The Day After

December 26, 2014 at 9:05 am by Claudia

Are you a little tired today? I am, even though our Christmas was low-key and stress free. No matter how easily you take it, it’s still an ‘event’ and events always leave me feeling more than a little tired the next day.

Oh goodness, Christmas was lovely. We had such a nice day.

12-25coffeecake

It started with our annual Christmas Coffee Cake. Oh lordy, it was good! (We’ll be dining on it this morning, as well.)

Then some present opening. Then a break for another piece of coffee cake. Then a few more presents.

12-25littlegirl

This one slept through it all. Usually, she’s right in there with us during all the unwrapping. But she was tired this year. She opened her presents from Santa early in the afternoon.

In keeping with our mission to ‘mix it up,’ which started this year when we chose to forego the standard Thanksgiving meal, Don decided to make vegetarian Chinese food.

Spring rolls. Stir fry. Unbelievably good! He really knocked it out of the park.

Then we watched Rear Window, which was one of my presents. I love that movie and TCM rarely airs it, so I wanted my own copy. Thank you, Don.

And we had some pumpkin pie.

Another present that I requested was this:

12-25chandelier

A chandelier for the dollhouse. I didn’t wire this dollhouse for electricity so I have to use battery operated lighting. I found a great source in Manhattan Dollhouse, which carries its own line of lighting under the name of Sutton Miniatures. This particular chandelier might stay in the living room or it might move to the den (because I plan on buying more, of course.) We’ll see. I’d even considered it for the bedroom, but Don and I thought it looked the best in the living room.

12-25chandelier2

Isn’t it pretty?

12-25chandelier3

Now I want lights in every room.

That will take some time.

12-25chandelier4

I’m really pleased with the quality of the lighting. Manhattan Dollhouse is located in FAO Schwarz in NYC. I wanted to stop in there when we went into the city to see Rockefeller Center, but it was just far enough away that I knew it would be impossible to swing it. So I sent the link to Don and voilà!

I’ll share some more gifts with you tomorrow.

I hope your day was everything it should be; filled with love, laughter, joy and, above all, peace.

I’m off to warm up some coffee cake.

Happy Friday.

Simple Holiday Decorating: In Both Cottages

December 22, 2014 at 9:14 am by Claudia

Except for the Christmas a few years ago when Don was away working in California, I don’t think I’ve ever done Christmas as simply as I have this year. I’m a great believer in trusting my instincts and they gently advised me to “Cut back.”

I’ve never been one to decorate every room of my home for the holidays. At the most, I decorate the living room and den – the two rooms we live in the most. There are always simple outdoor lights and a wreath on the door.

This year, I didn’t even put up the small white tree that is normally in the living room. Not because I’m not in the Christmas spirit – I am. I simply had no urge to. So I didn’t.

It’s enormously freeing. The den seems to be the decorated room this year and that makes perfect sense. It’s the room in which we gather every evening. It’s the room where I blog and read. So, (let’s not bother with a drumroll) here are our Christmas decorations for Mockingbird Hill Cottage.

12-22 CottageChristmas 1

You’ll recognize our new bookshelves in the den. On one of the upper shelves is my Debbee Thibault wooden angel. She was recently rediscovered and now she is a part of our Christmas.

Let me stop and share my little lamp with you. I bought this over a year ago. It’s the companion lamp to the one in my studio – from Ikea’s Ranarp line. I kept it in a closet until we finally got the bookshelves up.

12-22 CottageChristmas 2a

I love the cloth covered cord. I love the white powder coated metal. It provides some reading light for the other end of the sofa.

Back to decorations.

12-22 CottageChristmas 3a

A simple bottle brush tree and two vintage putz houses on the bottom shelf.

12-22 CottageChristmas 4

The Necco Snow Globe on the other side of the sofa.

12-22 CottageChristmas 5

The framed photos of childhood visits to Santa are propped up on the music cabinet, along with three little bottle brush trees.

12-22 CottageChristmas 6

And the Christmas Tree, a fragrant Noble Fir.

That, my friends, is it.

putzhouses1

Except for the beautiful putz houses given to me by Chris. They are in the living room. I love them.

