You Never Know What You’ll Find When Recycling

June 28, 2018 at 10:49 am by Claudia

First, proof that the butterfly bush is still alive:

After I took this, I cut back more of the old wood. Growth is really slow this year, but we haven’t had much rain. Thankfully, we got rain off and on during the day yesterday and lots of rain last night. We may get some thunderstorms today, as well.

What do you see in this picture that is new? If you follow me on Instagram, you already know the answer.

I recycled yesterday and when I went to the transfer station/town dump, I noticed this:

I took a quick picture for IG and went on my way to our local nursery. The IG post said something about the discovery of the dollhouse and that I needed another dollhouse like a hole in the head.

I promptly forgot about it as I went to work laying down more mulch and adding another plant to the shade garden. I was busy doing outdoor things until about 2:00, at which point, I came in the house, took a shower, and had lunch. Not until about 2:45 did I check Instagram. I saw comment after comment about the dollhouse, that I should get it, that I could redo it and give it away, or auction it off, etc.

Suddenly it hit me upside the head. I had to rescue it.

I jumped in the car, hoping that the transfer station was still open. I knew that someone else might have snagged it by then, which would have been mildly disappointing, but – let’s face it – I have more dollhouses than I know what to do with and I haven’t done anything with at least three of them. It’s been a dollhouse dry spell for quite a long time.

When I pulled up, there it was. Still sitting on the ground, all by itself. I asked Dan, who runs the place, if I could take it. He said I could. Dan sees things that people throw in the large dumpsters and occasionally pulls something that he thinks someone might want. He almost always pulls toys that are in good shape, knowing that someone will love it.

So I grabbed it and he said if he came across any more dollhouses, he’d save them for me. (Gulp.)

Here it is. It’s an inexpensive house and, though not put together as badly as Hummingbird Cottage was when I first got it, it needs work.

Not the best picture as it’s very gray outside and there’s not a lot of light.

I’m thinking ‘Carpenter Gothic,’ a style I’ve always been drawn to.

As you can see, I’ve already started ripping up the ugly green carpet and the kitchen tiles. Whoever put it together did a good job of it. I need to repair a few things and add wood putty to those slits that show on the outside and inside The shingles are the same shingles that are on Hummingbird Cottage. I’ll get rid of the trim at the top because it’s out of scale and makes the dollhouse look too childlike. As you know, my dollhouses aren’t for kids, they’re for adults!

The bedroom.

Bathroom.

Kitchen.

Living room.

There is trim missing here and there:

It needs a fair amount of work. But somehow, even though I have my modern dollhouse (which I have done next to nothing to) and my loft, also next to nothing, and my 1/2″ scale house that I’m supposedly building, this little freebie has jump started an urge to work on something. Just like Hummingbird Cottage, I get energized by the chance to rehab, flip, whatever you want to call it.

I’m glad everyone urged me to go back and get it. After I picked it up, I wondered what I had been thinking when I left it behind. I know what I was thinking: we have no room for it. But, what the heck. With the horrific things happening to our country, I need something, in addition to reading and gardening, to keep me sane.

Maybe the angels thought the same thing and led me to it.

More later.

Don told me that Christy (the lead in Anastasia  and one of my favorite people in the world) had a rare night off last night and she came to the show with her boyfriend. He got to talk to her afterwards. She loved it. I’m so glad she got to see it before it closes. I like it when my worlds – Anastasia  and Escape to Margaritaville  – collide.

Happy Thursday.

Batteries and Movies and Minis

December 16, 2017 at 8:55 am by Claudia

I’ve been sticking close to home while the remnants of this ‘whatever-it-is’ are still hanging around. I’m finally feeling stronger and have more energy, so I was looking forward to getting out and running some errands yesterday. Don left the house first, then about 10 minutes later, I went out the door, only to find that the battery on my car had died. It was unbelievably cold out and I tried and tried, but I finally went back inside and texted Don and then called our emergency road service. About an hour after that, a guy arrived who jumped started the battery and then I spent the next hour at Mavis Discount Tire (about two miles from our house) where they replaced the battery.

