Visions of Sugarplums

December 24, 2013 at 9:03 am by Claudia

The puppies were nestled all snug in their beds…..

I’m afraid that ‘Santa’ will be spoiling a little girl this Christmas. I know for a fact that he visited a local pet shop and went a little crazy. Santa knows that Scout loves nothing more that sniffing and opening presents, whether they are meant for her or for her mom and dad. Doesn’t matter. She loves presents. Her excitement level jumps off the charts.

As Don said, “I’m almost more excited to watch her open her presents than I am to open mine.” Spoken like a devoted father.

I have a few last-minute errands to run this morning. And some wrapping to do.

Having been off sugar for a month now, Don and I made the rather tough decision to forego our annual Christmas Coffee Cake. We love it. We’ll miss it. But we don’t want to start those cravings up again. It was close, though. I had the recipe out and was about to shop for the ingredients when we came to our senses. We’re losing weight and the cravings are gone, so we’re going to stick with our plan.

I woke up this morning with that feeling I had when I was a kid. Excited about Christmas, yes, but already sad that it’s almost over. Do you ever feel that way? I looked around at our simple, beautiful decorations and felt a wave of sadness come over me. Isn’t that silly? I feel the same way on my birthday. It’s finally here and it’s almost over. I must work on being present in the moment.

We’ve been dealing with some issues with my dad for the past day or so. And we’re realizing that he isn’t doing as well on his own as we had thought. He’s also getting more angry and argumentative and just plain mean with people other than his daughters. (We are battle scarred veterans of these wars.) But he’s in his right mind, so we really can’t make any changes without his permission. I’m already dreading the confrontations that I can guarantee you are coming. I know many of you have dealt with this sort of thing. Wish us luck.

But back to happy things: I hope your Christmas Eve is wonderful and magical and peaceful. We’re watching  It’s a Wonderful Life this evening. George Bailey, Clarence, angels and wings….heaven.

Scoutie has visions of sugarplums dancing in her head. We love our girl.

I’ll be back with Christmas greetings tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday.

A Christmas Memory

December 23, 2013 at 8:50 am by Claudia

chair&tree

After two days of rain and temperatures that soared to 63°, we are left with a few mounds of snow.

That’s it. It’s muddy, it’s raining, and it definitely is not going to be a white Christmas. It will get colder by Christmas day, but no snow.

As depressing as that might be, it is not comparable to some of the terrible weather conditions many of you have had to deal with; ice storms, power outages, just plain horrendous weather. We had a conversation about that on this blog’s Facebook page yesterday. My heart goes out to all of you and I pray that power is restored and the damage, if any, is minimal. Stay safe.

Speaking of snow, I have fond memories of one of our first Christmases here in the East. After having lived in San Diego for eight years (me) and off and on his whole life (Don), we made the big move to the Eastern part of our country many years ago. We rented a little cottage, even smaller than this one.

On Christmas Eve, the weather report predicted a blizzard for Christmas Day. My West Coast born and bred husband was excited, to say the least. We had everything we needed in the house, the presents were bought, the tree was decorated, the four of us (Don, me, Winston and Scout) were safely nestled inside our cottage. Our neighbors called us on Christmas Eve morning. They were headed down to Princeton, NJ for Christmas Day but they had decided they should leave early to dodge the storm. They were taking care of our other neighbors’ dogs. Would we mind taking over those duties for a couple of days? Absolutely not, we said.

It was a huge blizzard. White-outs. Snow swirling everywhere. Many, many inches on the ground.

After eight years in San Diego, this Midwestern girl was thrilled. Don was, too. We had to shovel a path outside the door and take the dogs out on leashes, so we could see them and keep them safe. When it came time to venture next door to feed and let out our neighbors’ dogs, we slogged through snow drifts that seemed a mile high, falling down, laughing, pushing against the wind that threatened to keep us from our destination.

We felt like kids again.

I remember that day every year at this time. It was magical. The wonder of it all still stays with me. I think we lose a lot of that wonder as we grow older. I know that in my case, after years of big snowfalls in Michigan, then in Philadelphia and Boston, I got sick of the whole thing and couldn’t wait to move to San Diego. Familiarity breeds contempt. I’d had enough. And though I loved San Diego, after eight years there, I missed the seasonal changes that are part of living in this climate. I missed the wonder that can come from watching the leaves turn vivid colors, seeing the green buds of Spring transform the landscape and watching snow blanket the horizon as far as the eye can see.

Of course, I complain about all of the above. Leaves need to be raked. Spring brings rain and mud. Summer’s humidity can be oppressive. Winter’s snow needs to be shoveled.

I’m human.

But, if I take a moment to remember that particular Christmas, I’m a kid again. And that’s a good thing.

Happy Monday.

A Cornucopia of Chat on a Saturday

December 21, 2013 at 8:32 am by Claudia

Say what???

The temperature is going to reach 62° tomorrow.

Remember my earlier comment this week that I was sure we would have a White Christmas? Hmmm. The temps during the last few days have been in the forties, so there’s already been some snow melt. But 62°? Yikes.

Dear Mother Nature: I would like you to leave at least a couple of inches of snow on the ground for Christmas. After all the shoveling and salting we have done, you owe us that, don’t you think? Thank you, your pal, Claudia.

Shopping is just about done here. I don’t think there will be any surprises, as we were both very specific about what we wanted. That happens more and more as we get older because we already have so much ‘stuff.’ And we have a very limited budget. Scout needs some presents from Mom and Dad and Santa; that will be taken care of today. I need to see just how much wrapping paper I have left from last year. And tape. A year or so ago, I ran out of tape and had to use blue painter’s tape on the presents. I hang my head in shame.

I wish I was one of those people who love to wrap gifts and make pretty bows. I’m not. I get very impatient with the wrapping process. I start out with high hopes but, after wrapping one present, I’m already tired of the whole thing. Sad, but true. All that effort and then it’s torn off immediately. Sort of how I feel about cooking – lots of time and effort and in ten minutes, it’s gone. And to add insult to injury, you have to clean everything up.

Yesterday, Don and I took a little trip to a neighboring town north of us. They have a funky little country store that I wanted to explore. The advertisement said they had model trains and dollhouses, among lots of other things. Well, the dollhouse section was pretty pathetic. Nothing for me there. But the train section was amazing. Don has been talking about model trains a lot lately. He’d really like to start in on that hobby. But it takes money and space (which we are sadly lacking.) Heck, I’d love to see him indulge in a fun hobby like that, especially since my dad had a wonderful HO train set up in our basement. I grew up with model trains.

So we looked and asked questions and Don bought a book about starting a model train collection. I had this idea that we could buy some plywood that would fit over the bed in the office/studio/guest room. He could build a little set up right on the plywood. And then we could remove it on the rare occasion that a guest stays the night.

Speaking of Don, I took some pictures of him the other day and this one is going to be his newest headshot:

Hello, handsome! (I’ve got a crush on this guy.)

Today’s Holiday Bokeh:

snowscenebokeh

Judy gave me that little snow-globe-in-a-salt-shaker last year.

Upcoming dates to remember:

January 5, 2014: Scout’s 15th birthday (I see a party hat in her future.)

January 7, 2013: The Poisoner’s Handbook airs on PBS, starring, among others, Don Sparks.

And, if you’re interested, I posted a book review yesterday. Be sure to leave a comment if you’re interested in winning a copy of  The Seduction of Miriam Cross.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
