Be (Reading) Prepared

January 2, 2017 at 9:05 am by Claudia

What day is it? With the holidays and rehearsals and rehearsals on  holidays and then Monday holidays, I hardly know which way is which. I’m over it. I’m ready to get back on a regular schedule, please.

Sherlock  is back. I knew it was airing last night on PBS, though I had to remind Don about it yesterday. Shocking, full of twists and turns and incredibly well done. I still have some questions about yesterday’s episode and I feel the need to watch it one more time to hear those little underplayed lines that are almost tossed away but are oh-so-important. I can’t stop thinking about it this morning which makes it quite successful, doesn’t it?

One thing about a large coffee table: you can stash lots of current and future reading matter there. From the upper left: several sections of the Sunday New York Times (not yesterday’s, but a week ago) that I have yet to read; Upstream  by Mary Oliver, my favorite poet – though this book consists of essays; a special issue of The Nation  centering on The Obama Years (oh, how I’ll miss him!); underneath that is an issue that you can’t see of Mother Jones with the cover story, “Rise Up”, and you can bet I will; Believing the Lie  by Elizabeth George, which I bought as a remainder a year or so ago and started yesterday, as I have once again realized how gifted George is – it clocks in at 608 pages; All the Light We Cannot See, which I still haven’t started, but will, I promise; underneath that book is A Lowcountry Life  by the late, great Pat Conroy, subtitled Reflections on a Writing Life; and underneath that is Junk Gypsy  by the Sikes sisters, which I read bits of at a time. And next to that is the Sunday New York Times  crossword puzzle. There are also two books under the turquoise lamp in order to give it some height, and two more books of a spiritual nature on the bedside table.

Oh, I forgot to add the Kindle to that list. It’s also here. In fact, I just finished an eGalley housed within its depths.

I come prepared.

Because heaven forbid I am anywhere, anytime, without reading matter. As long as I can remember, that has been a top priority. Carrying a book with me while I run errands, or sit in a waiting room. Packing enough books for a trip. Always having some sort of book to read because you never know when you might have some unexpected reading time, somewhere, somehow.

Today, after I go to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s and stop in at Target and the bookstore, I’ll come back to the apartment, put everything away, and reply to your comments. Then, on this day off, I’ll treat myself to some hot chocolate (using soy milk) and read.

Sounds like a good way to start the New Year.

Happy Monday.

Vintage, Bokeh, & Reading

December 10, 2016 at 9:16 am by Claudia

Sleep, you’re messing with me! Goodness, the last two nights have been, shall we say, somewhat erratic. It was so cold outside last night that I shut the windows and, since I run hot, that was not a good choice. I almost always have a window open at night. My mistake.

Sigh.

I found this set of four vintage hanger boxes (with hangers inside) yesterday.  Such great graphics! All four for $6.00. I had to have them. They were discovered in the midst of searching for more small Shiny Brites, because I ordered a 2 foot tall white tinsel tree from Target yesterday. I like my little aqua tree, but I’d also like something taller. I’ll figure out how I’m going to use both of the trees when I get to the apartment.

Perhaps I should put the same amount of effort into finding some gifts for my husband?

I’m still reading Elizabeth George’s A Banquet of Consequences. I’ve been busy, of course, running errands, shopping and prepping for my work in Hartford, so I’m not able to find time to read as much as I’d like to. I really like her writing, but I find her books to be a slow read. That isn’t a bad thing, there’s simply a slow build up to the actual crime because George is setting up the characters and their back stories.

It’s different, that’s all, and rather welcome at this time of year. Slow living (hopefully), simple Christmas, slow reading.

Night tree.

And, because I have to play around with bokeh during the Christmas season:

It’s a bit of a challenge with a smaller tree, but I like a challenge. Expect more bokeh!

Little Z has made his visit to Santa and his Christmas list is heavily weighted toward Paw Patrol and a wagon. Talking to him during the evening is a true highlight of our day. He is very funny and he makes us laugh. I so wish we could see him on Christmas morning, but that wasn’t going to happen this year given my work commitments. Ah, well.

Happy Saturday.

Mountains, Books and a Surprise

December 1, 2016 at 10:02 am by Claudia

The view outside my office window this morning:

12-1-secondview

The one positive in losing all the leaves on the trees – a better view of the mountains. These, by the way, are the Gunks I referred to in a previous post. The Shawangunk Ridge. It’s a continuation of the Appalachian Mountains and it extends to the Catskill Mountains.

Rock climbers love the Ridge. They come from far and wide to climb here.

The UPS driver dropped off a package yesterday morning. As I wasn’t expecting anything via UPS, I was intrigued.

It was from my sister.

12-1-shawl

She made this beautiful shawl for me! Isn’t it lovely? Meredith and I are both partial to gray. (As my hair turns more and more silvery, gray seems to suit me.)

I often wear a shawl around the house in the mornings and I planned on taking one that I made years ago with me to Hartford. But this one is much, much prettier! So I will be taking this beauty instead.

My sister is very talented. I love her dearly.

I’m going to start in on my research today. This morning I realized that I leave for Hartford in a little over two weeks. There’s much to be done before that date, including buying Don’s Christmas presents!

Tomorrow is the tour of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. We’ve become members of the Sanctuary because we want to support what this incredible facility does. We are joining in honor of Pliers and Ashley, our elderly horse friends, who were saved and rescued by the Sanctuary. I’ll have lots to share with you this weekend.

The rain has finally stopped. It was rather torrential for two straight days, which will certainly help our water table. I’m grateful today for a peek at the sun and for clouds swirling and moving as this front moves out.

12-1-drews

I’m waiting for another Nancy Drew, soon to arrive in the mail. It will be nestled in the space between Anne of the Island  and The Secret at Shadow Ranch, as it’s #3 in the series. I had to do some shelf rearranging yesterday, moving some books to other shelves in order to accommodate my little collection. That reminds me: I need to keep a lookout for more Hardy Boys for Don – maybe a little stocking stuffer or two.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
