Caroline Wants Equal Time

April 13, 2016 at 9:01 am by Claudia

Yesterday, as I was wandering around the downstairs, I thought I heard someone talking.

But Don wasn’t home and it wasn’t me, so how could that be?

Curious, I tried to find the source. As I moved nearer to the den, the voice grew louder.

I might have guessed. It was Caroline and she wasn’t happy. Once I got her to calm down and speak clearly, I understood. Apparently all these posts of mine about Roseville Pottery and my growing collection have ticked her off.

“Where are the photos of my  Roseville? And why do I only have four pieces?”

“Well, Caroline,” I said, “The answer to your second question is simply that it’s very, very hard to find miniature Roseville Pottery. There is only one source and I think I’ve found all I can find.”

She wasn’t happy.

I quickly interjected, “But I can take a few photos of your Roseville and some of your other pottery. I’ll post them tomorrow, okay?”

This seemed to do the trick. At least, for now.

4-13 miniroseville

There you go, Caroline. She does have some pretty pieces, doesn’t she? Like me, she prefers to display them, rather than actually use them to hold flowers. “They’re works of art,” she says. “They don’t need flowers.”

Left to right: Bleeding Heart vase, White Rose vase, Columbine vase and Fuchsia vase. (These are exact replicas of life-sized Roseville vases, by the way. I looked them up in my reference books.)

She urged me to take more pictures.

4-13 minivase

She loves this vase in the den. Barbara gave it to her.

4-13 minipottery

And she loves the pottery in her cabinet. Although I should urge her to straighten that cream colored vase on the right. It’s going to tip over.

Am I stating the obvious here when I say that Caroline seems to be modeling her collection after mine? Right down to the Singing Bird? They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I guess I should be flattered.

4-13 minipotteryinkitchen

I used to have a couple of these Fiesta pitchers. I regret selling them.

Hmmm. I wonder if I should collect them again?

Then it would be me copying Caroline who originally copied me. If you know what I mean.

I wrote a post about beloved children’s author Beverly Cleary’s 100th birthday, which was yesterday. I’d love you to come by and share some of your favorite Beverly Cleary books with us.

Happy Wednesday.

Mystery Solved

January 29, 2016 at 9:25 am by Claudia

As to the mystery item….where did we leave off?

Ah yes. I ordered it online and drove to another Target location to pick it up. But first, some back story. Last week, when I was back home, I read a post on a favorite blog, Call of the Small, about a child’s dollhouse she had picked up at Target. Call of the Small is one of several miniaturists who love the midcentury modern look in miniatures and dollhouses, and it’s hard to find dollhouses that have that look because most of them are more traditional in design.

This particular dollhouse was $49, and it was part of a line called Our Generation, the Lori 6″ dollhouse – Loft to Love. The 6″ notation refers to the doll size. Dolls for dollhouses are not something I am into. But the house itself looked to me like a great roombox (which just got auto corrected to rhumba!) and a fun way to play with the midcentury modern look – a look I’m not at all interested in for my real home, but one I’ve really come to love in miniatures.

I was going to stop at our local Target on my way back to Hartford, but I didn’t. Thus began my Hartford-area search. And now I have it.

1-29 roomboxoutside

Here’s a glimpse of the outside. The door is plastic and huge (probably for the dolls) but it can work. Green felt top for a roof garden.

Here’s the inside:

1-29 roombox1

You can see the loft and a battery operated yellow light, which I’ll probably remove at some point. I’m in love with the tall windows. Since this was designed as a kid’s toy, plastic furniture sets are available for the rooms, though there were none available at the Target store I went to. It comes with a kitchen.

1-29 roomboxwithkitchen

It’s okay, but it’s plastic. It takes up too much of the main space. And it’s a little bigger than 1:12 – maybe 1:10? I’m not sure. I think I’ll be ‘redesigning’ the kitchen.

1-29 roombox2

1-29 roombox3

I think it’s really cool.

I brought a couple of pieces back with me, just to play a bit. But not enough to truly play, darn it!

