Butterfly and a New Tenant

August 6, 2025 at 8:55 am by Claudia

Yesterday, I followed this beautiful black swallowtail around the big garden bed. I don’t remember seeing one last year. This week has brought an eastern swallowtail and a black swallowtail. Magical creatures!

We’re in the midst of air quality warnings because of the wildfires in Canada. The sky is very hazy. I’ve limited my time outside because I have respiratory issues. It’s just as well, as I have to do some prep work for my coaching job.

Although I vowed my collection was complete, I saw a particular Blythe on my feed a little over a week ago. I couldn’t stop looking at her. She was the creation of a Japanese customizer. I left a comment on the post asking if she was available and was told she was being sold on Yahoo Auctions, which operates in Japan. I went to the listing and poured over all of the details. But I was uncomfortable trying to use the auction site because non-citizens of Japan have to use a proxy to bid and then, if you win, the item is shipped to the proxy first, then the proxy ships it to you. It seemed very complicated and potentially problematic,

Honestly, I spent two full days pouring over the auction listing.

Much to my surprise, the auction ended without anyone bidding, and I received a message on IG from the artist saying she could sell her to me via PayPal and shipping via EMS which is the priority mail of Japan. I talked it over with Don. He loved her, of course. Should I? Shouldn’t I? I knew I’d never see anything like her again. So, I bit the bullet and purchased her. She arrived here in less than a week.

I promise to give you better pictures, but she arrived late in the day on Monday and this is the best I could do.

The tips of the hair are dyed a darker green. She was listed wearing this kimono and I’m a sucker for kimonos, especially red ones. The eye chips are glass and they’re mesmerizing. And the face up is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.

Look at that face!

(I need to comb her hair. Oh wait, I did, you’ll see it in the following photo!)

In honor of her Japanese heritage, I named her Myoshi, after one of my favorite actresses, Myoshi Umeki. Umeki was the first Asian to win an acting Oscar. She won it for the movie Sayonara, directed by the great Josh Logan. (Don had the honor of working with Logan late in Logan’s life.) I have watched her in Flower Drum Song  over and over again.

Some rearranging of the shelves ensued as I had to figure out how to fit her in. There’s not a lot of available real estate. Mabel is now sitting in front of three girls on the bottom shelf.

Miyoshi is on a stand, asI don’t want to  crush the bow on the back of her kimono.

Lucy’s reaction to her new shelf-mate is troubling…

Anyway, I’m really thrilled to have her here. I will most likely have to sell a doll in the near future, but I dread doing it, so I’m going to wait on that decision.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Flowers, the Roombox, Butterflies & Wild Turkeys

July 23, 2025 at 9:52 am by Claudia

The David phlox is blooming all over the big garden bed, with more yet to open. Yesterday, I was outside and the breeze activated the intoxicating scent of those flowers.

It is the prettiest time in the gardens.

I worked outside for a while yesterday, pruning the brambles and the elm seedlings that pop up in the garden. I’m allergic to elms – if I touch a leaf, I get a welt on my skin – so I donned a long-sleeved flannel shirt and pruned a lot of it. I also got rid of several other seedlings that have staked a claim in the garden beds. After working there for a bit, Papa and Mama Catbird had had their fill of my proximity to the nest. One of them repeatedly gave the warning call, the other gave a warning cheep, not unlike what I hear from robins.

They were not happy with me. I finally gave up; there was one elm on the other side of the porch railing from the hydrangea where the nest is, and I figured that would be too stressful for the birds.

I checked on Mama this morning. She’s patiently sitting on the nest.

A monarch was dining on the coneflowers and then landed on the burning bush.

We saw the most amazing thing yesterday morning. I happened to be in the kitchen. I looked out the window over the sink and there was a wild turkey (I hadn’t seen one on the property for a long time.) I could see 4 babies with her. I told Don to “get over here quickly!” As we watched her walk through the wild grass in the direction of the Dude in the secret garden, we were amazed as we counted 12 babies! 12 little darlings wending their way through the tall grass and following mom as she walked on the stepping stones that go up to the back forty. It was such a gift to see them! She was rather majestic and the babies were adorable. (They’re called poults.)

I tell you, it’s all in the timing. I just happened to be there at the right time.

Lily, Holly, and Pru in the roombox.

I found the perfect place to get light-filled pictures of the interior of the box. See the green showing through the windows? That’s a wall in our upstairs half bath. I carried an old 50s-era step stool from the studio into the bathroom, then carefully placed the room box on the seat. The morning light was perfect. That half bath is so tiny that I had to sit on the toilet seat to get the photo. But it’s perfect. We have so many things in our house and it’s small, so it’s almost impossible to get a picture of this roombox without something that has nothing to do with the ‘scene’ showing through the windows.

This was the roombox when I first got it. There were stairs going up to a loft, but I never really got into doing anything with it. After starting to collect Blythes, I got the idea to repurpose the box for them, so I removed the stairs and loft. It was marketed as the Lori Loft and I got it for about $40 from Target. It’s basically made of foam board. (In the past, I’ve also been known to  use it as a stash for some of my handbags.)

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

The Weekend

June 30, 2025 at 8:36 am by Claudia

We did a heck of a lot of work outside last week; mowing the entire property, pruning, weeding, weed trimming, mowing the trails in the woods. After all of the rain, followed by the dangerous heat, we had a lot of catching up to do. We don’t like the fact that doing all of that work is not as easy as it used to be. But it is what it is.

Anyway, we worked outside again on Saturday. I pruned several bushes, yanked weeds and vines, cleaned up the garden beds. Don mowed the trails. So we rested yesterday. We sat on the porch for an hour or so, all the while expressing gratitude for our house and our property. We are blessed. It was so beautiful out there! Don played and wrote some music. And I played with the girls/dolls.

I have this loft dollhouse that was available at Target years ago. A couple of years ago, I removed the loft and the stairs, with the idea of using it for the girls for another photo opportunity. But, I haven’t purchased any furniture in this scale (1:6) and my initial idea of wallpapering the box isn’t something I want to do now.

So I grabbed a vintage glove box out of the cabinet in the studio to use as a sofa, made a makeshift table from a yogurt container I got in Paris and arranged the girls. That’s a fabric-covered board behind the window as I didn’t want a view of Don’s desk.

I like the way it looks.

Afterward, I brought the girls and animals back down to the den and I ended up removing the dolls from their cubbies, while I dusted and readjusted the wallpaper, which is temporarily attached and tends to slip downward a bit over time.

And Katie got a new outfit.

I can’t tell you how calming it all was! These girls bring peace.

Down by the street, our annual burst of orange beauty is takin place.

Ditch lilies are all blooming everywhere in our little town.

Later, I’m going to snip off the now dead blooms on the lilac bush (the ones I can reach) which will promote more flowers next year. And clean the bathroom and vacuum.

Or not.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
