The Culprit

June 28, 2017 at 9:00 am by Claudia

I just mentioned to someone in the comments that I rarely have trouble with deer eating things in my garden.

I spoke too soon.

All the day lilies on the side of the house have been eaten. Several of the brown-eyed susans and some of the phlox have been chomped on.

I think he is the culprit:

This is the guy I shooed away from the side garden bed the other day – where all the day lilies are.

So frustrating! And I forgot to spray any deer repellent, so that part of it is my fault. The only thing saving me from being really depressed is the fact that I’m going away for about 3 weeks, and then I’m going away in August, as well, so I won’t see the garden as much as I normally would.

Speaking of critters, these three bunnies were out and about when I first got up this morning. Chippie was also in view, sunning himself on a rock.

Lots to do before I leave and now that I’m back from NYC, I am shifting into overdrive.

The roadside lilies have begun to bloom. They’re so beautiful.

And there are lots of flashes of red in the garden now that the bee balm is in bloom.

I’m off to start in on my To Do list.

Happy Wednesday.

Seen Around the Cottage

May 28, 2017 at 7:44 am by Claudia

Seen around the cottage:

Pretty flowers in the Memorial Garden.

Henry made a rare appearance.

And the he got scared and retreated.

Ants and peony buds go together.

Flowers are blooming on the porch.

Two young bunnies were dining this morning.

Love the ears.

Fleabane in bloom.

Flowers on the volunteer Clustered Black Snakeroot – which has herbal/medicinal properties.

It’s a low-key weekend. That’s good and bad. I have a three day expanse of time with very little happening. Good. And Don isn’t here. Not so good.

His show opens tonight. Jimmy Buffett has been there all weekend and he rehearsed Margaritaville  with the cast and made a surprise appearance at Friday night’s curtain call. The audience went wild. He’ll be there tonight as well. His band is also there with him.

If you remember, Don auditioned for him and Jimmy was also there at the start of rehearsals. Don tells me that seeing the show for the first time was very emotional for Buffett. It’s the first time he’s heard Margaritaville  sung live by someone else, as well as the rest of the score. Tonight promises to be very exciting for everyone involved.

Happy Opening, Don!

And Happy Sunday.

Pansies, Bunnies & Cold Weather

May 8, 2017 at 9:24 am by Claudia

A pox on this cold and rainy weather! February was like May. May is like March. My frustration grew yesterday, so I put all the cushions back on the porch furniture…if it rains, it rains, they’re indoor/outdoor anyway!

Then I got in my car while light rain was spritzing my windshield and I drove to our local nursery. I was craving flowers. Surprisingly, there were quite a few people there, despite the weather. I find that everyone is as antsy as I am. We want to plant. We want warmer weather (coming next week, apparently.)

If it was going to stay unseasonably cold, I had just the solution:

Pansies! Confession: I’ve never planted pansies before, though I love them. Due to my frugal gardening nature, I usually plant all my pots once a season and that’s it. So I would normally plant these urns with something that would last through the summer.

But I threw caution to the winds yesterday and went with the pansies. And they cheered me up!

I have other plants-in-waiting. They’re currently waiting on the kitchen table.

And that doesn’t include impatiens, hanging plants, plants for the galvanized bucket, etc.

And mulch, which I will buy today or tomorrow.

In the meantime, it’s cold.

As happens at least once every spring, I looked outside to see a bunny inside the corral, running around in a panic because he/she couldn’t get out. After going outside and to open the gate, I went back inside and watched for a while, hoping he’d figure it out.

Nope. There was another bunny on the other side of the fence waiting for him. So I finally went outside, walking around the outside of the corral, hoping to nudge him toward the open gate. Didn’t work. Knowing he would be even more scared, but also knowing it was the only way to ‘rescue’ him from the corral, I stepped over the fence into the corral – staying far away – whereupon he panicked, running up against the fence a couple of times before he saw the gate and ran out.

Poor baby. But better that than an entire day stuck in the corral, getting more and more upset. I’m not sure why these guys can’t see the opening in the big corral that leads down to the house and the open gate. Let’s hope that’s the last time that happens. I saw him run around the house to the area just outside the kitchen window, where he stopped, collected himself, and proceeded to clean his paws. He’s okay.

Mowing? Mulching? I’m not sure.

Try not to get too excited.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
