Presenting: the Office

December 30, 2015 at 9:06 am by Claudia

Goodness, I’m so happy with my little corner of our shared office space! Yesterday, I put it all together and except for a piece of that plastic stuff to put under the chair (it doesn’t roll around easily on the carpet) and a bulletin/pin board, I’m open for business.

The days have been dreary and cloudy, so I did the best I could with my picture-taking.

Let’s take a little tour:

12-30 facingthedesk

It’s the classic work triangle. I pictured this in my mind for several months and it’s all come to life beautifully. The desk is the Malm from IKEA. You can place the drawers on the left or the right. I chose the left because I knew I would be moving back and forth between the desk and the work table. The desk has a very large work surface, which was number one on my list of requirements. I do a lot of research when I’m coaching which involves a lot of books and paper and I need space for it all. Part of the impetus for this space was the fact that I was so sick of trying to do that work within the confines of the kitchen table. It was incredibly frustrating.

The chair is also from IKEA – the Lillhöjden in a gray check. How could I resist those ties on the back?

12-30 pinkcabinet

The pink cabinet moved from the hallway into the new space. The girls maintained their perch on the top of the cabinet.

12-30 wallpockets

My birdie wall pockets are hanging on the side of the cabinet.

12-30 cornerminipottery

Framed program from the Broadway production of “Claudia” circa the Forties. Shelf unit full of miniature pottery. Lots of supplies stashed against the wall.

12-30 wickerbasketstorage

The wicker flower basket holds wood trims for mini making.

12-30 glovebox from don

The vintage pink glove box was a birthday gift from Don. He thought it would be a neat bit of storage. It is.

12-30 containers

The pottery holding pens and pencils was a gift from my friend Tina. The framed Friends motto was a gift from Lori, my friend who owns Vignettes in San Diego. And you recognize the Roseville piece, right? It’s the one that arrived in pieces and has been glued back together.

12-30 chair

The other side of the chair.

The desk lamp is Ranarp from IKEA. I have the white version on the table by my chair in the den. It’s a great utility lamp and provides a lot of light.

12-30 slopingceiling

Yes, we have sloping ceilings upstairs – in both rooms. So we have to work around them and every piece of furniture has to be measured within an inch of its life.

12-30 miniaturemaking

The other side of the triangle. This is the sewing machine table that was formerly in the niche in the hallway. When we decided to open up this space by getting rid of the bed, I immediately envisioned it as an extension of the desk. I can move it in to the wall when I don’t want it taking up as much space and I can move it even further out than it is in this picture, as well. The cart is the Råskog Utility Cart from IKEA. It somehow manages to corral almost everything I need when I’m working on the TSP.

I should add that normally the TSP is covered with a remnant of barkcloth so it remains hidden from my husband. I took advantage of his absence and unveiled it for the photos.

The plant is one of my overwintering impatiens.

Don’s guitars in the distance.

12-30 viewfromtheTSP

The view from the other side of the TSP.

12-30 eggcups

The mantel and eggcups have also moved from the hallway niche to this new space. They make me smile. The card with the word Heaven on it was the birthday card from my parents that Don gave to me.

The calendar you see hanging above the desk was a $3 find from Target.

And let’s see who joined me in the office:

12-30 lamb

The lamb with the party hat. Now the space is complete!

If we ever get a sunny day again, I’ll take more photos for you. I promise.

This was done on a budget, of course. Is there any other way? Not for yours truly!

The Malm desk: $159.00
The Lillhöjden chair: $79.99
The Ranarp desk lamp: $39.99
The Råskog Utility Cart: $29.99

Total cost: $308.97

I assembled the chair, lamp, and cart. Don and I assembled the desk – it was definitely a two person job, as was moving the big pieces into the room from the hallway.

To say I’m thrilled is an understatement. I’ve wanted this sort of arrangement for the ten years we’ve lived here. The rest of the room? Still under construction. We moved out my grandmother’s trunk and some other pieces. They are now in our storage space (huzzah!) so we have much more room to play with. Don has to rethink his part of the space. He wants to clear some clutter.

And we’re thinking a vintage loveseat would be really cool in this space. We have all sorts of plans!

I hope you like the new space! Something tells me you’ll be seeing it fairly frequently.

Happy Wednesday.

Chatty on Sunday

December 27, 2015 at 9:23 am by Claudia

I blame it all on spotting those Roseville Pottery bookends in that antique shop. Remember? That little encounter got me thinking about how much I loved Roseville and its lush, flowery patterns. And, as is my wont, I started obsessing. Just a wee bit.

Last week, my steal of a deal arrived in the mail:

12-27 magnoliavase

This gorgeous vase in the Magnolia pattern.

Yesterday, a vase that I knew I shouldn’t bid on but could not get out of mind because it was, to me, so beautiful, arrived here at the cottage. It was late in the afternoon, so this isn’t the best photo, bear with me:

12-27 rosevillewaterlily

It’s flawless. A pattern I am inordinately fond of – the Water Lily pattern. The vase is 8 inches tall. I couldn’t help it. I tried to stop myself, but I was powerless. Isn’t it beautiful?

Must stop. But I’m a firm believer in surrounding myself with the things that I love. Roseville is making me very happy at the moment. And I’ve needed something pretty that makes me smile. So be it.