Curses! Since my dad gave us this car, I had no idea how old the battery was, so my instinct was to just get a new one and then the guys at the shop confirmed it was bad, so now it’s a done deal.

A day spent on car problems is never a fulfilling day.

More pictures of Caroline’s abode. There are some pine boughs on the cabinet by the door.

Another view of the den.

Caroline drinks her coffee in bed.

Caroline’s new shoes, some macarons from Ladurée, and some Jane Austen.

One of the very first pieces that I purchased for the dollhouse. The wood was dark and shiny, like a lot of dollhouse furniture out there and the cushions were white satin. I painted and aged it, and then I reupholstered the cushions.

For those of you who are newer readers, this was a rescue dollhouse. I bought it for $30 and it was in pretty bad shape. It had been assembled incorrectly and there was water damage on the bottom floors. I rehabbed the whole structure inside and out and then proceeded to decorate it. It took about six years. I didn’t rush it and it was a sharp learning curve, but I really enjoyed the whole process. And so many of the pieces came from friends and blog readers. It’s a true labor of love.

Anyway, if you’re new and you’re curious, there’s a dollhouse category on the navigation bar just under the title of this blog. You can click that and read the whole story. I’ve also built and decorated a house for Don (his mini studio) which I gave him on his 65th birthday. And I’m starting, but just barely, a modern structure.

We watched one of my favorite movies ever last night – The Shop Around the Corner, starring Jimmy Stewart, Margaret Sullavan, Frank Morgan and a host of great character actors. I can’t begin to estimate how many times I’ve seen it, but let’s just say I know every inch of it. Then we got caught up in the next movie, Holiday Affair, starring a young Janet Leigh and Robert Mitchum and Wendell Corey. The real star, to Don and me, was the young boy who played her son. He was incredible – such a natural screen presence!

We couldn’t get over how honest and charming his work was. So, after the movie, I googled his name – Gordon Gebert – and found out that he had gone to become an architect and has taught architecture at City College in New York for years. He’s married to a professor at Vassar, and lives just across the river from us in Poughkeepsie! Go figure! It’s so nice to read about a child actor who grew into a well adjusted adult. If you haven’t seen this movie, you should watch it someday just to see his performance.

Okay. Have to go and run those darned errands!

Happy Saturday.

Caroline’s Christmas

December 15, 2017 at 8:53 am by Claudia

To be honest, I wasn’t going to help Caroline decorate her house this Christmas. Just wasn’t in the mood. But some gentle reminders from readers helped to change my mood and yesterday found me digging out the mini Christmas boxes.

Caroline was at work, so I went ahead and did it all myself.

I made that Christmas tree three years ago. It involved lots of glue and lycopodium, which is preserved princess pine. A few hours later, I scrubbed the glue from my fingers and I had a finished tree. Next year, I’ll refresh it as it’s lost some pine bows along the way, but it’s held up surprisingly well. You can find the post with instructions here. Decorating the tree is always a challenge (much cursing was heard yesterday) so I keep it simple.

Nancy Drews on the coffee table. Christmas candies in a bowl.

Just a little bottlebrush tree here in the living room, as the tree lives in the den.

Christmas cards on the side table.

Another bottlebrush tree in the kitchen.

And some wrapping supplies in the studio/office.

I have to tell you – I took these photos with my new iPhone. I couldn’t be happier with them. The camera is a big improvement from the one on my older phone. Taking pictures with my big girl camera is problematic because I can only get so close to the subject matter. The rooms are tiny and I have spent many, many frustrating hours taking pictures that didn’t capture the details.

This, on the other hand, is a big WOW! I can get right in the rooms because of the iPhone’s smaller size. I’m so happy with the results. I didn’t do any editing except to brighten them a bit. Other than that, they are as taken and the details really show. I can’t wait to take a whole new round of pictures of this house and Don’s mini Studio.

Caroline was happy with the results.

I’d love to find a mini version of an aluminum tree for the new modern dollhouse. I’m on it.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
