Back Home

February 7, 2020 at 10:52 am by Claudia

Late start this morning. I slept in until 8 am –  a true rarity. After the past two days of very little sleep and the intensity of the trip to Hartford and back yesterday, I was well and truly wiped out.

The weather was a huge factor in my drive yesterday. On the way to Hartford, it was foggy and hard to see. On the way home, at night, it was raining heavily and I could barely see the white lane markers on the highway. I was so tired and tense from the journey that my muscles ached when I got home. But I did get home and boy, was I happy to see my husband open the door when he heard my car in the driveway. It really feels as if I ran a race yesterday. The actual work, watching the run-through, taking notes, and talking to the actors, was relatively easy. The show is in good shape and the cast is doing terrific work. It was just the other stuff that was hard; trying to find a moment to eat something, the terrible weather, the long drive.

It’s done and I did it all on my own, despite an offer from Don to come with me. So I’m giving myself a little pat on the back. But just a little one.

I arrived home and Don shared the news that a friend of ours, Mike Kruglinski, had died. Mike lived in our town, was very active in politics (which is how we met him) and was one of the kindest men I’ve ever had the privilege to meet. His spirit was so joyful and positive. He had been fighting cancer. Mike’s wife, Diane, sometimes reads this blog. My heart goes out to his family. He will be sorely missed. Last year, we lost another member of our Democrat Committee, Barbara Sides. Too much loss.

Another of Don’s friends here in town is battling cancer. Another, back in California, has serious heart problems.

It’s all too much sometimes. Our prayers and thoughts are with all who suffer loss and who are faced with illness.

Don is reading Walden  and he really loves it. I should read it again because I read it in high school, when it was an assignment, and I know I would get much more out of it at this point in my life. We spent this morning talking about books and the power of reading, the intimacy that comes with reading the words on a page – just you and the book and your reaction to those words. It’s such a blessing, reading. Especially in these times.

I’m almost done with Transcription  and then I’ll move on to The Snowman  by Jo Nesbø. Come to think of it, except for some small chores that need to be done, that’s how I’m going to spend my day.

Happy Friday.

“Hartford Isn’t Kind To My Hair”

January 16, 2020 at 10:54 am by Claudia

We’re having another period of all-day-long-high-winds.

We’ve had so many of them lately.

It is rather beautiful, though. Sunny, windy, sometimes dark, then sunny again. We have a front bringing in much colder weather with a significant snowfall on Saturday. Next week, the temps will pretty much stay in the twenties. I guess our relatively mild stretch of weather is ending.

I got home around 6 pm yesterday after a concentrated stretch of coaching. After checking in with the director, I walked back to the apartment building, loaded up my car and headed home. It was rush hour, so traffic was slow at times and the whole time I drove directly west, the slowly setting sun was blinding me (and every other driver on the road). That, coupled with some insane drivers, made for a tense drive home. I was very glad to arrive home safely. Don had dinner ready and I was so tired I could hardly construct a complete sentence, but today is better.

I have no plans for today except to take it easy (and vacuum, something Don doesn’t think of doing) and enjoy being back in this little haven. I’m reading one of the Maigret novels by Georges Simenon. It’s a series I’ve always known of, but have never read. I picked this one up several months ago at Oblong Books. It’s only about 160 pages, so it will be a relatively quick read. Then I’ll tackle the newest Michael Connelly, which I had on hold with my local library system. There were so many people in the queue ahead of me, I thought getting it in my hands would take much longer, but it came in while I was gone and Don went to the library for me and picked it up. I’ve read every Michael Connelly ever written. I’m a huge fan.

As to the title of this post, I said these words to my husband last night. The water in Hartford is not kind to my hair. I forget this fact until I have to go back there. It renders it limp and useless. I can’t wait to take a shower here this morning and get it back in shape!

No offense, Hartford.

Happy Thursday.

Working

January 15, 2020 at 9:30 am by Claudia

This is all I’ve got for you.

Yesterday was gray and rainy here in Hartford. I also worked all day long and it was dark by the time I emerged from rehearsal.

This morning, I’m doing some work and gathering my things together so I can load up the car when I’m back from rehearsal. The cast is quite talented. One cast member is a former student in the MFA program in San Diego and I worked with him about 8 years ago. He’s a lovely guy and it’s great to see him again. Everyone else is new to me, which is always exciting.

I have to do a lot in very, very little time. It’s almost impossible to coach this way, but I plan to rise to the occasion and do my best. I love Elizabeth’s adaptation of Jane Eyre. I think she’s done a great job. She’s also the director, so it’s definitely a project from her heart.

I’m done around 3 this afternoon and then I’ll walk back to the apartment and get my car and start the drive home. Don will have dinner waiting, bless him. I miss him and my little cottage and can’t wait to get back home.

But first, coaching.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
