Monday Morning

Well. Monday morning. Time to pay the bills, time to mow, time to clean up the garden and do some weed whacking. It looks like a lovely day out there with milder temperatures and much less humidity. Never thought it would come!

We’re going to mow this morning – Don is taking the corral, I’m finishing up the part of the front lawn that we didn’t get to last week. Constant rain makes for long grass. We’re busy emptying the dehumidifier bucket – it works so well! I now realize the old one was really on its last legs for a long time. This baby is efficient and we are very happy with it.

Saw one of the groundhogs on the porch the other day. I shooed him away. Then, an hour or so later, I saw a baby bunny on the porch! I’ve never seen any of the many critters on this property so curious about the porch. Chipmunks routinely run across the porch but that’s been it until this summer.

Looking forward to hibernation time in October, if only to have a break from Groundhog Watch.

I’ve been chatting with a friend from college days. We were very close friends during our time studying drama in Michigan. We’re actually going to talk on the phone this week, which I’m really looking forward to. He can do anything; act, direct, design costumes and hats (he designed for the Muppets for years – and SNL, too.) He also designed clothes for dolls, as well as designing his own line of dolls. He’s pretty extraordinary. I’ll share more about him later, but it’s been a joy to reconnect.

Saturday Potpourri

• Sophie as Barbie.

Pardon all the Blythe pictures this week. I haven’t really been able to get outside to take any pictures, so Blythe is what you get.

• Thankfully, this oppressive weather is supposed to break later in the day when storms roll through. And the forecast is for much better weather for the week ahead, including much less rain. Huzzah!

• The same guy who looked at the washing machine last February came to look at it yesterday. We are greatly relieved that it is hanging in there. Something or other in the washer was a bit corroded and clogged, which was causing it to leak small amounts of water during the wash cycle. He cleaned and cleared everything and said it’s been fixed. This washer/dryer combo was purchased not long after we moved into the cottage, which would make it nearly 18 years old. He said that everything seems to be working well. Of course, we had to pay for the initial visit and for labor, but it turned out to be about the same as the charge in February and was much less than we were were fearing and, of course, much, much less than replacing the unit. Very good news!

• I haven’t had a vicious comment in a long, long time but the one brief sentence I wrote in yesterday’s post – “I’m on indictment watch” – apparently set someone off. I didn’t mention any names and that was all I said, but heavens, what vitriol! So easily triggered. I won’t share the vile content and Don did say I should have left it there for you to see, but I thought I’d spare you that. Why bother? She’s not worth our time. Blocked, of course – she’s a repeat offender.

• Don has a gig this evening and he’s looking forward to it. It’s not all that far away and I know he’ll have fun. Lucky audience, to hear him sing and tell his stories!

Every once in a while we think about doing a podcast together, sharing our many stories about our work in the performing arts. It’s still something that comes up every once in a while and, darn it, I’m now thinking about it again. Would you be interested?

I’m on indictment watch here at the cottage. It never gets old.

A guy is coming to look at the washing machine today – hopefully (please cross your fingers) it won’t be an expensive repair.

Unbelievably hot and humid temperatures today with the heat index taking things up to the high nineties. Don just went grocery shopping because we want to stay in for the rest of the day and the repairman is coming some time between 8 and 5 and he needs to be here.

We had yet another torrential thunderstorm that seemed to go for hours. I am SO SICK OF THIS. My Annabelle hydrangea has been pummeled. My zinnias have broken from the weight of the intense rain. I’ve never seen a summer like this one.

I’m going to say it: This summer has sucked.

Sorry to complain, but this is the reality of our life right now.

Let’s look at something rather pretty before I sign off:

Little Miss Ella in a dress I’ve had for ages. It’s made by the brilliant The Pumpkin Belle. I only have one of these, but she’s having a sale on Sunday so I’m going to try to get another. They are beautifully made, the fabric is hand-dyed and the details are exquisite. Usually, my girls are in more casual attire, but it would be fun to get one The Pumpkin Belle dress for each of them. Someday. When I come into money.
