On Wednesday

July 18, 2018 at 8:39 am by Claudia

The humidity has broken and this morning is beautifully cool. We had a huge thunderstorm yesterday which went on for a long time; torrential rain, thunder, lightning, black skies. It was rather spectacular. I’m always, this particular summer, grateful for rain. We need it so.

I saw this little monarch the other day. Quickly spotting the first zinnia to open, he zeroed in for a landing.

Every time I see a monarch butterfly, I am heartened. Our milkweed is invaluable as it is the one and only habitat for monarchs. That’s why I let it self-seed wherever it wants to.

That little moth I showed you yesterday is called a Rosy Maple Moth. As it was on lavender that was right next to the maple tree, it all makes sense.

The purple (and white) coneflowers are fully open. More than almost any other flower here, I think that coneflowers are the perfect cottage garden flower. They’re sturdy and self-seeding, they last a long time, and they’re beautiful.

Me taking a picture of Don taking a picture of me. That camera is heavy!

More Holga photos:

A young woman sitting on a stoop in the Village.

A lost sneaker.

We’re having brunch at a local restaurant with Rick and Doug today. I haven’t seen them in ages. We love them and look forward to catching up and to certain laughter. We always laugh a lot when we’re together.

You surely know, by the way, without me writing in detail, my thoughts on the word “treason” and its application to the man who occupies the Oval Office. Enough said.

Happy Wednesday.

Experiments and Surprises

July 17, 2018 at 8:54 am by Claudia

Playing with digital cameras and film cameras. It was so frigging hot and humid yesterday that I’m amazed we managed to take any pictures at all!

First, let me show you a close-up of Don’s new baby:

It’s gorgeous. He practiced putting it together and taking it apart yesterday morning. Fortunately, he had taken a video of Louis showing him how to do it.

In the meantime, after writing a blog post, I started to unbox my new Canon 77D. I’d show you a picture, but it doesn’t look all that different from my Rebel T3i. But it’s definitely an upgrade and I can tell by the quality of my photos. It came with an 18-35mm lens, which can take wide angle shots like this one of the kitchen:

I’ve never been able to get this much of the kitchen in one shot. (For better or worse!)

I took a lot of pictures of this pink and cream moth I found on the lavender. I’ve never seen this kind of moth before. So pretty!

I took a lot of experimental photos, just to get an idea of what the camera can do. There’s a lot to learn and I’ve just started.

Don bit the bullet and started experimenting with his Crown Graphic. I was the model. Since the shots are polaroids, there’s much to learn about not only manually focusing the camera, but finding the right light and figuring out how long to wait until the photograph is revealed.

He’s texting Louis about his photos.

I took this with the new camera.

Considering this camera weighs a ton and that this kind of photography is new to him, he took some pretty good shots. The challenge is that the film is expensive, yet he needs to play around with it for a while, so we’ve just accepted the fact that this first week will be about using a lot of film.

So far, I’m loving my new camera. I’ll use both of my cameras, of course, but for now, I’ll concentrate on the 77D.

And speaking of cameras, if you follow Don on Instagram, you’ve probably seen some of his Holga photos. Holgas are made in Japan. They’re plastic and were manufactured for children as a way of teaching them photography. In the years since they first appeared, they’ve become popular with photographers and now they have a huge following. The fun thing about these film cameras is that each camera is different; they have their individual quirks. There’s often vignetting around the image. Sometimes, light does funny things to the film. My camera’s pictures look different than Don’s.

We take the film to be developed at B & H and then we have the negatives digitally scanned and emailed to us. I got my first batch back yesterday and I’ll be sharing them with you off and on for the next few days.

Taken on Ninth Avenue in NYC. This guy was taking a break, sitting next to his bike. I love black and white photography, though I also shot a roll in color.

Gosh, I love film! And the funkiness of the Holga makes me happy! You never know how the shot is going to come out.

Before I close – in the garden:

I didn’t plant white coneflowers here. They’re volunteers from the big garden bed.

Photography, Holgas and the garden are full of surprises.

Happy Tuesday.

Flowers, Greenhouses & Cameras

July 15, 2018 at 8:16 am by Claudia

It stormed last night and we got a deluge. In the typical ‘extremes’ mode of this summer, when we get rain, it comes down so hard that it overwhelms the hydrangeas and the grasses in the gardens. And we’re getting more today – one to two inches. I’m happy we got the rain, of course, I wish we could have had something a little less violent.

Ah, well. Do I go outside and try to fluff the plants or let nature take its course? I’m not sure.

It was very humid yesterday, but we took an hour or so to visit my local nursery. The porch lobelia is looking a bit ragged these days and from what I read of lobelia, it starts to seriously sag come July. I also needed garden gloves. So I bought a couple of plants and two more hanging plants.

Now, I have too many plants because I can’t quite give up on the hanging lobelia yet. I’m not one to toss plants if I think they have still have signs of life. I’ll hang on to the bitter end.

Boy, was it hot inside the greenhouses!

Have I told you how much I’d like a greenhouse? I dream of a little greenhouse here on the property. I save pretty pictures of them. I wonder if I could build my own. The other day, we were in a neighboring town and a truck carrying a greenhouse drove right through the center of town. I was beside myself: Maybe I could commandeer the truck and divert it to my driveway! Maybe it was a surprise meant for me!

Alas, Don assured me it wasn’t.

Darn it.

We’re off to NYC for the day. The theme for today is cameras.

With – if it’s not raining – a little stop at the Community Garden.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
