A Special Gift and Lights on the Tree

December 15, 2021 at 9:21 am by Claudia

Yesterday, while having our second cup of coffee, I asked Don if he really wanted an item he had mentioned to me – Don sometimes has impulse ideas for a gift that he ends up regretting. Sure enough, he was wavering. Then, as a muttered aside, he said that what he really wanted was a resonator guitar. What do I know about resonator guitars? Nothing. But I do now. They have built in cones that make the sound bigger and they can be played with a slide, which is great for arthritic fingers and hands. Don has had a hard time playing for any length of time nowadays because of arthritis. This kind of guitar would be a perfect solution. (It’s often used by blues musicians, by the way, and was invented in the 20s before there was electronic amplification of guitars – the cones were needed to compete with the rest of the instruments in a band.)

Anyway. We talked about it and suddenly I thought, “I can buy this for him with some of my pay from the movie! I have the money.” So, I told him I would buy it for him and we started to research and listen to videos, etc. Don’s local music store didn’t have any in stock. But we found one south of us that did. So we got in the car, retrieved the extra bin of ornaments, got on the thruway and drove south (not very far.) We had an appointment to look at the guitar at 12:30. Long story short, we learned a lot more and it’s fabulous and I bought it for my husband for Christmas. Yay!

He is so happy. Playing the guitar has been a constant for Don since he was 10 years old and his Samoan godfather taught him to play a pedal steel guitar. He needs to play. And he’s been taking an online course from a blues guitarist from Detroit (who is also a minister!)

He has spoiled me many times (see dollhouses as Christmas gifts.) This Christmas I’m spoiling him. I told him I don’t need much for Christmas, maybe an inexpensive watch. I’ve been spoiling myself buying dolls and clothes, so I don’t need any big gifts. Just being here in our lovely little cottage with the tree and rest and peace is all I need.

I’ll take a picture of him playing the guitar later today, so you can see what it looks like.

And then we stopped and had fries from Five Guys – something we haven’t done in years. Oh my heavens, they were good.

Then I discovered Don had bought the wrong lights for the tree – he bought the kind that are netted and go over bushes – so I sent him back to the store. After he came home with the right lights, we put them on the tree and stopped for the day. We’ll put the ornaments on this morning.

For someone who just wants to rest, my days have been very busy since I got home.

Actually, I really like just having the lights for a day or two. That’s a piece of vintage fabric at the base of the tree.

Monty is already adorned for the holidays.

I’m keeping it simple this year. I have no idea where the putz houses are and I’m not looking for them. They’re not lost, I’m just not sure where I put them. Unless I have a burst of energy, I’m not decorating the dollhouses. Just the tree and few little things here and there.

I’m tired and my body is trying to recover from the insane schedule I was on for six weeks. I keep nodding off in the late afternoon and evening. The less holiday decorating I have to do, the better.

We’re watching Get Back, the Beatles documentary. Don has already watched it once and now we’re watching it together. It’s fascinating.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

The Tree Saga

December 13, 2021 at 10:06 am by Claudia

Wouldn’t you know it? We had a Christmas tree saga.

We got going early yesterday morning and drove to the nursery where I buy my plants and where we buy our tree. Every year. We’ve been buying trees there for 16 years. Usually, we get a tree during the second week of December, though during Covid and lockdown, we got one earlier because we needed the lights and cheer. So, my point is that buying at this time is nothing new to us. Still a couple of weeks away from Christmas, but not last minute.

We drove to the nursery and I commented that there weren’t many cars there, which was unusual. Then we parked. And stared at a completely empty tree lot. “Where are all the trees?” I said. I briefly though they might have moved them to another part of the property. But no, there was nothing.

When we went inside to ask what the heck was going on, they said they ran out. There is apparently a shortage of trees this year, which a lot of you probably know about, but I’ve been in a filming bubble and had heard absolutely nothing about it. We were stunned. We’ve purchased even later than the 12th and there were always scads of trees on their lot. They suggested we go to another local business  because they still had a few trees left. When we arrived there, all they had were Douglas firs, not Frasier firs, which is what we always get. I’m not a fan of Douglas firs – the branches aren’t very strong – but we were panicked, so we bought a small, but wide tree. Put it on top of the car, took it home.

