Simple Christmas

December 6, 2016 at 9:18 am by Claudia

My plans to work on The Comedy of Errors  yesterday were foiled by a spurt of cleaning and decorating energy. When that happens, I’ve learned that it pays to embrace the energy and go with it. First off, I made good on my vow to clean the bathroom, which, as you know, is one of my least favorite things to do. Done.

Then, though I normally don’t do any decorating until mid-December, I kept thinking about putting up our little tree. No matter what I did, that idea kept resurfacing. After a while, I realized that it was because I am leaving for Hartford soon and won’t be in my Christmas-decorated cottage during the week before Christmas. In essence, I am losing a week at home during the holidays. Make that two weeks, as I’ll also be gone for the week between Christmas and the New Year. (Never fear, I’ll be home for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.)

Because of all that and, I think, because we’re really starting to crave it, we want to keep things simple. No big tree for the second year in a row. Just the funky little white tree that I got at Michael’s many years ago.

I stood in the living room and boom! I realized that we have the bistro table now. What about putting the tree on our beautiful table instead of its usual place on the industrial stool by the chimney? A quick text to Don (he was in the city yesterday) and his enthusiastic “Yes!” got me going. I dragged the tree from the closet under the stairs, cleared the bistro table, and went to work. The tree was put together, lights were strung and I went with a new idea for the tree skirt, rather than the pretty little pastel-y print skirt I already had: a remnant of vintage bark cloth from my stash.

I put Pandora on, brought my mini Bose speaker downstairs and played Christmas music while I played with the bark cloth.

I wanted a splash of color and I got it. I really, really love it.

Instead of using the minuscule little pink ornaments I’ve used in other years, I decided to dig our smaller Shiny Brites out of their storage bin in the shed because, darn it, I missed them! That lead me to the Christmas wreath I also store in the shed. It’s now on the front door.

Back to the tree:

There it is mid-afternoon yesterday. I’m in love. Doesn’t it look great on the table? I added the Cardinal Snow Globe because, really, what could be more perfect?

Then I grabbed the outdoor lights and looped them between the posts on the porch, as we do every year. Then I cleaned like a madwoman. I wanted to surprise Don because he would be coming home after dark and I wanted him to see the lights on the porch as he pulled into the driveway and the lights on the little tree sparkling in the window.

It worked. He was surprised and delighted, if I do say so myself.

More and more, we seem to be on the path to simplifying Christmas and all the decorations and hoopla. Now, if we had grandchildren, we might be inclined to do more. But maybe not. I’ve never been a blogger who wants to decorate the house the day after Thanksgiving so I can do the House Tour thing. I like looking at those tours (a wee bit), but truly, the holiday for us is about quiet joy and as little stress as possible.

This idea of simplifying Christmas started a few years back when Don was working in San Diego and couldn’t be home for Christmas. I didn’t want to wrestle with a big tree, so I decided to only use the small tree. That, and the outside lights, and I was done.

It was liberating.

That put the thought in my head. Don already had it – he’s all for making it simple.

I am increasingly okay with not having a big tree, especially since I added the Shiny Brites to the mix this year.

This is all I need. The tree, a wreath on the door, and shiny white lights on the porch.

Oh, and Don, of course.

Happy Tuesday.

Wee Decorations and Nancy Drew

November 29, 2016 at 9:14 am by Claudia

Two nights in a row of less than ideal sleep means that I haven’t started my text research for The Comedy of Errors  yet, but I have plenty of time. Hopefully, tomorrow or Thursday.

I did run some errands yesterday and added a few holiday touches to the dollhouse(s).

I found these tiny little bottlebrush trees at Michael’s. I ran the idea by Caroline and she gave it a thumbs up.

I now have four of these Petite Princess chests – two were purchased by me, and two were gifts. I love them.

In hopes of pleasing the resident of the Loft (whose name has yet to be determined) I added a little tree to the coffee table.

The bowl of Christmas candies was a part of this month’s SquintBox.

And then I decorated the somewhat hideous door to the Loft, with another Michael’s find:

The door is very wide and made of plastic and I do not like it. I’m thinking of changing it out with something else – maybe french doors, or some sort of two door-combination. But for now…it’s decorated for the holidays.

If you read yesterday’s comments, you know that I was determined to find those Shiny Brites, so yet again, I dragged out all my boxes and searched for that tiny little box. I’m happy to say I found it.

They were nestled in a box that also held some wrapped packages, so the amount of presents under the tree has increased.

