Jasmine, Darcy & Stitching

May 23, 2010 at 10:34 pm by Claudia

Certain scents evoke a strong response – a sense memory so strong that you are instantly transported to a place, an event, a time in your life. For me, Jasmine is one of those scents. You find it everywhere in San Diego. Night Blooming Jasmine reminds me of walking my dogs in the evening in my old neighborhood here in San Diego and walking through Balboa Park on my way to a performance. It reminds me of meeting my husband and stealing a kiss as we walked to our cars along the back road behind the theater. It is such a heady, glorious scent. It is one of my favorite things about being in San Diego.

We have finished our rehearsals in the rehearsal hall and will move onstage Tuesday for the beginning of tech rehearsals. Monday night is the memorial for Craig Noel, the founder of the theater. Several hundred people are expected. I look forward to seeing many old friends.

I see Darcy most every day. Here is a photo from my walk home today:

Awwww.

For the first time since I arrived here, I did some stitching. This is my project based on Theresa McFayden’s Freestyle Embroidery EZine. Since I will have more free time in the coming weeks, I hope to add more to it.

By the way, as I was yet again sitting on the sofa, I experienced another earthquake yesterday. This time I was talking to my husband on the phone and I told him it seemed worse than the last. It was. It was a 5.3 earthquake with a 4.5 aftershock.

I think 2 earthquakes are enough, don’t you?

Scout’s Indignation & Square #7

March 7, 2010 at 1:05 am by Claudia

Miss Scout is a bit indignant. If you look closely at her left rear paw, you will see why.

She has to wear a sock, of all things! She is not happy. The other day I discovered that one of the pads on her foot was very red and irritated. It looked like she scraped it on something. It was bleeding, so after a little clean-up and some neosporin, I grabbed one of my socks and on it went. And to add to the indignity, each time she goes outside we have to slip a plastic bag over her foot with a rubberband to keep the sock dry. Sensitive soul that she is, she actually went into a funk for a day or two. However, she has now come to terms with the whole thing. Sort of. She is like an elephant, though, she never forgets – which is why I am on the receiving end of that stare.

Aren’t these the most scrumptious colors? I went to Michael’s yesterday to look for a bigger hoop (couldn’t find one,) a needle threader (found it and it has saved my eyes and my patience!) and some more floss. They are so beautiful, I just had to take a picture.

I’m having so much fun on this embroidery stitchalong! To tell you the truth, I have not been motivated to quilt or knit in a long while. I did a lot of piecing when I was in San Diego last year. And I’ve picked up my knitting many times – knit a couple of rows – and then ignored it for weeks on end. This embroidery is so portable. I can pick it up any time and stitch a little square or two. Each of the colors of floss in the photo were about 30 cents each – much less expensive than yarn or fabric. I wouldn’t mind embroidering a pattern but I really like the free form style of embroidery. Okay. On to Square #7:

This one is entitled “Ode to Claudia’s Blue Eyeglasses with a guest appearance by her Purple Coneflowers.” (Boy, it is so much easier to get a good close-up on a sunny day!)

Have a wonderful Sunday. Ours promises to be sunny and in the low 50’s! Does this mean that Spring is on the way?

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
