Mockingbird…Hummingbird

December 5, 2011 at 10:14 am by Claudia

Work on the dollhouse has slowed a bit lately. It’s hard to keep those construction crews working when other things need to be done. They tell me they need more wallpaper and trim for the bathroom and studio. They have to tile the bathroom floor. Blah, blah, blah. There’s always something.

The dollhouse finally has a street address. 21 is my favorite, maybe even lucky, number. It’s my birthdate.  The urns arrived a few weeks ago. My plan is to age them a bit with some paint. I’m not crazy about this color. They will be filled with something festive for the holidays.

A long time ago I wrote a post about the dollhouse and asked everyone to suggest a name for this sweet cottage. One name stuck with me: Hummingbird Cottage. I’m sorry to say that I cannot remember who suggested it – if you did, let me know. Drum roll…..I dub thee, “Hummingbird Cottage.”

There. It’s official.

I’d say the street name is Mockingbird Lane, but wasn’t that the street the Munsters or Addams Family lived on?  I’ll have to google that.

Don, poor guy, worked until midnight last night, got up early today to start jury duty, will come home, change clothes and work until late tonight. Let’s hope he doesn’t have to serve on a jury. A day or two of this schedule is hard enough, but a whole week?

Be sure to come back tomorrow, when Brenda and I tackle the challenge of finding storage in a small kitchen.

Googled it. The Munsters lived at 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

Cooking on Thanksgiving

November 24, 2011 at 9:06 am by Claudia

I’ll be spending a lot of time at the stove today. Or rather, my new Aga cooker. Yes, I know I’ve mentioned how times are tough for us – that I’m frugal by necessity. But Don surprised me with a new Aga for my birthday!

You know where this is going.

It’s for the dollhouse. I’m thrilled because I have had one of these bookmarked on this computer for about 3 years. (Photos are a bit grainy because it’s early morning here and shooting into the dollhouse kitchen is like photographing a tunnel.)

I baked a cake.

I’ve always loved British decorating magazines with cozy, low-ceilinged kitchens complete with an Aga. Now I can say I own one.

But back to the true meaning of today. I wish for you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving. I could list all the negatives in my life at the moment, but I’m not going to. Gratitude and thankfulness is the order of the day. I have much to be thankful for and I truly am aware of my blessings every day.

I am very thankful for all of you.

Eat lots of food, take a nap, take a walk – enjoy.

The Dollhouse Bedroom and a Visit to Patti’s Dollhouse

November 11, 2011 at 7:00 am by Claudia

I finished most of the bedroom the other day. I added baseboards and window trim and a chair rail. I still have to trim out the area by the stairs and add crown molding, but here it is.

Remember the clapboard section that the previous owner had somehow inserted into the bedroom wall?  If you look to the left, you’ll see that brick is now covering up that clapboard. Several blogging friends told me about a method to make bricks, but I had already ordered this molded plastic and it ended up working beautifully. I painted it white.

It really feels like an attic room that has been converted to a bedroom – which is exactly what I was going for.

My friend Patti, of Crystal Rose Cottage has often mentioned a dollhouse that she made many years ago. These posts of mine have started her thinking about it again. Today, she posted photos of her unbelievably charming dollhouse and she has given me permission to share them with you.

Oh my. Isn’t it adorable? I love the paint color and the windows upstairs. And that great porch.

I want those windows!  Oh wait, there are bay windows, too! And lots of nooks and crannies. Seriously, isn’t it lovely? Patti is going to work on it again. Go pay her a visit and read the story behind her dollhouse.

Send me photos of your dollhouse. I’d love to share them with everyone.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
