of the sheet of paper. The quality and heft of the paper is perfect for coloring. And each page is laid out horizontally, rather than vertically, just as the cover indicates. The binding runs right alongside the edge above the title. It is beautifully done.

A sample page.

These photos don’t really show the crispness of the lines, but trust me, they are crisp and clear. They’re also not too thick. Personally, I have passed on purchasing certain coloring books out there because the lines are too thick, almost like you’d see in a child’s coloring book. This one is perfect.

Donna and Amanda shared some pages that they colored themselves:

Bedroom Book 1a

Bedroom Book 2

The illustrations are full of books, paintings, animals, and nature, things that Amanda loves.

I often think about my childhood bedroom, which for a girl who needed a good chunk of alone time, was a refuge that was all mine. I could shut the door and be in a world that was entirely my own. That same feeling is evoked in these illustrations.

Amanda: Bravo! Such beautiful work!

By the way, here’s a bit of information about Amanda:

Amanda Purple shirt summer 2016 Backyard

Amanda Laurel Atkins is an artist and illustrator living and working in Boston, MA. Her work is inspired by the 1950s, architecture, fashion, color, animals, and literature. While her paintings focus on portraits of fictional women, her illustrations span a vast array of subject matter, including the many rooms in Bedrooms. Amanda loves walking and exploring her city and spending time with her family, friends, and all the animals in her life. You can explore her work at AmandaAtkins.com.

You can purchase this delightful book in Amanda’s Etsy shop and at Pomegranate Press as well as on Amazon.

Exciting news! Amanda would like to share one copy of Bedrooms with one of my readers. Isn’t that wonderful?

Here are the rules: Leave a comment on this post before 8 pm on Monday August 8th and I will use Random (dot) org to pick a winner.

In your comment: Tell me what it is about your bedroom that you love.

Good luck! And thank you, Amanda and Donna.

Happy Monday.

Flowers. And A Sigh.

July 28, 2016 at 9:59 am by Claudia

Greetings from the hot and humid zone! Actually, this might be the last day of this stuff. Tomorrow we have rain on the horizon and then the temps will drop to the eighties. Still hot, but not nearly as miserable as it is now. The skies have been a vivid blue, with big, fluffy clouds.

It’s just too hot to really enjoy it.

7-28 phloxinthegarden

The phlox has really taken off. It smells heavenly around here.

7-28 rose

The new rose bushes are blooming again.

7-28 liatrisbug1

The liatris is starting to bloom. See the bug flying in from the right?

7-28 liatrisbug

He’s landed.

I’m going to extend the book giveaway one more day. If you didn’t read Monday’s book review, be sure to visit this post. I’m giving away a copy of The Branson Beauty, a really neat mystery I am sure you will enjoy. Leave a comment by the end of the day today and I’ll reveal the winner tomorrow.

A confession: As you know, I have a long association with BlogHer/SheKnows Media. Through this wonderful group that supports bloggers, I also have a couple of ads that run on this blog. Occasionally, I am chosen for a sponsored post. (I’m not in the young demographic, which means it has to be for a specific sort of product that works for my age group and this blog.) These posts are always for a product I support and believe in. Quite frankly, I wish I had these opportunities more often, but I am so grateful when they do occur because I get to share something I believe in with you and I get compensated for them.

I don’t want to go through the whole rigmarole again, but I will say, briefly, that without ads and the occasional sponsored post, I wouldn’t be able to maintain this blog. Period. It costs several hundred dollars a year to keep this little space of mine going and, since we freelance and never know how much money is coming in during any given month, the only way I can pay for it all is through ad income and sponsored posts.

However, if you knew how many requests I get on a daily basis to write sponsored posts for companies that I don’t know or have any connection with, to put sponsored links in a post, to let someone write a guest post – all of which I turn down – you’d be stunned. I don’t want this blog to become about that sort of thing. But the occasional sponsored post through BlogHer/SheKnows, a company with integrity that I believe in? Yes, I will certainly do that.

Yesterday, I had a comment on the post from a reader who wasn’t particularly happy with this kind of post. To be fair, she’s a newer reader, and since the last time I did a sponsored post was over a year ago, is most likely not used to seeing this sort of thing. She certainly has a right to respond to a post but I had to delete the comment because this kind of post, which has a giveaway that is connected to the number of responses to the question I ask at the end of the post and where I will eventually have to count those comments when the contest closes, can’t have comments in the mix that are unconnected to that question.

Here’s where I screwed up. It was a tough day for me yesterday for all sorts of reasons, and I wrote this reader to tell her why I deleted the comment. What I should have done was to take a big breath before I wrote her, because I responded in a defensive tone. To be honest, I was  feeling defensive, wondering why I had to defend yet again a subject matter on my blog. My skin was a bit thin yesterday. And yes, it is  my blog. But I most certainly could have handled it better than I did and when the reader wrote me back, I realized that, and I responded with an apology.

I’m only human. I spend hours and hours on this blog every day, seven days a week. I’m always thinking about what I can share with you. I’m taking pictures for a good portion of the day on an expensive (for me) camera that I bought just for this blog.

The fact is, it’s a part-time job for which I get no compensation. Nothing. Everything goes back into the blog. If I can get a little extra money for all my time, you can be damned sure (if it’s the right thing for this blog) I’m going to take advantage of it.

Keeping all of this in perspective, I’ve had exactly two sponsored posts in about 14 months. Given the fact that I write a post every day of the year, I think that’s just fine. And I hope to have more opportunities in the year ahead. But they might not come my way.

Anyway, I sincerely regret my tone, which was that of a reprimand, and therefore felt the need to explain, once again, this sort of thing to you. Here’s where I sigh. (I’m not exaggerating, I just sighed for the umpteenth time since yesterday.) If you have a problem with this sort of post, that’s fine; just click off the blog and come back the next day. The same thing goes for any post that doesn’t meet with your approval. I surely understand that not every post is a gem or is what you want to read on any given day. I’m not that  interesting!

Anything else I could say would merely be a repeat of things I’ve said in the past.

You get to read this blog for free. But it isn’t free for me. It takes time and money.

I love you all and I usually meet this sort of thing with more grace than I did yesterday. For that, I apologize. I’ll do better next time.

7-28 butterfly1

Let’s close with this eastern swallowtail butterfly. He was hanging around the garden for a quite a while yesterday.

7-28 butterfly2

He’s looks a bit worse for wear. He’s lost part of his swallowtail. But it didn’t stop him.

He’s beautiful.

(I have a book review up on Just Let Me Finish This Page. Just click here.)

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
