A New Path (In More Ways Than One)

June 16, 2014 at 7:12 am by Claudia

I have never been what I would consider athletic. I’ve always avoided exercise, simply because it bored me and I couldn’t commit to an exercise regimen even though I knew that I should do something. Add to that the fact that I used to be very tall and very thin, could eat anything I wanted and not gain a pound. Now I was facing a very different body, one that I didn’t recognize or like. Something had to change.

I am convinced that part of my downfall is my love of sweets. Oh boy, do I have a sweet tooth! So last December, I cut out all refined sugar and stopped buying or making pastries, cookies, pies, and cakes. No candy. Nothing but fresh fruit or, in a pinch, canned fruit with no sugar added.

The pounds started coming off. My ‘exercise’ this past winter came in the form of shoveling mountains of snow. But now that spring is here, my husband (who is as averse to exercise as I am) and I have started hiking.

birdofpreyflying

Yes, you read that right – hiking.

I love to walk. I lived in cities for years and nothing made me happier than to take off for the day, traveling for blocks and blocks, observing people, looking at shop windows, all the time walking briskly. That’s the kind of exercise I like.

But now we live in the country on a country road that, ironically, gets as much traffic as a city street without the benefit of sidewalks. What to do?

We live at the foot of a mountain ridge and there are several parks or preserves up on the ridge. One of those preserves was offering a free pass for a month to local residents. We took them up on their offer. And for the past month, we have been hiking high up in the mountains, covering at least 4 to 5 miles on each hike, gazing out at the spectacular views in this part of the Hudson Valley – feeling good. Feeling more fit.

vistafromthemountaintop This has become our new regimen. No refined sugar. No fattening baked goods. Healthy food. Hiking.

It’s been exciting and it’s definitely a new path for us, one that we feel very good about. Wait a minute…have I finally discovered a healthy exercise regimen that I like? Is it as simple as walking?

Yes.

We barely recognize ourselves! Who are these two hikers?

Just goes to show that it’s always possible to make a positive change.

Gardening With Hydrangeas From The Endless Summer® Collection

May 19, 2014 at 6:29 am by Claudia

I love gardening. When spring arrives, I am outside most of the day, weeding, planting, mulching, pruning, taking photos, and generally sighing with happiness. We’ve lived on this property (my first ever house that wasn’t a rental) for almost nine years and in those nine years, I’ve added perennials to existing garden beds, created 4 new garden beds, and if I could, I’d add even more! There are roses, catmint, poppies, sedum, hosta, boxwood, bee balm, phlox, day lilies, butterfly bush, peonies and two versions of one of my favorites: hydrangeas. Oh, those hydrangeas! Dependable, large, lush. Such beauties they are! So when BlogHer and Endless Summer® Hydrangeas asked me if I would take a closer look at their collection of re-blooming hydrangeas, I jumped at the chance. I don’t know about you, but I see their distinctive blue pots in my favorite nurseries and I’ve been hankering for one of my very own.
Bailey'scloseup

We’re talking gorgeous color here. Some information for you on this collection: “The Endless Summer® Collection is the world’s first and best assortment of re-blooming hydrangeas. They are easy to grow, requiring a low investment in time, money and effort for a big reward. They are beautiful for gardens, containers and in cut and dried flower arrangements. No matter which variety, their beautiful big blooms enhance any outdoor living experience.” How could they not? BloomStruck_Logo_CMYK

The hydrangea that was graciously sent to me by Endless Summer is their new BloomStruck™. I counted the days until it arrived on my doorstep. With every garden bed already full around here, my husband and I decided that we needed a hydrangea on the outside of what we call the Dog Corral and adjacent to a little funky patio that we love. It will definitely add some much-needed beauty to a utilitarian chicken wire fence.

Bailey'sEndlessSummerpot

I dug the hole, which should be one and a half times as wide as the size of the pot. Well, I should be honest here. When I got tired, my husband took over. He’s got more arm strength than me! Scout, our Border Collie, supervised. Isn’t that hydrangea stunning?

Bailey'splantinfo

By the way, Endless Summer includes lots of information as to soil and when and how to plant and everything you need to know about your hydrangea.

