Do Our Decorating Styles Skip a Generation?

October 11, 2012 at 8:58 am by Claudia

I have this theory.

I may be wrong; I often am. But I wonder….do our decorating styles skip a generation?

Let me try to explain; and I can only refer to my particular style, of course.

I grew up in a house full of modern furniture. It was full of Danish Modern or Modern – what is now called Mid-Century Modern. I don’t know if I had any intense reactions to it at the time, it was just there. But I knew, even then, I would never decorate that way. And when I see the Mid-Century Modern craze, though I can admire rooms decorated that way, I know I wouldn’t touch it with a ten-foot pole. Been there, done that. I have a friend, about 20 years younger than me, whose home is decorated in that style. She didn’t grow up with it, I suspect.

My mom, on the other hand, grew up with my grandmother’s style, which was not in any way, shape, or form, modern. It was closer to traditional with a wicker rocker or two, touches of cottage and lots of china displayed in china cabinets.

Do you see where I’m going here?

Do we skip a generation in our decorating tastes? Do we want something other than what we grew up with?

Mom wanted anything but her mother’s style.

So did I.

I hearken back to grandma’s style of decorating, except I am much more casual. My grandmother’s home, though cheery and welcoming, was neat as a pin, nothing out of place. Everything was arranged.

And I don’t really go for Traditional. If I had some of grandma’s dark mahogany furniture, I would paint it. (Except for the piano.) She might not like that.

My mom’s home was full of a lot of beige. I don’t do beige. I do color. And that red chair below? I bought it because it reminded me of a chair in my grandmother’s den. But mine is more colorful. I decided last year that my style is Christmas in Connecticut, a reference to the cozy, overstuffed, slipcovered style of that movie.

The only room where there is a hint of beige, well, rather more than a hint, is the den. I bought this rug many years ago:

You can see it in this photo. It was from Pottery Barn and it had the red that I love and it worked in our little rental cottage. So when it came time to find an inexpensive slip cover for our much-too-old sofa, I went with this:

Beige. Or as I prefer to call it, Deep Ecru.

Believe me, I thought long and hard before I ordered it because I hate beige. The pops of red help, don’t you think? This color would never be in the den if I couldn’t  enhance it with color.

Likewise, you won’t see me decorating with Avocado Green. Or Harvest Gold. Remember those colors?

But the den is a little homage to my mom. With my style added. I sort of like that. But only in one room.

I suspect that if I had a daughter or son, they would be decorating in Mid-Century Modern – my mom’s style. Skipping a generation. They would probably run screaming from my cottagey, cozy, vintage, recycled, colorful look. Thanks but no thanks.

I don’t have human children, so I can’t test that theory.

What are your thoughts? How does your style relate to your mom’s or your grandmother’s? What about your children? My theory might be hogwash. Who knows? I’m fascinated by this stuff, so I’d love to hear. Let’s have a discussion!

Happy Thursday.

Topping it Off & Etsy

This is the top of the white hutch in my kitchen. (Gosh, it’s hard to take good photos of the tops of cabinets and hutches! It seems to be so dark up there – at least in my house.) I used to have a rather large Fiesta collection and on the left are 3 of the pieces that I saved when I sold it. The heart is from Monica. The sheep are salt and pepper shakers that my sister gave me. I have a vintage pitcher under that wire cloche. The little guy is a fishmonger from the days when we collected the Dickens Village pieces from Department 56. Don added him to the display because he thinks the fishmonger looks like him. And on the right is an old ice cream bucket filled with dried hydrangeas.

Once I had taken that photo, I started looking at the tops of my other cabinets.

This is my hutch in the den. The birdcage on the left is vintage Hendryx. I bought it at Vignettes in San Diego. And you can see some of my pieces of Roseville pottery. I love Roseville. Hidden behind the pottery are some vintage books, including my dad’s schoolbooks.

Then I traveled on to the top of my big old white cabinet in the living room:

The ceiling in the living room is low. More pottery, mostly McCoy – the piece on the left doesn’t have a maker’s mark.

What about the kitchen cabinets?

Fortunately, our kitchen ceiling is high and I can display my pottery. On the left are two Fiesta coffee pots. The other four pieces are McCoy. That chartreuse vase is one of my favorites – very clean lines and  sort of Art Deco/Moderne handles. On the other side of the kitchen you can see these:

More McCoy.

I like using the tops of hutches and cupboards and cabinets for display space. And, frankly, I need it. I have so much pottery around here that if I limited my displays to shelves and the inside of hutches, I’d be in a sorry state. Do you use that space to display things in your home?

Shop Update:

There are 2 more Obsession Scarves in the Etsy Shop – I just added them.

 Update: Sold out. Thank you!

Another former student of mine won an Emmy last night – Abraham Higginbotham (Writer and Executive Producer on Modern Family.) Yay, Abe!

Happy Monday.

Sort of a Chatty Post

September 21, 2012 at 8:47 am by Claudia

Is it time to take down that coffee filter wreath? I’m thinking it is.

I want a real stair runner for those stairs – something from, say, Dash & Albert. When Riley and Scout were still sleeping upstairs with us and Riley began to be a bit unsure about his footing, we hastily tacked down those mini carpets for the treads. I tried to make them colorful yet funky by alternating a red one with a blue one.

I’m sick of them.

And every year, I look at the walls in this house, which were given only one coat of paint when this house was flipped, and get the urge to paint all of it. There are lots of dings and cracks and paint marks from furniture being moved up the stairs. I just never show them to you. When fall comes around and I see the amount of moths and bugs coming into the house lessen (we live in the country), I think now’s the time.

Then I get overwhelmed. Because I will be the painter. And there are a lot of walls. And the kitchen cupboards need to be painted. Even the kitchen island needs to be touched up.

I hate painting walls.

Maybe if I just start in one little area and do a little bit each day?

Still overwhelmed.

The view out our car window as we drove into town the other day – the day we found my Featherweight. Don’t we have  pretty mountains?

So many of you are flannel pajamas lovers. That makes me smile. And yes, flannel nighties count as well. Someone mentioned flannel sheets, but the funny thing is though I love my flannel pajamas, wear them in the morning and in the evening and other times of the day, I don’t wear them to bed. I tend to run hot. And it’s not due to menopause, which is, thankfully, over. Flannel sheets make me hot. Flannel pajamas while sleeping would send me up the wall. Don, on the other hand, runs cold and always has piles of covers over him.

By the way, I’m trying to reply to any questions that you’ve asked in your comments – right there under your comment. Since I have threaded comments now, it’s so much easier to do that. So, if you ask a question, check back. Maybe we can eventually get a dialogue going and I will respond to more than just questions. I see that on other blogs and I like the back-and-forth. I’ve not found a plug-in that I like that will allow subscribing to comments, so for the time being, if you are so inclined, check back.

Speaking of plug-ins, Brenda and I found one that will show the latest blog posts on our blogrolls (like Blogger has.) I like it so much more because I often read your blogs that way. It shows the post title and the amount of time that has elapsed since the blog was updated. The only problem? All Typepad blogs show that update as ’42 years ago.’ I’m not kidding. I don’t know why. It makes me laugh. So if you have a Typepad blog and you’re on my blogroll, my apologies.

Our elusive male cardinal made an appearance and I ran for my camera. I would have been able to get an even better picture had Miss Scout not decided to start barking at that moment. I love our cardinals.

Okay. That’s all for now. Stay tuned. I will post A Favorite Thing tonight at 8:00 pm EST.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