I can’t tell you enough how liberating this is. No stress. No craziness. No elaborate decorations for a Christmas Blog Tour (though I probably would never be invited to take part in one, anyway!) Just simple, heartfelt decorations that we love and treasure and have the time to appreciate.

I find I am embracing simple; less rather than more. I’ll let department stores and Santa Lands and Rockefeller Center do the ‘more.’ That’s as it should be. I love seeing all of that. It’s beautiful and magical. But here, in our home, we’re going with simple. Who knows? Next year, I may put up the little white tree and the bottle brush wreaths again. But really, in the end, all I need is the real tree, beautiful and majestic, which I’m feasting my eyes on at this very moment.

Caroline seems to be on the same page as me. She does her own thing, you know that, but I’ve peeked into her home and I think you’ll notice some similarities.

12-22 DH Christmas 3

There’s a wreath on the front door and a wreath hanging on the newel post. That’s it for downstairs.

12-22 DH Christmas 2

Her studio/office shows signs of gift wrapping.

12-22 DH Christmas

But here is the room where the decorations are: her den on the second floor. There’s the tree, clearly the centerpiece of the room.

12-22 DH Christmas 4

And there are the gifts, waiting under the tree.

Caroline, like me, spends most of her time in her den, so it seems to be the perfect place for celebrating the season.

She likes simple, too.

To close, a bit of bokeh for you.

There is a new post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page today.

Happy Monday.

Baubles, Bangles & Beads

December 14, 2014 at 8:38 am by Claudia

12-14 - Stringing beads2

I’ve taken to stringing beads.

There was a time, a few years back, where I became excited at the possibility of making jewelry. I purchased beads and tools and wire – everything one might need to fashion an earring or a necklace. And, in fact, I did make some earrings, some of which I still wear. And I made a necklace, which remains unfinished to this day.

It wasn’t for me.

But I have these supplies, you see, and I find myself dipping into them occasionally for the dollhouse. For example, the doorknob on the front door is made from a jewelry finding.

Since I want the newly made dollhouse Christmas tree to last, I am hesitant to glue anything to it. Ideally, I’d like it to be like a real-sized Christmas tree; ornaments go on, ornaments come off, and the tree is unchanged. That would give me some decorating leeway from year to year.

Today I planned on making tiny individual ornaments. However, I quickly realized that I did not have either the skill or the patience for that little exercise.  Oh, no.

“What about a beaded garland?” said I. Which led to a long bead stringing session, longer than I had planned. I took breaks to do the dishes, vacuum, dust, take a shower, and do the laundry.

12-14 - Stringing beads

Lots and lots of beads.

I ended up with this, which I will most likely tweak and tweak again. I also plan to add another garland in multi-colored beads.

12-14 - beadedtree

Caroline might like a bit more on the tree. We’ll have to negotiate.

12-14 - DHtreeinden2

12-14 - DHpresents2

Caroline has been wrapping presents. I haven’t even bought any yet. Caroline, you’re embarrassing me.

But it’s not quite enough. Caroline agrees. Off to string more beads.

12-14 - DHtreeredux

Better! Those are pretty little glass beads that I had in my jewelry stash.

The wreath is on the front door:

12-14 - DHfrontdoor

And a quick shot of the new bedroom rug – this time with accurate colors. I didn’t want it to be pink. That’s why I went with this rug. There’s a little bit of pink in it, but it’s predominately ecru and light brown.

12-14 - DH bedroom

We’re off to NYC today. It will be a quick trip. We have our girl to think of and we have to make sure she’s not alone too long. We’re taking the train this time because it arrives in Grand Central Station, which is absolutely glorious at Christmas (or any time of the year) and then we’ll head over to Don’s new agents’ office, near Times Square. I’ll hang around waiting for him, then we’ll head up to Rockefeller Center. After gazing at the tree and indulging in hot chocolate, we’ll hightail it back to the station and head on home. I wish we could spend a bit more time there but when both of us are going, we just don’t have that luxury. Little Scootie (another of my nicknames for her) is more important than anything.

Happy Birthday to my cousin Eileen! Eileen, I hope you’re reading this today. Sending lots of love your way.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
