Leaves

May 18, 2022 at 8:47 am by Claudia

The catalpa is leafing out. When it’s finished, these leaves will dwarf the leaves of every other tree on the property, save the other catalpas (at least 5 of them) off in the woods. They’re huge and heart-shaped.

This morning, I stood in the doorway taking this photo, not realizing until I’d finished that there was a bunny right by my car. We’ve seen a bunny on the other side of the window over the kitchen sink, and now we’ve seen this one. They might be one and the same. This is good news. We love bunnies and we’ve missed them. Don’s overenthusiastic efforts to establish new trails in the woods a few years ago led to a lack of cover for them. Those areas are slowly reverting to what they were and now we’re seeing bunnies again. So far this morning – chipmunks, squirrels, and bunnies. Yesterday, I saw the groundhog dining in the corral.

I set up the easel for painting yesterday and I was, once again, disappointed in my efforts. Just as happened the first time I attempted to paint, my work looked childlike and just plain bad. It’s like I’ve lost my mojo. Maybe I was meant to have a one-time spurt, like I did last year, and that’s it. I’ll try once more, but yesterday’s attempt was very depressing.

We’re having two coolish days and then we’re supposed to have two very hot days on the weekend. Just as I suspected, we had very little spring and we’re going to go directly to summer. But boy, is it lovely today!

Currently on page 349 of 687 in Something to Hide  by Elizabeth George. I’m loving it.

Other than that, we’re hanging in there. I’m going to water my seeds and the porch plants and soak in the beautiful day.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Bunnies, Books, and a Surprise

April 16, 2022 at 9:30 am by Claudia

In honor of Easter, my Bunny egg cup cozies. Every once in a while I think of moving them upstairs to the office, but I can’t do it. I really like seeing them from my chair in the den. They’re darned cute and they make me smile. That’s mom on the right and her son on the left.

Yesterday, I drove my car for the first time since my back started giving me problems. I needed a little outing all by myself, which consisted of a trip to B & N (still  no Country Living!) to check out what was new in the book world. I also ran into Michael’s to get a yellow highlighter. A simple little jaunt, but it meant a lot to me. It was a beautiful day yesterday, sunny, in the 60s – absolutely gorgeous.

I found a book that I wanted to buy two years ago, but in the midst of lockdown and ongoing COVID crap, I forgot about it. It’s since come out in paperback, so I grabbed it. And I got a couple of magazines because I need some artistic inspiration.

It’s going to rain today, so I’ll park myself in my chair and catch up on Gardener’s World and read. I finished Last Friends  yesterday. The Old Filth trilogy by Jane Gardam (consisting of Old Filth, The Man in the Wooden Hat and Last Friends ) is simply delicious. I so love her writing; the rich characters, the different points of view. I already miss everyone who came alive to me on those pages.

I started Emily St. John Mandel’s newest last night – The Sea of Tranquility.

Last night, I was waiting for Don to come into the den before we switched over to Netflix for the evening. The TV was on – an old Law and Order that I’d seen before – so I was looking at Twitter and barely registering what was happening onscreen. I happened to look up right as this guy came on the screen:

No wonder the episode was familiar! I called out to Don and he couldn’t believe how dark his hair was. That guy has great hair, no matter if it’s brown or gray. (I happen to like gray better – he looks very handsome with some salt and pepper.)

He played a psychologist in this one.

Okay, my friends.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Easter Bunnies & The Tape

April 11, 2022 at 9:18 am by Claudia

Three Vintage by Crystal bunnies out on display for Easter.

Sunny today and warmer temperatures this week. I’ll take it. I’m going to go out and check on the progress of the lilac buds. Update tomorrow.

I also see some tiny green buds on the Shag Hickory and an Ash. The daffodils up in the shade are developing buds, the daffs in the big garden bed have emerged from the ground and the daffs that sprung up from gravel last year – right by the porch – are getting bigger every day. Little things, but boy, do we need to see them about now. Winter hung on longer than usual and we are really ready for GREEN. Speaking of green, the lawn is getting greener by the day – all that rain, no doubt.

After yesterday’s post about Disc Drive, I began to wonder where that cassette tape that Don made for me was. The only car that played cassettes was the CR-V and it’s long gone. Did Don mistakenly throw it out when he cleared out the car? Did I put it somewhere in the house? Have I lost it forever?

I checked out my car. Nothing. If it was in my storage closet in the office it was going to be difficult to find without taking everything out, including the kitchen air conditioner which is also stashed there. (Storage – the eternal problem around here.) Then I had an idea to check the top drawer of the sideboard – a mess of receipts, used checkbooks, batteries, etc. After a lot of digging, I found it!

Don , you are forgiven for writing Disk instead of Disc. And he recorded it in Calgary, not Toronto like I thought. He often worked for a theater company that had stages in both cities. 1999! We had only been together for 5 years. I’m going to listen to it this afternoon. Let’s hope it still plays.

I’ll update you on that tomorrow.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