I found the star, but it’s a bit wobbly up there at the top of the tree. It will do. I need to make a little tree skirt of some kind – the simpler the better – and then Caroline should be all set for Christmas.

I have absolutely no desire as of yet to decorate my own house, but I sure love decorating my wee little houses. As Brae said in yesterday’s comments, it’s so much easier!

In the mail yesterday:

11-29-whisperingstatue2

Another Nancy Drew with a dust jacket illustration by Russell H. Tandy. I had to take a picture of it on the French bistro table in the late afternoon sun. I can’t help it, it’s my favorite ‘staging’ surface.

11-29-whisperingstatue

This book is in excellent condition! Hardly any wear at all. The Whispering Statue  is #14 in the series. Tandy illustrated the first 22 books in the series in this format, with the script “Nancy Drew Mystery Stories” in gold at the top and a white spine. He also did the covers for 4 additional books in the series in what are called wrap-style dust jackets, where the picture wrapped over onto the spine.

I have another one on the way, which will bring my collection to 9 books. That means I have 17 to go!

It’s a rainy day today. Sigh. I know we need the rain, but there have been a lot of gray days lately.

Happy Tuesday.

Mini-Decorating

November 28, 2016 at 9:19 am by Claudia

I had a little surge of mini-energy yesterday. Still in my flannel pajamas, I remembered some scrapbook/wallpaper that Barbara had sent my way, and then I thought about the Loft and suddenly, I was playing dollhouse.

11-28-minieclectic

There wasn’t enough paper to cover the entire wall, so I concentrated on the living area.

The sofa was made by Gabrielle of InTheTwelfthScale (Australia), the chair was made by AlicesMiniatures (England). The chest, lamp, and bowl of beads are Petite Princess (a gift from Denise). The pottery, acrylic table, rug and wallpaper were gifts from Barbara.

11-28-minieclecticplant

I made the plant from some pieces I had in my stash. The base is one of the plastic containers that held a piece of the mini Roseville Pottery. I filled it with the some of the medium ballast I used for the roof garden on Hummingbird Cottage. The gold statue is from the Petite Princess line, courtesy of Denise.

The loft is fun, but tricky to realistically configure. I got rid of the kitchen pieces that came with it because the scale was bigger than the furniture I wanted to use and it was plastic. Eventually, I’d like to get some sleek cupboards and appliances that would line up on the far wall, making the downstairs an open living/cooking/eating space.

Upstairs, in the tiny, tiny loft, I think I’ll go for a modern, low-to-the-ground bed.

Scurrying around, looking through my stash, looking for things in the drawers in my little storage cabinet, pulling out bigger storage bins from the now-sorted craft closet – it was just how I had envisioned things when I started to organize this office/studio.

And because I had done all that sorting and purging on Thanksgiving day, I knew where the Christmas Tree was. I made it a couple of years ago, but didn’t use it last year – it was just after my dad died.

11-28-treedenmini

I suppose I could have put it in the Loft, but I made it for Hummingbird Cottage and there it should stay. Besides, Caroline would have a fit if I used it elsewhere. She, unlike me, likes to decorate right after Thanksgiving.

The wrapping paper and bows were a gift from Judy, the presents were part of this month’s SquintBox (made by DogMa creations), the garlands on the tree were part of a gift from a reader and I’m darned if I can remember her name! I’m so sorry! If it was you, please let me know so I can give you credit!

11-28-minitreecloseup

There’s a post – After the Glue Dries: A Mini Christmas Tree – about the construction of this tree and the amount of glue that stuck to my fingers while making it. If you’re interested in making one yourself, you need a bottle brush tree for the base and a product called lycopodium, which you can get online.

Now that I look at that post, I see a picture of my mini Shiny Brites and have no idea where they are. I guess you know what I’ll be doing today.

11-28-presentswrappingpaper

I have to make a tree topper of some kind.

11-28-den

I stored the tree very carefully in a box that was sealed and I’m thrilled that it held up beautifully!

11-28-minilivingroomwreath

So far, the living room simply sports a wreath hanging from the newel post. I may add a garland to the fireplace.

Of course, I have no interest in decorating my life-sized cottage at the moment. We’ll do something during the second week of December, but I think it will be pretty minimal this year, as I’ll be in Hartford most of the holiday season with a couple of days off for Christmas and the New Year.

I haven’t felt very mini-inspired lately, so this was a nice change.

Now, where are those Shiny Brites?

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
