Clean = Exhausted

December 8, 2014 at 8:19 am by Claudia

Scoutie is clean once more.

We did the whole thing as quickly as possible. Nevertheless, the whole ordeal really takes a lot out of her. She used to love getting a bath, but since arthritis and achy joints have taken over, she doesn’t feel confident standing still so long. So she tenses and gets stressed and, eventually, starts to complain. I can’t say that I blame her.

She did feel better afterward and for a while she was quite frisky.

Then it hit her.

postbath1

She slept – very deeply – on the loveseat. Over the course of a few hours, her head got a wee bit closer to the floor each time I checked on her.

Finally, when I was putting freshly laundered sheets on the bed upstairs, Don called out to me: “You’ve got to see this!”

postbath2

Umm….Scout? How can you sleep that way?

As I watched her, her head started to inch downward and I jumped in and grabbed her, moving her to a new position.

postbath3

She slept through the whole thing.

Getting a bath is exhausting.

But she sure smells good!

(You can see the swelling on her leg in this photo. It’s due to her arthritis.)

I grabbed a slightly better photo of the shower curtain and rod in the dollhouse bathroom.

I swear, I have to take hundreds of photos of the dollhouse bathroom and kitchen to get a good shot. The rooms are long and narrow, so the back of the room is at the end of a sort of tunnel. It makes for an often frustrating camera adventure.

Today is a busy one. I’m getting my hair cut (it’s way too long!), we’re talking to our plumber about replacing the hot water heater (long overdue), we’re picking out our Christmas Tree. I’ve got to grab the ornament bins out of the shed and haul them inside. And, because we live in a small cottage, furniture needs to be rearranged to make room for the tree.

All this is happening today because we have a Nor’easter headed our way. The weather report sounds dire. They are using the word ‘event’ as in, it will be a Three-Day Event.

Crap. Crap. Crap.

Snow, ice, sleet, rain, wind…you name it. We’re getting it.

If you don’t see a blog post on any given day, you’ll know it’s because we’ve lost power. Fingers crossed that it stays on. The snow is supposed to be heavy and wet. I’m already sick of winter.

Sigh.

Remind me again: Why did we move here from San Diego?

Two more things: There’s a new post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page (I sure hope you’re enjoying that blog…I’m not always sure people are reading it.) And my longtime blogging friend, Connie, is selling one of her slipcovers – it’s quite lovely – and she asked me if I would link to her post. Absolutely!

Happy Monday.

Curtains! (Not) Foiled Again.

December 7, 2014 at 9:29 am by Claudia

Saturday was rainy, a sort of dismal day. So we stayed in and I worked on the dollhouse. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been trying – and failing – to add a circular shower curtain rod to the bathroom, resulting in lots of frustration and cursing. I found some florist wire at Michael’s the other day that was thicker than what I had been previously using in my futile attempts.

I managed to pull it off yesterday. It’s not perfect. But it will do for now.

I also made a shower curtain out of linen. It’s a little heavy, so I might change it out in the future. But for now, I’m rather pleased with my sincere, if amateurish, stab at getting it done.

This is a darkish photo and I’ll try to get something better later on today. These narrow rooms are always hard to capture – the light needs to be just right.

I actually tried to make little shower curtain rings out of some wire I had in my ‘making jewelry’ stash. They were pretty gosh darned cute, but in the end, I scrapped them and, instead, sewed the curtain to the rod.

Whenever I manage to pull something like this off, I shout out to Don and make him drop whatever he’s doing to come see it. He is always appropriately impressed and gives me lots of “I’m proud of you” pats on the back. Thank you, Don, for being almost as excited about this little hobby of mine as I am.

Also found in Michael’s the other day:

This map of the British Isles. Caroline is an Anglophile (as am I) and she displays this lovely vintage map above her work space.

Today, we are going to give Scout a bath in the tub. One of us will have to hold her very securely while the other bathes her. We don’t want her to feel she has to do all the work of supporting herself. She’d get very tired, very quickly. So we’ll do it for her. The old girl needs a bath desperately and today is the day. Wish us all luck!

Tomorrow is the day we’ll get our Christmas tree. It’s been moved up in our schedule because we’re due for some sort of snow event on Tuesday. The jury is still out on how much snow we’ll be hit with. Don, get ready to fire up the snowblower!

Happy Sunday.

Who, What, Where: Dollhouse Bathroom

December 6, 2014 at 9:46 am by Claudia

Today, I’m returning to the Who, What, Where Series. Normally, I’d be highlighting the bedroom, because it’s next in the sequence. But I’m waiting on a new element, so I’m going to pop over to the bathroom instead.

For the life of me, I couldn’t get an acceptable full-on shot of the bathroom, so we’ll skip that and go right to the elements of the room.

Wallpaper: Itsy Bitsy Mini; Beadboard, moldings & chair rail: miniatures.com; Tile floor: found in a craft store.

Pie Safe: I asked Marsha to purchase one for me at a miniature show out in California, I’m afraid I don’t know who the maker is; Towels: made by me from baby washcloths; Glass container with shells: a gift from Marsha; Wicker basket: a gift that was handmade by Casey; Flowers: from my stash; Red wooden container: part of a gift package from Maryanne. It was unfinished wood and I painted it red; Toilet: part of a bag of minis given to me by Heidi. I originally didn’t want to use it, but I couldn’t find anything better, so I painted it and there it is.

Rug: from A LavenderDilly, an Etsy Shop; Sink/Cabinet: from miniatures.com. I painted it red; Faucets & Taps: from miniatures.com; Glass soap dish: a gift from Jayne; Hand Towel: a gift from Norma; Mirror: part of a compact that I took apart. Casey advised me to paint the edge black; Flip Flops: a gift from Jill; Chair: made by me from a pattern in Léa’s book.

Tub: from a bag of things from Heidi. I painted it and the paint crackled. I ended up liking it; Shutters: from my stash, painted by me; Sansiveria plant in pot: a gift from Jayne.

I have plans for a few more additions; a shower curtain rod and shower curtain (wish me luck!) a vanity, and towel racks. It’s a work in progress.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
