Mad About Minis

December 7, 2013 at 8:47 am by Claudia

foggy snowy morning

You’ll be happy to know that upon rising, I immediately grasped the fact that today is Saturday. Looks like I’m back on track. We had predictions for lots more snow than this rather paltry amount. I was actually a little disappointed. Scout loves to play in the snow and I was in the mood for a snowy landscape.

We don’t even have to shovel.

It’s a lovely foggy morning here. The candles are lit, husband is reading in his chair, I’m in my blogging chair in the den, and Scout is shuttling back and forth between us. We’re drinking Peet’s French Roast; mine with half and half, Don’s black. I’m just starting to get the urge to decorate, but I can stem that tide until next week. There’s plenty of time for the house to be decorated for the holidays. My dad and I were talking about that the other day. When I mentioned decorating for Christmas, he immediately said, “You don’t want to do it too soon. You’ll get tired of it.” Bingo.

Dad gave away most of his decorations this year. It’s too much work for him and since Mom is in the nursing home and not at home with him it just makes him sad. He only displays a decoration or two, mostly for the cats to play with.

I painted the bright brassy andirons a metallic black. I like them better this way. And I added some birch logs. Very hard to get a good photo yesterday as it was gray and rainy all day long.

And I added this mirror to the entry. One of my readers sent me this a long time ago, specifically for the dollhouse. I was thinking of using it in the bathroom, but I like it better here. The owner of Hummingbird Cottage likes to check her appearance before heading out the door. (Don’t we all?)

Wouldn’t some mini paperwhites look good on that dresser?

I am so sorry but I can’t remember the name of the wonderful person who sent this to me. I’m thinking it’s Linda, but I’m not sure. If you’re out there and you see this post, can you leave a comment? I want to thank you properly!

I was all set to start in on the craft room/office but I wasn’t feeling inspired. I’m not sure exactly what I want to do with the walls. I have an idea which keeps calling to me and I think I’ll give it a go today. I also need to add some more molding to the top of the walls in the living room and bathroom.

I could spend hours, and have, looking at miniature blogs and the dollhouse mini listings on Etsy. Oh my goodness, what a treasure trove for the senses! After I’ve finished putting together the basics in the dollhouse; wallpaper, moldings, trim and furniture, then I get to add all the little touches that will make Hummingbird Cottage look lived in. Books, dishes, pots, towels, rugs, more books, lamps, and I don’t know what all else. I did find some little treasures from two sellers on Etsy. One lives in Spain, the other lives in Australia. I’m crossing my fingers that the little package from Spain will arrive any day now. I just ordered from the seller in Australia, so I don’t expect it to arrive before Christmas. Eeeek! I can’t wait to see what’s inside. Oh, and I ordered one kitchen accessory that should be arriving any day now. None of these ‘littles’ cost more than a few dollars.

Honestly, if you gave me a new credit card (which I need like a hole in the head) I could go nuts in the dollhouse miniature section on Etsy.

This hobby is addictive.

Yesterday I asked Don if it was wrong to love my dollhouse so much.

He immediately answered no. (Smart man.)

Happy Saturday.

More Chatty Claudia on a Friday

December 6, 2013 at 9:40 am by Claudia

Well, I’ve obviously entered some other time/space dimension.

Yesterday I was absolutely sure it was Wednesday. All day long. I’m not talking about those days where you think for a minute that it’s another day but then almost immediately you realize it isn’t. No. I knew it was Wednesday and it wasn’t open to question because it was as clear to me as the fact that it was raining outside.

Then I watched the evening news with Brian Williams. He signed off with “this is the news for this Thursday…” or something to that effect and I thought, “Oh poor Brian, he said the wrong day. Even Brian makes mistakes.” I looked at the calendar on my laptop. The current day was highlighted, and it was Thursday. Still not believing it, I shouted out to Don, “What day is this?” He responded with “Thursday.” “Are you sure??” “Yes.”

What????

I’ve officially lost my mind.

Even this morning, I thought for a moment it was Thursday. But it’s Friday.

Perhaps I was abducted by aliens and lost a day.

On to more news.

While out in the dreaded overly-full shed the other day, I rediscovered this:

vintagestepstool

We bought this vintage step stool a long time ago when we were living in San Diego. Somehow it ended up out in the shed when we moved here to the cottage. Why? Who knows.

But given the fact that I’m constantly dragging the laboratory stool that lives in the living room into the kitchen to change a light bulb or climb up onto the counter for some reason or another, doesn’t it make sense that this little baby should take up official residence in the cottage? It’s a wee bit rusty. I went at it with some steel wool which helped a great deal, but it needs a more thorough clean-up when I have the time.

It so reminds me of my childhood. The vinyl is right out of post-war suburbia. I love it. Welcome, little yellow vinyl vintagey stool.

dhtub

Heidi gave me this bathtub a while back. It was part of some dollhouse furniture she acquired at auction. It had the syrupy flower decals on the sides, so I tossed it aside thinking I would never use it. But then I thought that it just might do until I found something else.

The flowers had to go. So I bought some craft paint meant for ceramics and painted it. Lord, did that paint stink! Eventually I put it outside on the porch to finish drying.

