A Painting Binge

February 12, 2013 at 8:54 am by Claudia

I’ve been on a painting binge.

I am not someone who particularly likes to paint. I’m an impatient painter. (That may be why I haven’t painted any of the walls downstairs. I know it will be a big undertaking.) Spurred on by my wish to brighten up and pull together our bedroom and the knowledge that Don will be home next Monday and I’d like to get everything cleaned up by then, I’ve been painting like crazy.

My dresser. Long story short: I found it on the street in Cambridge well over 20 years ago. I enlisted the help of a friend and we carried it 4 city blocks to my apartment building. Then up 4 flights of stairs. It had the same sort of dark stained wood that the kitchen island had when I first brought it home. I painted it gray. Somewhere along the way during our time in San Diego, I painted it yellow and added green knobs.

I was tempted to keep it this cheery color but after many years, the paint was cracked and the yellow, which is brighter than this photo indicates, just didn’t go with the newish color scheme. I love this piece. The drawers stick, they don’t quite close, but who cares? The details are charming. And it was free.

Here it is, newly painted:

The aqua is the same shade that we used in our downstairs bathroom. Antigua Aqua latex in an eggshell finish by Benjamin Moore. The drawers are painted in the same color chalk paint, Old White, that I’ve been using on the other pieces.

I switched out the knobs.

I love the legs.

I have two of these McCoy bowls. One is downstairs. The bird’s tail needs to be reglued. It keeps falling off.

Years ago, I bought this hook at Anthropologie. I have a C, as well. I can’t find the C, so D for Don has become my necklace holder.

The dresser is right next to the piece I repainted last week – the one that holds our big old television. Right around the corner from that piece are some of my eggcups.

It all started with this French Cherub painting I bought four years ago from my favorite shop in the world, Vignettes. It became my color inspiration.

You can see that we have a true attic bedroom – sharply sloped ceilings, smallish windows. It presents a big decorating challenge.

There’s more. I’ve painted our bedside tables. I’m contemplating what the heck to do with Don’s dresser. A photo will be forthcoming with a request for your suggestions. All of that will be tomorrow. The finishing touch will be off in the not-very-distant future when I finish our quilt.

I’d get rid of the Berber carpeting if I could but Don likes carpet in the bedroom. Since I make most of the decorating decisions, I figure he deserves to have carpet.

I’m also repainting the cabinet in the studio.

Then I’m done. Except for Don’s dresser.

Tune in tomorrow for more.

Happy Tuesday.

Improvements to the Bedroom and the Dollhouse

February 7, 2013 at 8:24 am by Claudia

The painting continues. I have this small buffet from the forties that I use in the bedroom – I store a lot of my sweaters inside the cabinet doors. Old house = very little closet space. It’s in the same darkly stained wood that the kitchen island was when it first arrived. The difference being that I painted the kitchen island long ago. But this little bugger was still in it’s badly damaged, missing veneer, yucky state. As it sits directly across from the bed, I would look at it every night as I sat in bed reading and get depressed. Here’s a glimpse of the way it looked:

before

And this photo somehow makes it look better than it was.

This time I primed first. It still took 2 coats – 3 in some places. Again – Chalk Paint is just okay. I have a gallon of the paint I used on the kitchen island that has been sitting around here a long time. I’ve used it for other projects. I repaint the island with it every year. I still have more than half a gallon left. It cost less than a quart of Chalk Paint.

But I have the can of Chalk Paint. So I’m going to use it.

The painted version. I love the lighter look. That dark piece of furniture just sucked the energy out of the room. Oh, it looks so much better – but in the interest of being totally upfront with you, I must also show you what is on top of this piece.

repaint2

Our huge, black monolith of a television that we’ve had for, what, about 16 years?

It still works.

So I can’t justify getting rid of it and buying a new one. We don’t watch all that much television in the bedroom – usually only when one of us is sick in bed. But there it is. I have put the framed “Visiting Santa” photos in front of the crazy cable cords until I find a way to hide them.

Now, on to Don’s bedside table, which is really an old oak music cabinet. And his dresser? Talk about missing pieces of veneer! I don’t think every piece will be this color, but they will all be painted. I want this room to look a lot more coordinated.