You’ll be thrilled to know that we finally took the window air conditioners out of the windows yesterday. We’ve never left it this late. Don then took two non-working air conditioners to our recycling center. I also cleaned off the porch and stored the glider cushions, and dumped all the dead potted plants on the mulch pile. Don fired up the snow blower to make sure it’s working.

All this just might have happened because I read the forecast, which predicts 5-8 inches of snow for Monday night. Then ice. Then it warms up for a few days.

Crap, crap, crap.

We also spent some time in the soon-to-be-office-space, moving some of the things from my studio into the space and moving some other pieces out and into their new home in the hallway.

I also assembled one of my IKEA purchases. A sneak peek:

12-27 sneakpeek

It’s full of the paints and tools I use when working with miniatures. Today, we just might assemble the desk. There’s much to be done in this space, including finding a place for five guitars. And a mike and speakers and…

One other thing – if you like pine-scented candles, Target is carrying a seasonal group of Mrs. Meyers Clean Day soy candles in Iowa Pine.

12-27 mrsmeyerscandles

I bought three of them earlier this week. Hopefully, Target is still carrying them. They also had a cranberry scent and one other that I can’t remember. But I’m a pine girl, so whenever I find some, I snap them up. I’ve used Mrs. Meyers products for a long time, so I knew the candles would be good quality.

Ads on blogs differ according to the reader’s browsing history, but my ads keep showing Doc McStuffins  on Hulu. Did you know that the creator of Doc McStuffins, Chris Nee, is a former student of mine from my Boston University days? She was and is a terrific person. So proud of her!

Okay. I’ve yammered on quite enough for the day.

Happy Sunday.

Lovely. Simply Lovely.

December 26, 2015 at 8:52 am by Claudia

Goodness. A perfect Christmas. As Don said late in the day, ‘on our terms’ – which is to say we did it with some modifications that seemed right to us this year for any number of reasons. And it felt relaxed and easy and peaceful and…right.

12-26 coffeecake

We started with some quiet time. Then Christmas Coffee Cake (and coffee, of course.) Oh heavens, it was yummy. And lucky for us, there’s some left over for today and tomorrow!

I mentioned before that we knew what we were giving each other. We purchased it about a week or so ago.

Back story: A long time ago, I had hundreds of vinyl records. I had a turntable and a receiver and great speakers. Then CDs came along and I went over to ‘the other side.’ Years of moves and not enough space for all the albums and storage in not very good conditions has resulted in warped and damaged records to my eternal regret. When we moved to the cottage, we gave away the turntable – which wasn’t working all that well – and the rest of the audio equipment.

What were we thinking?

There is a vinyl resurgence going on, which I find incredibly heartening. New vinyl records are being manufactured (though they’re pretty pricey) and vintage vinyl is very popular. We live near a college town that has two used record shops.

One day, when I was out and about, I saw a turntable and speakers for sale at a good price – at Barnes & Noble, in fact – and an idea came to me. I knew Don missed playing LPs as well, so when I suggested that might be our present to each other, he jumped on it.

The surprises were in the albums we chose for each other. The assignment was to find four albums that we thought our mate would love (I cheated and found five.)

12-26 deskturntable

The other speaker is on the piano. The speakers are wonderful – such great sound quality! We already had quite a bit of vintage vinyl around the house, but here is what we chose for each other:

For Don from me:

Willie Nelson’s Greatest Hits – vintage
The Eagles Greatest Hits – vintage
Gordon Lightfoot – new re-issue of Sundown
Warren Zevon Envoy – vintage
Neil Young Harvest – vintage

For me from Don:

Joni Mitchell Court and Spark – vintage
Frank Sinatra Swing Along with Me – vintage
Mel Tormé Live at the Crescendo – vintage
Van Morrison Common One – vintage

For both of us: Stravinsky The Rite of Spring – vintage

It’s such fun picking out records for Don! And might I add, Don’s choices for me were spot on.

12-26 husband and mel

We spent all afternoon listening to records. We have lots and lots of CDs but there is indeed a difference in the sound of an LP. LPs have a warmer, more intimate sound. I much prefer them. CDs, being digital, are almost perfect in their separation of sounds, but I don’t think that’s the way we actually hear sounds when we’re listening to live music. I found I was missing the warmth of a vinyl record. I even like hearing the occasional pop as the record spins away on the turntable. It’s comforting, reassuring. There’s also something about holding a record in your hand, looking at the cover art, reading the liner notes – all of which you can do with a CD, but on a much smaller scale. Holding an album is a whole other experience.

Fortunately for us, our favorite local record shop is run by a guy who listens to every album he sells and there are ratings as to the quality of the album. Everything we brought home was in great condition – even the Mel Tormé album recorded in 1954. It was as if he was in the room with us.

12-26 turntable

I see a couple of Scoutie hairs have already made their way to the new turntable.

Speaking of which:

12-26 scootie

Someone, who slept through the exchange of gifts but roused herself for record listening, got lots of soft treats from Santa and Mom and Dad. She was quite happy. (Pssst! She has a birthday coming up on January 4th. She is, at this moment: Sixteen Going on Seventeen. Another musical reference.)

Dinner was delicious. Don made the Stuffed Portobello mushrooms again, with some steamed broccoli. And I made Cloud Biscuits. Pumpkin Pie for dessert.

A lovely day, with a candle burning all day long in honor of my father.

If you celebrate Christmas, I hope your day was a happy one. In fact, whatever you celebrate or don’t celebrate, I hope your day was filled with peace and joy.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
