Day Two Hundred Eighty-Three

December 21, 2020 at 7:58 am by Claudia

I love this ornament. The aged, faded beauty tells a story, not a personal story because I bought it a few years ago, but the story of many Christmases in some house, somewhere.

Oh, this is a strange time. A strange week. We’re doing our best to make it festive, though we’re missing gifts. Unless a miracle happens, we might be delaying our gift exchange. Fingers crossed, though it’s surely not the end of the world. This morning, we’re going grocery shopping for the week, so I’m writing this post early in the morning. We want to get there before it becomes too crowded and I’m desperately trying to wake up enough to write a list.

Tonight is the start of our week of Christmas movies every evening. We plot this out every year, usually ending with It’s a Wonderful Life  or A Christmas Carol  (with Alastair Sim) on Christmas Eve. Tonight will be White Christmas.

I’ve been feeling crappy for the last three days – my sinuses are really acting up. It’s time to start using the humidifier again as I suspect the dryness of the house is making things worse.

By the way, my parents’ 45 year old snake plant (sansevieria) is blooming. It has the most wonderful scent. I repotted it last year and it didn’t bloom (I was prepared, as I’d researched it.) But this year? It’s back! The paperwhites in the kitchen should bloom by Christmas. The ones in the den are growing a bit more slowly. That’s fine with me. I’m all for extending their bloom time.

Less than a month until Inauguration Day.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Day Two Hundred Eighty-Two

December 20, 2020 at 9:37 am by Claudia

Two of my Vintage by Crystal Christmas beauties on the piano.

This is the first year that I haven’t purchased any new ones. That’s not to say I won’t in the future, but display space is at a premium here (they live in the pink cabinet in my office, which is full.) Plus, I’ve been buying miniatures and that’s where my wee bit of discretionary income has been focused.

Speaking of miniatures, if you didn’t read the comments yesterday, you didn’t see that I ended up ordering the Beacon Hill. I found it on Wayfair for less than it was listed for on the Greenleaf website. Plus, they ship quickly. It should be here on Wednesday, but with the way thing are going lately, that’s questionable.

When I wake up in the morning, I usually look at something I was excited about the day before with a jaundiced eye. I don’t know why that is, but it happens more often than not. Groggy, no coffee yet, congested? Who knows? So this morning, I wondered why the heck I bought it, it was going to be an enormous project, where would I put it – there is absolutely no spare room here, what makes you think you can build this monster…etc. The good news is that within about 10 minutes, I see things more clearly. A sip of coffee and feeling a bit more awake helps. Now I’m excited again. By the way, I’ve learned to ignore those first-thing-in-the-morning thoughts. I just wait them out, knowing sanity is on the way.

Don is incredibly supportive (he’s literally surrounded by dollhouses here at the cottage) and he was the one who pushed me to go ahead an order it. Plus, my fellow dollhouse lovers; Helga, Megan, Andrea (all of whom have their own Beacon Hills) and Barbara urged me on, giving me quite sound reasons why I should do it.

It’s a gray day today. I figure if we’re going to have lots of snow on the ground it should be sunny. Unfortunately, it isn’t. I think we’re going to get some snow showers later this morning.

I found the mini Christmas accessories I had been looking for. They were wedged in the back of a drawer. I had a moment of panic that in one of my vigorous “clean everything” phases I might have thrown them out.

Caroline will be self-isolating this year, as will so many of us. She’ll light a fire in the living room, then she’ll come upstairs to the den to open her presents, most likely while she’s on a Zoom call with family. Sound familiar?

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Day Two Hundred Seventy-Five

December 13, 2020 at 10:32 am by Claudia

I’m going on very little sleep. It was a strange night. I had a nightmare early on – I barely remember it now. I hardly ever have nightmares, so that in itself was strange. Anyway, I got up to use the bathroom and I never really got back to sleep except for a doze here and there.

But let’s get to what I was doing yesterday. I decided to make a Christmas tree for Dove Cottage. I was also going to make one for the Lake House, but I forgot how long it takes to make just one and quickly realized that was a no go. Next year.

Don was downstairs writing music and recording. I was upstairs making a mini tree. Both activities required a lot of meticulous attention and at the end of the day, we were tuckered out!

There is a post somewhere on the blog showing the steps I took to make that first tree. If I can find it, I’ll post the link. Found it: it’s here. Though it doesn’t actually say anything more than I’m writing here!

It starts with a tree like this one:

This is a basic bottlebrush type tree that you can find in tons of stores at this time of year. I bought a bagful of Lemax trees on sale a few years back at Michael’s. The one I used for this project was exactly the same size as the tree pictured.

You take the tree and cut back most of the bottlebrush, leaving about a half inch or less (you’ll have to eye it and see what you’re comfortable with) so that you retain some structure in which to anchor the lycopodium, which is a kind of preserved moss, sometimes referred to as preserved pine. A note about lycopodium: you can find it at Earth and Tree Miniatures for $5.00. Pretty good deal! I got mine from miniatures (dot) com several years ago but I don’t think they carry it anymore.

After you cut it down, you start clipping small pieces of the lycopodium and gluing them in, one “branch” at a time – the largest being at the bottom with the tree getting narrower toward the top. I trim as I go, trying my best to keep the tree looking natural, and then I go over it once again when it’s finished. This takes a long time. You will have glue all over your fingers!

Here’s what it looked like when I finished it:

I was finally able to use one of the tree toppers I found at the miniature show a year or so ago!

Then I decorated with some stuff I had on hand. I use those holiday picks that you find at Michael’s. Remove each glittery ball from the pick and glue it into the tree.

These are a bit larger than the ones on the tree in Hummingbird Cottage, but I’m fine with that. I remember my aunt and uncle having some large ornament balls on their tree and I loved them. Eileen, I’m talking about your mom and dad!

And here it is in the dollhouse. I’ll try to get a sunnier picture later. (Some of you keep referring to the great light I have in the studio. I don’t. That’s simply the editing I do on the photo.)

I have to make some sort of tree skirt. I’m also missing my little box of Christmas presents, etc., that I use in creating these scenes. I’ve looked and looked and can’t find them! Here’s hoping I find them soon.

Before I forget, there’s a link for Don’s latest song on the Facebook page for Don and Dan’s collaborations. Here is the link. It will take you to their page and then you’ll see a post with another link.

Okay. Have to go. I didn’t mean this to turn into a tutorial, but someone mentioned that they’d like to know the details, so there you go!

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
