A Corner of the Cottage

April 6, 2014 at 8:10 am by Claudia

kitchencorner1

This Sunday morning finds us exploring another corner of the cottage – this time in the kitchen. By the way, it was photographed As Is – no staging.

This kitchen has a lot of windows; two to the left of this cabinet and one to the right, along with two over the sink. That is one of the reasons we fell in love with this house but also presents a challenge in terms of available wall space, which leads us to:

What’s that piece of furniture? This kitchen cabinet was found when we were renting a very small cottage in Westchester County. The kitchen in that cottage had very little storage space, so when we found this piece we realized it would be the perfect fit. When we were considering whether to buy this house, I measured this wall to make sure the cabinet would fit. It did. It had fifties era stainless steel hardware on the doors (the exact design that we had on the kitchen cupboards in my childhood home) which I replaced with glass pulls. The backing behind the shelves is beadboard.

What else? Also in view is a wood crate with the word Moxie on its side that holds Scout’s distilled water (it’s on my shopping list today), a vintage step stool, Scout’s water dish, and part of the red bench.

What’s on/in it? On top: two Fiesta mixing bowls in yellow and green, a Fiesta green gravy boat, a metal mesh cloche over a vintage china pitcher, some sheep salt and pepper shakers, a fisherman that Don thinks looks like him and an old ice cream maker filled with dried hydrangea. Also, a hook that holds my gardening hat.

Inside: Lots of pottery and china, which is one of my favorite things to collect. Top shelf: Some Emma Bridgewater pottery, a Fiesta teapot, a Rose Chintz platter, some aqua McCoy, and pink depression glass salt and pepper shakers. Middle shelf: My favorite Red Wing pottery vase, a piece of Roseville Pottery, some brown transferware, a McCoy vase, two teacups from my favorite set of Edwin Knowles china, a hand-painted  plate from France, and three more pieces of McCoy. Bottom shelf: several pieces of yellow McCoy, a Homer Laughlin Harlequin pitcher filled with bakelite flatware, another Fiesta teapot in yellow, stacks of the Edwin Knowles china and a little teapot given to me by my friend Lynne.

Inside the lower doors: miscellaneous china, cleaners, dog brushes and dog nail clippers, dusters, swiffers, and a vase or two.

What’s on the wall? A black metal piece in the shape of a dog bone with two hooks that hold Scout’s leashes, Riley’s purple leash, Scout’s old collar, and several baseball caps.

Any challenges? Trying to squeeze a lot into a small space and not have it look overdone or too cluttery is a constant challenge in this little cottage. The windows are always a challenge. Scout’s water dish is a challenge, but this is the best place for it. (I’ve accidentally kicked it numerous times, resulting in some curse words and lots of paper towels being put to use.)

There you are – part two of my little series. Hope you’re enjoying it!

Happy Sunday.

Springifying the Dollhouse

April 3, 2014 at 7:20 am by Claudia

Well, we had a mix up at the mechanics yesterday morning and the parts hadn’t arrived yet. So I came back home and I’ll be going back there early this morning.

When I got home I decided to do some work on the dollhouse. Whenever I feel stressed, I find it really helps to concentrate on something creative. It’s my very own crafty version of “Calgon, take me away!” Since Spring is here and I can’t do anything with my garden yet (May 1st is the magic date here in the Northeast) I thought I’d springify (my new word) Hummingbird Cottage.

How about some flowers in the window boxes?

And on to another little dollhouse project. Remember that I told you I had plans for the tower at the top of the house? Don came up with the initial idea. He’s awfully creative, that guy. Well, today I started on it. That room is going to be a potting shed of sorts. And I’m going to eventually have a little rooftop garden.

But first, the beginning of the potting shed.

pottingroom1

I started out painting the walls a pale aqua. But it didn’t turn out as pale as I wanted it to. So I wiped some of it off and the uneven surface on the walls brought out an interesting texture. Then I thought about this being some attic room at one point that the owner had turned into a potting shed, so I aged the walls a bit.

Then, after considering floor possibilities and not being in the mood to cut sticks and paint them individually, I decided to paint some left over beadboard a vivid red. It was sort of a ‘what the heck’ moment.

And I find I like it!

The sink was the top part of a bathroom sink unit that was out of scale for the dollhouse. It was too tall. So I took it apart and just used the sink. Then I attached some legs. I removed one of the faucets and, you can sort of see it here, attached it to the outside wall. I’m going to figure out how to make a hose.

By the way, the cherub artifact on the wall should NOT have a red nose. I have to sand that red paint off. I think it got there when I was painting the floor.

Unless the cherub is a clown cherub…

Eventually, I’m going to add some pots and a bench and some tools (rakes, trowels, etc.) I ordered a few things today from a supplier and I’m excited about adding them to the room. Maybe some hooks to hang the tools from?

I’m excited about this new space.

Hummingbird Cottage has a potting shed!

Where is Mockingbird Hill Cottage’s potting shed?

Happy Thursday.

A Corner of the Cottage

March 29, 2014 at 9:06 am by Claudia

Of course, not every corner is worth highlighting, but I’m starting a little series that will aim a spotlight on a smaller areas and niches in the cottage. Who knows? It may end up being a very short series! Here goes.

corners-den

First up: this little corner in the den.

What’s that piece of furniture? The cherry spinet desk was a local find. It used to be by the stairs and my little white freebie-street-find desk was in here. They’ve recently changed places. Because this corner has a lot going on already, we decided to close the desk up and use it as a table.

What’s on/in it? A hand-painted tole letter holder (it holds bills that need to be paid,) a vintage cigarette box that I got in Edinburgh, a framed print that I’m using as a tray and which holds my lenses and a stack of already made felt critters, a pot of impatiens that will eventually return to its original home on the porch, a bird nest I found on the property that is under a glass dome.

What’s on the wall? The Lost Lamb print in a beautiful vintage frame that I purchased from my blogging friend, Debra, is at the top. Underneath it is a vintage shadow-box type shelf that had a dark finish and mirrored back. I painted it and covered the mirror with scrapbook paper and now it holds my miniature pottery collection.

corners-den-basket

What else? On the floor is a stack of vintage books, books that we have read and truly love. Next to the books is a vintage wicker piece that could hold logs or magazines or a host of other things. Here at the cottage it holds some reading material and my tin of hand quilting supplies.

Any challenges? Yes. This little space is nestled between a window and a closet. So whatever we put there has to be able to exist in that space and also be fairly easy to move. The window cannot be blocked because it is the home of a window air conditioner in the summer months.

And there you are. I hope you like this little series!

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