1-29 roombox4

Such a neat space and so full of possibilities. After all, though I have midcentury modern in the Top Secret Project, it is for Don. So I can’t really play with it after it’s finished. I have to be a good girl and leave it alone.

Reader Bridget solved the mystery and I was shocked and delighted that she did! Good for you, Bridget. I left one clue in yesterday’s comments and replies: miniatures. That, coupled with the fact that I was looking for the item at Target, was apparently enough for Bridget. Bravo!

It’s available online here, if you’re at all interested. Target: once again I am referring readers to your site.

Ahem. Hint: Loveseat.

The Target I went to yesterday had about three of these left. I think they’re quickly going out of stock because the one I visited the other day had none on the shelves. And none of the Targets had the accessories, but since I wasn’t interested in them, it was fine. In other words, they’re pretty picked over, due, I’m sure, to it being post-Christmas.

So I have added a little dollhouse to the temporary digs. I wish there was a miniatures shop nearby but there isn’t. Sigh.

And I do have to work. Right?

Happy Friday.

Some News

December 14, 2015 at 9:30 am by Claudia

12-14 catalpa

Gray days here.

I took this shot of the Catalpa tree because, if you look closely, you can see the bean pods hanging from the branches.

Did I ever tell you we had some honeybees come back to the Catalpa in late summer? If you remember, we had honeybees that lived in the tree for years and then a few years ago, an aggressive bee or two got in there and they were attacking us if we got too close, so we called in a beekeeper. We didn’t do anything because we decided to wait it out until winter, when, sadly, the bee colony died out. They didn’t come back that spring. We covered the access holes with window screen material.

But one day this summer, Don saw bees going in and out of an impossibly tiny opening at the top of the screening. They weren’t aggressive and we were happy to have them back. They disappeared at the first hard frost, but I’m hoping they come back next spring. Honeybees, you are welcome here. Just don’t attack us.

Clarification: When I mention hanging lights on the porch, let me assure you there is no climbing involved. We drape the lights over the railings, from post to post. Easy as pie and nothing I can’t do rather easily. No ankle worries.

New topic: I knew this was coming out in December (it’s the January 2016 issue), but since it’s published in the UK, I have to wait for my copy to arrive in the mail. Honestly, I was afraid they might have scuttled the article – these things happen all the time in the magazine industry – and when I wrote to the Editor yesterday to see if I was indeed in the issue, I got an automatic reply that she was on maternity leave. I finally found some info online that led me to believe I was indeed in the issue, so I bought a digital copy at pocketmags.

12-13 doll'shouse mag for blog post

Shabby chic cottage renovation? That’s Caroline’s dollhouse! We’re the lead article. Whoo hoo!

12-14 article2

This is a screen capture from my phone. It’s much easier to read the digital copy on the phone than on my laptop.

Gosh, they did a lovely job on this. Katie Holloway, who is the editor, contacted me and asked me if I would consent to a feature. Of course! She sent some interview questions, which I answered, and asked me to send along some photos of the dollhouse. Since I had also been featured in American Miniaturist  this year, I made sure to take all new photos so that each magazine had a different (and not duplicated) set.

The interview was fun; it gave me the chance to tell my dollhouse story. And the last page shows a photo of the bedroom, along with the title:

Get the look…Shabby Chic Bedroom. Replicate the style of Claudia’s shabby chic bedroom with these similar items.

And there are photos of a bed frame, rug, dresser, chair and wallpaper in the style of the room I decorated. Such fun!

I’m thrilled.

I haven’t told Caroline yet. I’m going to wait until the actual magazine arrives and then I’ll give her a copy, just as I did with American Miniaturist.

A big, big thank you to Katie Holloway and everyone at The Dolls’ House Magazine for the article. They really did a bang-up job and I couldn’t be happier with the end result.

I’ve seen this magazine at Barnes & Noble occasionally. But it takes a while for British magazines to arrive. Since I know this question will come up, the best way to get a copy is to buy a digital copy at pocketmags (dot) com. It’s very reasonable at $3.99.

I don’t mind telling you, seeing that article yesterday was a much needed bright spot in my day. In my month, actually.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