I forgot about it and left it out there for 3 days. The elements had their way with the paint and you can see some crackling on the inside of the tub. I rather like it. I’ve decided it will do for the time being. The owner of Hummingbird Cottage likes the old look of the bathtub and, since we all know she loves vintage, this aged effect makes her smile.

scootina

This morning, Don got up before me. That in itself is shocking. I got up about 15 minutes later. Scout, who is still not used to her dad rising at the same time as her mom, much less earlier, was at a loss as to what to do. She was on the sofa in the living room with her dad. Five minutes later, she came down to the den with me. Five minutes later, she went back up to the living room. Five minutes later she came back down to the den. Five minutes later, she was back in the living room. And then, back in the den. We were howling with laughter.

Poor girl, she’s exhausted.

Two more things. We watched the live version of The Sound of Music last night, though I didn’t want to watch it because I thought the casting was less than inspired. I still do. But I’m glad we watched it. It’s a rather daring choice nowadays: airing a Broadway musical live. No chance to re-record. No retakes. None of that; simply live and broadcast to millions. It’s a brave thing to do. I grew up watching live television and it really doesn’t happen anymore, especially on this scope. I thought it was executed beautifully. I was an actress for many years and I cut my teeth on Musical Theater. I can’t even begin to count the musicals I have done. Musicals remain my first love, especially musicals written with smart lyrics and beautiful melodies that do what they should do; tell the story in a heightened way. I’m not a fan of Pop Musicals where every song sounds like something else you’ve heard before and one melody could easily blend right into another into another. Nor am I a fan of Juke Box Musicals. But gorgeous melodies, witty and moving lyrics, especially by the great Rodgers and Hammerstein? Count me in.

(Side note: Kurt was played by Joe West, son of my former student from Boston University, Maura West. He was really, really good. Yay, Joe! Maura and her husband are both actors and met while working on As the World Turns.)

I hope this is the start of more live broadcasts. The American Musical is a true treasure and it needs to be honored and introduced to a whole new generation.

And finally, rest in peace Nelson Mandela. You were a truly great man. Maybe the only truly great man in my lifetime. You changed the world and we are all better for it.

Happy Friday.

Miss Efficiency

December 5, 2013 at 9:32 am by Claudia

Cue the trumpets.

I cleaned off the front porch.

I packed away the cushions, the cot, the garden paraphernalia, the vintage garden sign. Only the pots of impatiens, still holding court inside the house, haven’t been stowed away in the shed. I also cleaned up the chicken wire fence garden and all the dead plants on the funky patio.

Not only that, since I was in and out of the shed, I grabbed the wreath and hung it on the door.

Not only that, I draped the outdoor lights along the front porch railing. And turned them on.

Don’t get too excited. That is the extent of my holiday decorating so far. Remember: No Christmas decorating until next week. Though, when I did a little update about said lights and wreath on MHC’s Facebook page, Melanie commented: “Aren’t lights and a wreath Christmas decorating?”

Well, technically, yes. So I’ve amended my rule to No Indoor Christmas Decorating until the second week of December.

Do you find you get more done when there are no distractions – in my case – my husband? Don had to go into Manhattan yesterday and I suddenly became Miss Efficiency. I got a lot of things done.

Case in point: I was sitting in the blogging chair, which gives a direct view of the side of the dollhouse and, unfortunately, of the mess on top of the dollhouse. That’s where all my scraps of wood, glue, paint, etc. are. When I am painting or cutting wood, I often work on the top of the kitchen island. So I find myself walking back and forth between the dollhouse and the island because I need something or other that I forgot to bring with me to the island.

Then I saw my Vernor’s soda crate on the kitchen table. Ding! An idea.

Next thing I knew, I was on my way to a favorite local antique center and I found this:

wed1

A nifty soda crate with dividers. I see Pepsi and Coca-Cola crates everywhere, so I didn’t want one. Since I’ve never heard of A-Treat, this crate went home with me. But now I’ll have to research this brand because I’m curious.

These soda crates have handles on the sides, so I can carry this with me from room to room.

wed2

This goes under the heading of Why didn’t I think of this sooner?

wed3

Glue, pencils, ruler, paints, craft sticks, shutters, trim…..all in one place.

wed5

And then stashed under the dollhouse table. Perfect.

Such a little thing, but such a time saver. And when the dollhouse is finished, I can use the crate for something else. I love these soda crates, by the way. I’m still looking for an aqua colored crate. I’ve seen them here and there in blogland.

I just have to share one more thing with you. I saw the most beautiful cabinet in that same antique shop. I almost hyperventilated. I took a photo with my iPhone but it doesn’t do it justice. (Notice the big Coca-Cola crate on top?)

wedcabinet

Oh. My. Goodness.

It’s quite tall, about 2 ½ feet wide (maybe more) and it has beautiful legs which I obviously didn’t capture in this photo. That’s a big antique porcelain doorknob. (Why the heck didn’t I move that sled to take this picture?)

Doesn’t this cabinet scream Claudia?? Unfortunately, the price tag said $290. Sob. It’s worth every penny, in my humble opinion. Very seldom do I see something that stops me in my tracks but this piece did. I don’t know where I’d put it. I don’t care. I would find a place for it.

Ah well. Sob, again.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
