Pondering Purple

August 5, 2013 at 8:25 am by Claudia

Funny how a color can suddenly reappear in your world; not that it ever really disappeared. I’ve been pondering purple lately.

I bought this little plant at Trader Joe’s when we made a quick stop on our drive to Hartford. I liked the color and the tiny flowers and I wanted a potted plant for the apartment. I remembered the deep window sills from my previous stay and knew they would be a good home for this little beauty.

Then I hung this:

purplequilt2

A favorite creation of mine that had recently been in a stack of folded quilts, its gorgeous purples hidden from view.

It reminded me of my youthful passion for purple and lavender. In the tiny little bungalow where my parents raised 4 children, space was at a premium: two small bedrooms downstairs and a bigger bedroom carved out of the attic space. One bathroom. For a while there it was just my brother and me, so my parents used the attic room and we each had our own bedroom downstairs. But then my sisters came along and the scramble for space began. Long story short: I ended up sharing the attic space with my much younger sisters for several years. When my brother left the nest, I got to move back downstairs and I finally had my own room.

If you look on the sidebar, you will see this:

solitary

Oh so true. I’ve always needed time alone, in my own little space. But I rarely had it when I was growing up. It’s very hard to retreat into the bliss of solitary-ness when you’re surrounded by 5 other family members in a space where you can hear every conversation, every sound. So on that day when I was able to re-claim a downstairs bedroom, Mom asked me what color I wanted the walls to be.

Lavender. Absolutely. Lavender.

Lavender it was. Mom bought a matching purple-y print bedspread and curtains. I was in heaven. I could shut the door to my private space, play original Broadway cast albums endlessly, read voraciously and tend to my potted plants. I could decorate my room. Just for me.

Later, in the days when we all had our ‘colors’ done, I was categorized as a Winter. Winters look good in jewel tones, not unlike the colors in this quilt. So I started wearing purples and deep reds. I looked good in them. Even now, with my hair no longer the deep brown it used to be, I still look good in them. Purples again. But not lavender. No, that was too pastel for a Winter like me.

I’m falling in love with purples all over again. Seeing that quilt hung on the wall of my temporary living space makes me smile.

purplefabric

Catching a glimpse of a stack of purple fabric, nestled between reds and yellows, makes me happy.

Is there a color that calls to you from your distant past?

On another note: My friend Dawn just moved her Blogger blog to WordPress. (You should go visit her. It looks great!) When a blog is moved to WordPress, the feed has to be rerouted and anyone that followed with Google Friend Connect will no longer get updated posts. As for blogrolls, sometimes the URL has to be re-entered to update the feed even though the actual URL hasn’t changed. I have Dawn’s blog on my blogroll (up in the navigation bar) and I noticed it hadn’t updated since right before the move. So I deleted the URL and simply re-entered the same information. Bingo. It updated.

If you have Creative Cain Cabin on your blogroll, can you do Dawn a favor and update the information? I had to ask this same thing of my readers when I moved. And if you read the blog through Google Friend Connect, please resubscribe, either by email or through a reader such as Bloglovin.

We all have to help each other out here in blogland, right?

By the way, Dawn is currently adding all the information necessary to design graphics for fellow bloggers. She just did my watermark and my signature and I love the results. If you’re at all interested, stop by and see what she has to offer. It may take a couple of days for all the information to be available, but in the meantime, you can contact her via her email address.

Okay.

Happy Monday.

Settling In

July 30, 2013 at 9:22 am by Claudia

Hello from Hartford. Same apartment, though some things I left behind (nothing big) are missing. This used to happen to me at the Old Globe apartments in San Diego; things seem to migrate elsewhere. I’ve fluffed the apartment as best I can. Here’s what it looked like pre-Claudia.

tuesmessyapt

tuesprelivingroom

tuespredesk

These apartments are in an old office building and they have incredibly high ceilings, which help to make a smallish apartment seem more spacious.

After:

tuesLRquilt

I brought a quilt from home. I made this pansy quilt several years ago and it remains my favorite. I decided that if I had to be away from home for 2 months, I was going to secure that darned quilt to the wall with pushpins. Purple pushpins, I might add.

I also added that piece of barkcloth. It covers an incredibly ugly table.

I’m fortunate to have a television with a larger screen. Some of the TVs in these apartments are really tiny.

tuespansyquilt

I’ll try to get a crisper photo of the quilt another time. It’s a wee bit dark in this apartment at the moment.

tuesdesk

The desk – where I tap away at the computer and create compelling blog posts. I moved that covered canvas off the wall and decided to use it as a bulletin board.

tuesbulletinboard

My director is a really nice guy. He left me this note with a bottle of wine. I’m crazy about him.

tuesdeskflowerspens

We stopped at Trader Joe’s along the way, of course. Had to stock up on food…and flowers.

tuespurpleflowers

Hello, pretty purple flowers!

tuessewingtable

My own little sewing studio. There’s Mabel. She’s wearing her little cover-up at the moment.

tuesvaseandwine

I brought my pink vase from home and filled it with pretty flowers from Trader Joe’s. That’s the wine that Darko left for me. I don’t really drink, so it will probably be in its intact state at the end of my two months here. Unless I have a particularly difficult time. Ahem.

tuesafterkitchen

tuesshelves

Bags of reference books ready to be transported to the rehearsal space. Quilt tops ready to be hand quilted. I haven’t a clue what kind of project I want to do, so I grabbed a lot of fat quarters and brought them with me. Hopefully, I will be inspired.

tuesquilltonbed

I snatched this quilt off of our bed at home. Don will be fine without it. But I wouldn’t be. There, ensconced among my pillows (also brought from home) are Wayfrum Holmes, Maggie Rabbit and Little Lamb.

