Finished, a Cow & a Birthday

September 28, 2010 at 10:04 am by Claudia

:: The weekend here at MHC consisted of sinus congestion, a couple of headaches, baseball (Red Sox vs Yankees – we took 2 out of 3. Grin.) and embroidery. Because I was feeling a bit off, I sat around and stitched. And stitched. Reaching down into my sewing basket, I pulled one color, then another, looked up a few new-to-me stitches and, before I knew it, I was done. Yesterday afternoon, I added a few little trims and here is the finished product:

It’s so rainy and dark here today that I had to pull this chair under the skylight to grab the little natural light I could find! My initials crack me up – each one is a little higher than the next – just like I write on a blackboard.

I added some crochet edging that was on some vintage linen napkins as well as a vintage mother-of-pearl button. I wanted it to look homespun so I didn’t mind if the trim was a bit crooked or uneven.

Oh, I had such fun doing this. I have another sampler from Rebecca that I will start next. Note to Rebecca: keep ’em coming! I find this very relaxing and believe me, I can use some of that at this particular time in my life. I’m not sure what I will do with it: Hang it? Use as a pillow cover? Frame it? Right now, I’m happy simply looking at it. It makes me smile.

I’ve sent a few of you to Rebecca’s site, so I know you are having fun with this, too. If you’re thinking about trying one – go for it. The price is extremely reasonable and you’ll have such fun learning new stitches.

:: In other news, Monty the cow has been moved from his perch in the kitchen to a new spot on top of the music cabinet in the den.

We thought he felt a bit left out of family evenings in the den.  He looks happier.

:: I came back from driving husband to the station this morning to find a squirrel running around the inside of the dog corral. He was desperately trying to get out and each time he tried to climb the chicken wire, he fell down to the ground. I knew I had to get him out of there – for his safety as well as the dogs. So there I was, in the rain, trying to get the terrified squirrel to run toward the gate. He would have none of it.  He finally hid behind the planter box outside the side door and I managed to nudge him (all the while chirping frantically) toward the gate which was a few feet beyond the planter. When he saw it, he ran as fast as he could to freedom. This happened once before – with a bunny – again, in the rain. I’m grateful I saw him before I let the dogs out!

:: Finally, Happy 87th Birthday to my Dad! He’ll spend it at the Rehab Facility with my Mom. He visits twice a day, every day. And he counts the hours until she gets home. Love you, Dad.

Embroidery, Fall & Just a Bit More on Blogging

September 23, 2010 at 6:00 pm by Claudia

Isn’t embroidery floss pretty? Such an array of colors. I had to run to Michael’s yesterday to get some more shades of green for my sampler.  I’m glad these colors look right, since the one light that wasn’t working at Michael’s was directly above the embroidery floss. At 35¢ each, I threw in a few more colors. You can’t beat the price. Seriously – what can you buy for 35¢ nowadays?

I stitched quite a bit more last night. The wonderful thing about these samplers is the chance to learn new stitches. Last night, I learned the feather stitch, the bullion knot and the coral knot – all while watching baseball. (Try as I might, I can never get the colors right in these photos. They are much more vivid.)

I’ve also been in a major nesting phase – sorting, organizing and dumping. Does this happen to you in the fall? I feel compelled to get everything in order. I’m also getting the urge to paint some pieces of furniture – one or two dark pieces in the bedroom as well as the kitchen table. And, after several months of inactivity, the dollhouse is calling to me. As the days get shorter and colder, I will once more tackle the renovation of my dollhouse.

Leaves are changing color rather quickly around here. Every day I see big changes. Our sugar maple is always the first to change color and the first to drop its leaves. I wonder just how much color we will have this year. It has rained quite a bit in the last month or so, but the first part of the summer was incredibly dry and that can affect how much fall color there is.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about blogging and why we blog. I so enjoyed reading every comment. It sounds is if it struck a chord with many of you.

I’ve spoken about there being room for all types of bloggers out there. But I have one more thing to say about blogging that has to do with basic good manners. House/cottage, nesting, crafting, creative blogs are, by their nature, more cozy and welcoming than are political blogs, for example. I spoke of those bloggers who get hundreds of comments and never return the favor. I realize that keeping up with hundreds of comments on each post is impossible. We’re all busy and sometimes it takes a while before we can return the visit. But when several comments are made over a long period of time and no effort is made to respond, whether by email or a visit to the commenter’s blog, well, that sticks in my craw. It’s rude and there is no room for that.  I know it has happened to all of you. It certainly has happened to me. Those are the blogs I stop visiting.

So here’s my suggestion: If your blog has become so impossibly big that you can no longer take the time to communicate with your readers who are, after all, the reason you have become so popular, then perhaps you should rethink things. Because you might have lost the heart and soul of what made your blog so attractive to begin with.

Okay. That’s all on blogging, at least for a while. I will now descend from my soapbox.

Pottery, Stitching & Corn

September 17, 2010 at 6:34 pm by Claudia

I found this funky little pitcher today while out and about. It’s not my usual style (though I love the color) but look closer.  Sure looks like ‘CH’ to me. Since those are my initials, how could I resist? The marking on the bottom says ‘Caribe, Puerto Rico.’

I’m slowly working on my sampler – I manage to get a bit done each evening.

There’s a lot to do yet, but I really enjoy the process and don’t want to rush through it.

We’re eating some of this tonight:

This stand has the best sweet corn I have ever had the pleasure of eating. I have to tell you that any other corn-on-the-cob pales in comparison. Did I ever tell you that when I was a college student, in the days when dorm food was basically starch, I used to have magazine photos of a baked potato smothered in butter and buttery corn-on-the-cob on my bulletin board? If I had added a photo of broccoli, I would have had my favorite meal. If you had been forced to eat that food, you would have done the same thing!

While at the farm stand, I snapped this:

If you don’t already know about it, I have a new photography blog: Through a Lens Daily. I’d love it if you stopped by. The link is on my sidebar.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