Bailey'sgardensoil

Our soil has its share of clay, so I amended it with some garden soil, adding it to the bottom of the hole. That’s what works in my particular soil. Your soil may need different amendments. I loosened the bottom and sides of the root ball, then I made sure the crown of the plant, where the base of the stems meet the soil, was even with the ground. Then I refilled the hole with soil.

Bailey'splanted

All of our garden beds are edged with rocks that we’ve found on the property, so we did the same thing here. (Oh boy, do we have rocks on this property!) I can’t wait to watch this grow. If you’re unfamiliar with hydrangeas, the color of the blooms is directly influenced by the pH of your soil. If your pH is acidic, the blooms will be blue. If they are alkaline, the blooms will be pink. You can easily run a pH test if you’re interested and there are products you can add to the soil to change your soil’s pH. In fact, Endless Summer® offers two products that will do that for you. Color Me Pink™ and Color Me Blue™ are safe, all natural and organic. As for me, I like the element of surprise, so I’m going to watch and wait. Pink or blue, I love this plant. If you’re interested in learning more, please visit the Endless Summer® website. If you leave a comment on this post, you will be automatically entered in a contest to win a $100 Visa Gift Card. Leave a comment with an answer to this question: Do you grow hydrangeas? Tell me how you use them in your garden! Happy Planting,

Having Fun Saving With Target’s New Cartwheel App

January 30, 2014 at 9:07 am by Claudia

Like many of you, I love to shop at Target. In fact, I just bought the headboard for my new California King bed, as well as sheets for that bed at Target.com. So when BlogHer asked me if I would try out Target’s new Cartwheel App, I immediately said yes.

Cartwheel is an app that you can use on your desktop, tablet, mobile web, iPhone or Droid. Cartwheel lists over 700 offers, or coupons, at any given time, with new offers every day. You choose items you are interested in purchasing, add them to your Cartwheel, present your personal barcode to the cashier and your savings are added at checkout.

How easy is it to use? Very. You can sign up through Facebook or through your email account. Since I already had an account at Target.com, I used my sign in information to access Cartwheel. Then I proceeded to look at all the available offers and checked the ones I wanted to add to my cart. I printed out my list from my computer, which also included my personal barcode.

I also downloaded the Cartwheel App for my iPhone. You can do the same thing I did online on your phone or tablet, using the barcode on your phone or tablet app at checkout. You can also use your phone app to scan any barcode in the store to see if there is a Cartwheel offer for that item. Pretty neat.

cartwheellist

After printing out my list, I headed to my local Target. See how the list includes a picture of the item, the discount and when that discount expires? Some items are limited to a quantity of 4 per offer, while other can be used as many times as you wish until the offer expires. If there are limits, you will see that information on your list. You can’t see it but just to the right at the top of the Cartwheel List is my barcode.

You can also use your Cartwheel with any other Target discounts or coupons, manufacturer’s coupons and your REDcard discount. So the savings can really add up.

I grabbed a cart, looked for the items on the list, decided what I wanted to buy and headed toward the checkout.

cartwheelcart

What did I buy? Floor cloths, trash bags, bleach, cotton balls and a 5 lb. box of Clementine oranges. (Mmmm! I love Clementines!) I had to add the Peet’s French Roast Coffee, though it wasn’t on the Cartwheel list. Peet’s is my favorite and Target carries it. That makes me happy.

I trotted off to the checkout and the cashier scanned my barcode. Instant savings.

It couldn’t have been easier. There weren’t any big ticket items in my cart, but I easily saved a couple of dollars on these five household basics. But the list of Cartwheel offers covers every department in the store. Today there were savings on televisions, clothing, bedding, furniture, you name it. I’m thinking that this new app will come in very handy. It’s so easy to access Cartwheel, check out the daily or weekly deals, and then head to the store with your barcode and list.

I am someone who never remembers to clip coupons, try as I might. So this app is made for me. It makes it very easy for me to seek out savings on essentials.

By the way, Cartwheel also has something called Badges. When you start out on Cartwheel you have 10 spots available on your list. As you earn savings with Cartwheel, you can earn badges that reward you with more spots, increasing the amount of items you can have on your list. I earned another spot just by using Cartwheel for the first time at my local Target.

I’m sold on it. It’s simple, easily accessible and it saves me money. A win-win.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