They like adventure.

So, there you have it, my friends. My little home-away-from-home.

By the way, some of you complimented me on my new watermark. See it up there? A red circle with dots, along with the name of my blog and my trademark lamb-with-the-party-hat?

My good friend Dawn Cain of Creative Cain Cabin designed it for me. I have a full on crush on this watermark. Dawn lives in Michigan (my home state.) She’s preparing to move to WordPress and I’ve been helping her in my own small way as she navigates this transition. Oh, you’re going to love her new blog design!

I’ve never regretted for one minute moving to WordPress, by the way. I love everything about it. I did the whole thing myself and the transition was relatively seamless. It’s been nothing but a positive experience for me.

Anyway, Dawn made two versions of this watermark, one with black lettering and one with white. Once she moves her blog, she will be available to design one just for you. I’ll keep you posted as to when she’s up and running.

Rehearsals start today. I had dinner with my friend Mary, who is the stage manager, last night. Here’s to old friends and the new friends I will make during this process.

Oh by the way, one of the perils of staying in temporary housing? Not realizing the alarm clock has been set and being jarred awake by a continuous ringing at 12 am and 1 am.

Happy Tuesday.

A Chatty Post

July 25, 2013 at 8:46 am by Claudia

♦ Well, who would have known that so many of you have a Detroit or Michigan connection?  I am continually reminded of what a small world it is! Thanks for all the Vernors and Detroit love, my friends.

hostablooms

♦ Psst! Don’t say anything because you might jinx it, but the temperature here went down to the fifties last night.

What??

Surely this will be short-lived, but I am determined to enjoy these coolish temperatures while they last. On the agenda today: mowing. With all the lawn we have, mowing is on the agenda at least 4 out of 7 days of the week. Soon Don will be taking over that job. I’ll miss it, it keeps me in shape.

I haven’t begun to pack because I’m in denial. And because Don has the big suitcase. The suitcase transfer will take place on Sunday.

♦ While in Hartford, I’ll be staying in the same apartment I was in last spring. I requested it. Remember the adventure with the mattress in the middle of the night? Since I wrestled that softer mattress down the hall and into the apartment at 3 am, I think I deserve to use it once more, don’t you?

Two months. I’ll return home on my dad’s 90th birthday, September 28th. Yikes.

♦ By the way, Don has heard that his American Experience will air sometime in November. I’ll keep you posted. Since individual PBS stations often air programs at different times and days, you’ll have to check your local listings.

pinkbloom

♦ I very seldom buy magazines anymore because so much of the content is a repeat of what I’ve already seen on the web or is uninspiring or the darned magazine costs too much. This is a big change for me as I used to buy tons of them. I know, however, how great it is to be featured in a magazine, as it has happened to me twice. It’s a big thrill. Two of my friends have recently been featured in Romantic Homes.

missbegonia

My dear friend Judy, of 20 North Ora, has a two page spread showing how she made a vintage dress form into a thing of beauty: Miss Begonia. Congratulations, Judy! Stop by and visit my friend. She and her dear husband John have been battling illness in what has become a very tough time for them. Judy has to be one of the most generous and loving people I have ever had the privilege to meet and she can use our prayers and support.

And in the same issue:

jane

Dear Jane of Blondie’s Journals. Congratulations, Jane!

♦ To those of you who participate in A Favorite Thing: After this week’s get together, I’m going to take a little break from the weekly party. I will be in Hartford for two months where I will be coaching two plays at the same time. I expect to be working long hours. That, along with my daily blog posts, will consume most of my time. Adding the party to the mix will be difficult, if not impossible. I can’t guarantee that I would have any time to visit the links. Frankly, this weekend will be tough as well. I’ll be in the Berkshires all day Saturday, will be packing on Sunday and traveling to Hartford on Monday. So, my dear friends, a two month sabbatical is on the docket. I hope you understand.

But, just to be clear, I will continue to blog every day, like clockwork!

♦ I’ve been slow in choosing the winners of the book giveaway. Apologies! I kept forgetting. This is a rare treat; I am able to give away 5 copies of The Last Camellia. The winners are:

• Nancy Blue Moon

• Patty

• Judy Ainsworth

• Grace

• Donnamae

I will be sending you an email. If you read this post before you get the email, drop me a note with your mailing address. Congratulations!

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