It wouldn’t fit in our stand.

Evidence:

The hole in the bottom of the tree had been drilled off center and it wouldn’t stand up. We knew we were going to have to get another kind of tree stand, so after a bite to eat, we were back in the car on our way to Lowes. When we pulled in that parking lot, we saw people carrying trees to their cars, so, instead of buying a stand immediately, we headed to the trees. They had a fair amount remaining and they were Frasier firs. We grabbed one, bought a new stand because this tree didn’t have a hole in the bottom, and drove home with yet another tree on top of the car. The first tree is now in a zinc bucket full of water and Don has secured it to the porch. We’re going to put lights on it this afternoon.

The second tree.

Not to mention, we went to our storage facility to pick up all the bins full of ornaments and forgot one of them, so we’ll have to go back there tomorrow and get the missing bin. We will decorate the tree tomorrow.

All of this was exhausting simply because I was already very tired, as was Don, who spent two whole days cleaning the house in preparation for my return, bless him. So today, except for putting the lights on the porch and the porch tree, we’re taking it easy.

We watched Alien  last night, one of our favorite movies.

Zoe. Elena carved her face beautifully. The eyebrows! The worried look! (She reminds me of me as a little girl. My hair was the same color, but longer, and I had the bangs and the worried look.) All my girls have their own individual look, down to the lips and nose and eyebrows.

My caption for this photo (on my Blythe IG account) was:

“Sophie (on the left) remembering that wonderful month when she was an only child.”

I get it, Sophie. I get it.

Note that I cut Maeve’s bangs. They were too long

The entire time I was gone, I had very little time to read. I did read one book – Louise Penny’s latest. In fact, I finished it on my last day there. I loved it, but wish I had had more uninterrupted time in which to read it. As it was, my experience was a choppy one. I don’t know that I think it’s her best, but every book she writes is excellent and powerful and full of humanity. And it’s really silly to try to pick out her best when every one of them is a gem.

Okay.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Day Two Hundred Ninety

December 28, 2020 at 9:29 am by Claudia

I ordered two jigsaw puzzles for this winter. I’ve been eyeing the puzzles offered by John Derian. Since I can’t get to his shop in NYC, I ordered them online. I was going to order them from his site but the shipping was really pricey, so I caved and ordered through Amazon Prime.

Aren’t they gorgeous? Butterflies and a nineteenth century map of New York City. Derian’s work and aesthetic are exquisite. He’s on IG and I’ve spent hours looking at photos of his NYC apartment and his home on Long Island. I absolutely love the way he decorates. I’d like to be him when I grow up!

I digress. Winter is here, which means more time inside and I need something to do besides reading and working on dollhouses. So…puzzles are back. I’m not sure when I’m going to start one, but soon.

A reader of this blog – Janet – contacted me and asked whether I wanted a piece or two of the Petite Princess furniture she had when she was a child. I already had a couple of them, but I didn’t have the chaise. She generously sent it to me, along with a little birdcage and a plant.

Petite Princess furniture is 3/4 or 1:16 size, so it doesn’t fit in my 1:12 dollhouses, but it does fit in the folk art dollhouse. I’m thinking it will look neat on the upper floor.

Check out this mini snake plant! I just published photos of my parents’ snake plant in bloom and, as always, I got lots of responses from people saying they had no idea that snake plants bloomed. They do. And evidently the maker of this plant knew that because the white flowers are very much like the blooms on my plant. I love it.

Thank you, Janet! I’m honored that you shared these beauties with me.

Yesterday was about washing sheets, vacuuming, dusting, etc. I also cleaned and dusted Don’t mini studio. Because it’s so close to the window it collects a lot of dust. Now that we have new mini-blinds, I’m going to make sure that it isn’t in direct sunlight for too long. I already see a repair I have to do on the floor because the glue has lifted.

That’s about it. I’m still waiting for Don’s other present. Sigh. If it doesn’t come today, I’m going to reorder. (It shipped out of Los Angeles on December 11th and there have been zero updates since then.) His present for me that was also missing arrived on Saturday. He’s holding it until the other present arrives and then we’ll exchange gifts.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