On to another topic. In the miniature world, there is a well known miniaturist in Paris, Léa Frisoni. Léa constructs the most amazing miniatures and has a shop as well. She has written a book, Le Grand Livre de La Maison Miniature, that I very much want to buy someday. In it she gives instructions on how to create the gorgeous pieces and houses that she is known for. (I almost bought it through Léa’s Etsy Shop, but it’s a big book and the shipping costs were very high.) Someday. Léa blogs at Un Jour à la Campagne (A Day in the Country).

When my dream trip to Paris happens sometime in the future, I will be visiting Léa’s shop, of that you may be sure.

In the meantime, I wanted to have a little creation of Léa’s in my dollhouse. It arrived yesterday.

lea1

Long, long ago, I had a French pen pal. She sent me a gift and it was in a paper bag like this. I remember thinking that even paper bags from Paris seemed more chic than our paper bags. And they still are.

Can you spot the new addition to my kitchen?

lea2

If you guessed the tray, you’re right! It reminds me of the tole trays that I love so much. Yay! I have a little bit of Léa in my house!

How come my dollhouse looks so much better than my real house?

Okay. Have to go. I have to run lots of errands today because we are getting a mega snow storm tomorrow.

Crap.

Depending on what station I listen to, the amount of snow coming for my area seems to be anywhere from 6 inches to over a foot. The Weather Channel is practically frothing at the mouth, they are so excited. I’m sticking to my little local cable news channel where the weatherman actually seems to be exercising some caution in the area of predictions. He’s not hyping everything. A rarity nowadays. In the meantime, I’m trying to take care of things before the snow arrives.

Update: I deleted the earlier part of the post saying Dad was doing well. He’s not doing so well today. He seems to be in some pain and his lung is bothering him. We’re not sure what’s going on right now. I’ll keep you updated.

Happy Thursday.

Chalk Paint? Not So Much.

February 4, 2013 at 9:42 am by Claudia

chalkpaint

I know everyone in blogland is on the Chalk Paint Bandwagon. I’ve read countless posts on how wonderful it is. And I’ve seen beautiful results. But so far….I’m not a fan.

I have a few pieces in our bedroom that are wood. For the most part, the wood is dark. This piece is from our Craftsman days in San Diego when the trim in our house was a darkly stained wood and so many of our pieces of furniture were, too. I’ve been wanting to paint the various pieces in some sort of cohesive color and, hopefully, brighten up the bedroom in the process.

You can see the dark finish this piece had originally if you look at the top of the blanket chest.

One of the selling points of Chalk Paint is that it goes a long way. The instructions always point out that you don’t need to use a primer. And one (or two) coats of paint is enough to cover the piece. I had to use 4 coats of paint. Believe me, if I had known, I would have primed the piece first. At $36.95 for a small can of paint, 4 coats of paint is pricey.

I was frustrated.  A small project that I thought would take a short amount of time took much longer than expected. I’m still not entirely happy with it.

I don’t get what the big deal is about Chalk Paint. Has it been overhyped? It’s awfully expensive. If I thought it was worth the effort, I’d rather make my own. There are plenty of recipes for it on the internet. But is it worth the effort?

And I wonder – why not just use regular old paint like I normally do? Why go to all the expense of chalk paint if I can use flat latex and some wax and come up with this?

tvcabinet

It isn’t a great photo, but this is a $5 cabinet that I painted and aged and waxed. For the price of some latex paint and some paste wax (which I still have) this ends up being much more affordable.

I don’t know about you, but if I’m spending $36.95 on a quart of paint, it had better be fabulous.

So far? Not fabulous.

I know that some of my readers use chalk paint and love it, so maybe I’m missing something? Or doing something wrong? If I am, please let me know! I’ll be happy to adjust my current attitude.

By the way, has anyone else received a Malware warning while on PicMonkey? This morning I was editing a photo and was about to save it to my computer when I got a big old Malware warning (I was on Chrome.) I quickly closed that window and ended up editing in Ribbet. I wonder sometimes if these warnings are real or are the result of an overactive and extra vigilant browser. So now I’m running my virus software to make sure everything is okay. Edited to add: Saw this explanation today. PicMonkey and other sites must have been advertising partners with this site. All is okay now.

And my wireless router appears to be acting up.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
