The lights are on the tree. We left just the lights until today because it’s neat to see the tree that way.

I had to explain the lack of ornaments to Pru.

Sweaters: Some already altered, some about to be altered:

We have a big rain event headed this way tomorrow. It will be unseasonably warm today as this front comes in and then 2 – 3 inches of rain, plus winds, on Sunday into Monday, with a changeover into freezing rain or snow with warnings about black ice.

Oh, goody.

So, I think we have to hang the ornaments today so I can get all the bins safely back into the shed. There are 3 huge bins in the den taking up precious space and it’s already cluttered in this house, and if it’s icy, I don’t want to have to navigate to the shed.

We’re really happy with the tree, though it’s wonky in a way that makes it hard to hang lights uniformly. We don’t care. We like wonky.

This will be short because I spent a chunk of time this morning trying to get a good shot of Pru!

The Cubbies

Yesterday, we picked out our tree and the whole process was quick and easy. Instead of having to go to a couple of tree lots, we found ours at our favorite local nursery. The whole trip probably took 45 minutes. It’s up and the branches are settling and we’ll add lights today. Then we’ll enjoy the lights for a day and we’ll decorate tomorrow or Sunday.

Side note: Trees are incredibly expensive. Insanely expensive. This one was slightly over $100.

Yes, you’ll say ‘get an artificial tree!” But we have no room to store one and Don has absolutely nixed that idea. We had a chat about it the other day and he will not budge. A real tree means everything to him. I get it. I feel the same way. But hell’s bells, they’re expensive!

I’ve sold two more items from the Etsy shop and the second item will go out in the mail today.

Okay. Photos of the wallpapered cubbies. These are not the best pictures as shooting the interior of these spaces is like shooting a picture in a cave. I’ve tried and tried.

I used scrapbook paper that comes in a large size and pieced it together to fit the cubby. And it’s only on the back wall except for the cubby that has the bed.

Bottom shelf – which is truly the darkest and taking a picture involves lying down on the floor.

And then having to get up again.

This is blurry, but it gives you a sense of the whole thing.

I’ll try to get better pictures at some other time.

That pillow is there in case a doll falls. And that has happened. Basket of throws to the left. A very, very big McCoy vase on the right which I’m considering selling, but it’s very heavy and would cost a lot to ship.

The den is a notoriously hard place to get a good picture. Windows on three sides, but darkish.

Okay. I’ve messed with this enough.

Post Season Chores and a Wonderful Read

Yesterday consisted of lots of work outdoors, emptying pots and transporting them to the shed. (There are a few I have left there because, incredibly, they’re still blooming.) Don came out to help. We moved things around in the shed, Don swept it out, we reorganized a few things, the Adirondack chairs moved to the shed. Don moved the heavy vintage pots from the Secret Garden to the porch. Then I rearranged things on the porch, bringing all the outdoor furniture that sits on the Funky Patio and in the Secret Garden to the porch for the winter. Today, I’ll wipe off the cushions and store them under the staircase. Don will take that opportunity to swap out a guitar (we keep some of his guitars stored there.)

Because my back and our knees are a bit sore, we’ll get our tree tomorrow. But it felt good to finally tackle that job. Oh, I think I’ll hang our outdoor Christmas lights today, as well.

And start a puzzle.

Harper is modeling a dress from Miss Milupka, a mother/daughter team that sells the most magical dresses. The daughter lives in NYC, her mom is in Poland. This package came directly from her mom in Poland. I love, love it. I hadn’t decided which girl was going to model it, but then it hit me – it had to be Harper.

I’ll show you the cubbies and ‘wallpaper’ on Friday.

I have to take a moment to say how much I loved this novel. And I mean LOVED. I finished it yesterday and cannot get the characters out of my head. I want to keep them there, even to the point of not starting another novel. This is my first Patchett – for some reason, I haven’t read her work before – and I’m delighted by her beautiful writing style. It flows effortlessly. She’s what I call a ‘plot weaver extraordinaire.’ That is no easy task. There were some surprises; at least for this reader. Get it. Buy it. Check it out from your library like I did. I had to wait a long time for my place in the queue to come up and it was worth the wait. Thank you, Ann Patchett, for one of the best reads of 2023.
