Mini Pottery on the Move

September 16, 2019 at 9:48 am by Claudia

The same day that I moved the bulletin board (see yesterday’s post) I took down the little shelf where I displayed my mini pottery. It was too crowded, everything was jammed together. So I moved my little collection to this shelf in our bedroom, which had previously displayed egg cups.

Every piece has a little breathing room now.

And the wall where the bulletin board hangs is much less crowded. The visual clutter had been starting to get on my nerves! I don’t spend much time up in the office at the moment, but that will change once it gets colder. I’ll get back to my rescued dollhouse, which has been patiently waiting for me since Spring arrived.

Next Saturday, I plan to drive to the Hartford area and attend the annual miniature show put on by the IGMA (International Guild of Miniature Artisans.) I’ve found some great pieces there in the past. I’m on a budget this year, so I can only buy a few modestly priced items, but the main objective is to go and be inspired. It’s also the only show relatively close to my home. There’s a huge show every year in Philadelphia, but I believe it’s in November, and I never seem to be able to get there for whatever reason.

This is a more modestly sized show which suits me fine.

Hold onto your hats…this is grocery shopping day! Whoo hoo!

That’s all the excitement on our plate today.

Don had a pretty good day at the Farmers Market, though it was hot out there and yellow jackets kept flying around all the produce, annoying everyone.

Happy Monday.

A Rainy Saturday

April 20, 2019 at 11:03 am by Claudia

Goodness, it rained all night long and it’s still raining! We have a flash flood watch up for this area of the Hudson Valley. We’re always fine, as our little cottage sits well above the river across the street. Everything is getting greener and greener – and it is  April – so showers are welcome.

A bit of an egg cup potpourri today.

On the left: a wooden egg cup with a porcelain top given to me by my mom, Devon Ware – a gift from a fellow blogger who was born in Devon (the other side says “Laid Today,”) an egg cup from Prague – a gift from Don, a flowery egg cup found at the flea market in Paris, a lustreware bear egg cup – a gift from my friends Lynne and Sean, and a Cottage Ware egg cup from England.

There are four more that I’ll share tomorrow. I’m determined to because I love them but often forget to show them because they’re on display in the kitchen.

And…drum roll…here they are:

The gang’s all here!

That’s Bashful to the left of Snow White – I couldn’t get his name in the shot.

Oh heavens. I love them!

I love all my egg cups, but I have to admit I have favorites. Some of the figural egg cups that I collected at the beginning of this adventure are now almost impossible to find. I even remember the bidding wars that I got into in order to nab them! We lived in a rental cottage on the other side of the Hudson River when we first moved East. I started collecting in 2002. I would sometimes sneak out of bed in the middle of the night to go into the next room to use the computer to bid on an egg cup. It was the early days of eBay and there was no PayPal, so I would send money orders to the sellers. After receipt, they would put the egg cup in the mail, resulting in a long wait until the package was in my hands.

It was awfully fun.

I think the first egg cup in the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs series that I bought was Doc. I’ll have to go back and check. And Doc was my only Dwarf for several years. Grumpy or Bashful next? I’m not sure. That will be a good mini-project: putting a chronology together. And of course, I can figure it out by consulting this blog, which I often do when I want to remember what I was doing or buying or planting. Just checked: the second dwarf was Dopey!

We watched The Quiet Man  last night. Believe it or not, it’s the first time we’ve seen it. What a wonderful movie. John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara are terrific, but my favorites are Barry Fitzgerald and Victor McLaglen. Certain elements of the plot – the woman as “property,” John Wayne dragging Maureen O’Hara through endless fields despite her repeatedly stumbling in the grass – wouldn’t fly today. I cringed a bit as I watched those scenes. But it was filmed in 1952; another time, another era. (I should know, it’s the year of my birth!)

I hope you’re having a lovely holiday weekend.

Happy Saturday.

Solitary

March 5, 2019 at 10:55 am by Claudia

In a desperate attempt to find something that is not the usual photo on the blog, Claudia wanders the kitchen and comes up with this. (Note that this wall has yet to be painted yellow.)

On top of the cabinet, which is what I was concentrating on: two Fiesta mixing bowls from my former collection (I saved my favorite pieces) and a Fiesta gravy boat. Sheep: salt and pepper shakers and another one given to me by a friend. A fisherman from our long ago Dept 56 collection that Don always thought looked like him. A McCoy vase. A McCoy pot planted with pothos. An old tin that I found at the Country Living Fair.

And for those of you who said I should use my great-grandmother’s china…

In addition to our everyday china, I have yet another set of “good” china that I fell in love with several years ago. After searching for the pattern, I happened upon a guy selling all of this on eBay. And he lived in New York State. I love this set.

But it’s on display. I use some pieces occasionally, but it basically lives here in the cabinet. As my great-grandma’s set will live in the cabinet in the den.

We eat our dinner on trays in the den. We rarely use the kitchen table. We got into the tray thing years ago and we like it. Since we spend great chunks of the day together, it’s not as if we have to meet up at the dinner table to discuss our day. We’re discussing throughout the day.

Also, I do not like to entertain. I didn’t inherit that gene. When I do entertain, I feel incredibly stressed. This house is small and it gets tight with just Don and me, let alone others.

But to be honest, I’ve never been comfortable entertaining. I’m solitary, remember? I like my quiet and my routine. It’s amazing that I somehow managed to let Don into my life. (Best thing I ever did!) Since he feels more or less the same way, though he’s definitely more social than I, we are fine the way we are.

I also don’t like to go to parties. I’ve had a lifetime of cast parties and opening night parties and closing night parties and I usually do my duty and make an appearance, but I can’t wait to leave and breathe fresh air and not have to make small talk or shout over the noise. I can’t wait to get out of my fancier duds and put on jeans and a t-shirt or, better yet, my flannel pajamas.

When I work as a coach, I’m surrounded by lots of people all of the time, lots of energy, and lots of noise. The same can be said of my years teaching. So when I get home, I crave quiet. I am capable of being social and charming and chatty, but I much prefer the opposite. I’m an introvert, I guess.

Though Don would certainly say I’m chatty at home and I suppose I am. “Solitary but chatty…” see blog sidebar.

You can better see the pattern of the dishes in this photo of a serving dish.

I’ve got china and pottery everywhere in this house, stashed on shelves, stashed in cabinets, on tables, on desks, on top of the kitchen cupboards.

A couple of days ago, we finally managed to shovel the far side of the parking area near the shed where Don usually keeps his car. He’s been having to park in the driveway. We were too sick at the time to shovel it out and then we kept getting those storms with ice and it became impossible to shovel. Too many layers of ice. After freeing my car last week, we cleared the other side and salted it on Saturday. Don was finally able to park his car normally. As for yesterday’s snow clean-up, Don ended up shoveling the driveway and I shoveled the parking area. More salt was put down knowing that we had a big freeze coming last night. All is clear!

It will be very cold for the next three days and then it will gradually start to warm up. Next week, temperatures will be in the forties, which seems positively balmy.

I’ve seen robins for the past few days and I heard the call of mourning doves both yesterday and today. Spring is coming.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
