Home is Best

monwelcome

This was the message waiting for me when we got home on Saturday. Oh, that sweet husband of mine!

The skies have been gray around here, not much sun, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying some weed yanking and weed wacking. Or whacking. I’m never sure which to use. My attempts to look it up met with frustration as it seems to be spelled both ways. Anyway, I whacked/wacked until the battery I thought was fully charged petered out. More of that battery operated elimination of weeds will occur this morning.

We went out to a late breakfast – ummm! french toast and hash browns! – and not much else happened. Except of course, the simple joy of being together. I caught up on Newsroom (my favorite series) which I can’t see in Hartford, so that I would be ready for the newest episode last night. We had corn on the cob from our favorite local farmer – the best sweet corn ever – and watched some Red Sox/Yankees action, and then the newest episodes of Breaking Bad and Newsroom. Lovely.

I’ll get some more pictures this morning – the sun has come out!

We head back to Hartford this afternoon. It’s been an all-too-short visit that I am, nonetheless, very grateful for.

By the way, the winner of a copy of Drift was Connie. Congratulations, Connie. Sorry it took me so long to reveal the winner!

Happy Monday.

A Weekend At Home

August 18, 2013 at 9:20 am by Claudia

zinnia

Home. The gardens are overgrown, weeds are everywhere. Though some plants are blooming in a rather spectacular fashion, others are fading. I’m seeing that mid-August decline that means autumn is around the corner. I planted lots of zinnias in the spring and this is the only one that has bloomed, though the others are not far behind.

I yanked a few weeds yesterday evening, but I have lots more to pull. When I asked Don during our drive home if he had weed wacked, he said no, even though I had told him all about the batteries being fully charged and ready to go before I left. Oy.

When Don pulled into the parking lot at the apartment in Hartford, I ran down to meet him and Miss Scout was in the back seat looking out the window. When I walked up to the window, she was so excited to see me that she was trembling. We had a little adventure; she rode in the elevator, pounced with joy as she explored the apartment and the three of us took a walk in the park.

Oh, how I missed her.

Isn’t she a beauty?

Today’s agenda involves lots of the aforementioned weed wacking, weeding the garden beds, and some mowing. Yay! And, like a kid home from college for the weekend, I have to do my laundry.

This is where my girl is stationed at the moment. In the ‘tunnel.’

What I’ve Been Up To

Watching my pretty flowers open. That book you see will be reviewed a week from Monday.

sunbook

Almost finished with this book. What a great writer Louise Penny is!

Enjoying my cozy little bedroom here in my home-away-from-home.

And the amazingly high ceilings.

Working. Writing little Post-It note reminders. Using my much loved Filofax to keep track of my daily rehearsal schedule. I’ve tried using the calendar on my laptop and on my iPhone. They just don’t do it for me. I like to write things down by hand, whether it’s a list of things to do, a grocery list, or appointments. Somehow the act of writing by hand helps me to remember and makes it real, not virtual.

It’s been a busy week. I had planned on going home for a couple of days, starting this evening. But my plans were foiled by our car. Now, something’s wrong with the exhaust system. Very noisy. We’re crossing our fingers that its just a missing flange but nothing can be done about it until tomorrow. Think positive thoughts for our car, okay? Don’s going to drop it off tomorrow while he goes into the city for an audition.

I’m so enjoying Netflix and the options it gives me. If you’ve read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, I highly recommend the Swedish film version of all three of the books. The American film version of the first book in the series was good but it left out some key plot points as well as one or two of the characters, which I found irritating. But the Swedish version takes its time, tells the whole story, and really holds true to the author’s vision. Excellent. I just finished watching the final episode last night. Don tells me House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey is great, so that’s next on the agenda. (He’s also enjoying Netflix. We’re converts.)

Homesick. I cried a little yesterday when I realized it was a no go for the visit home. But today promises to be busy and that helps. Tomorrow? Don’t know what the heck I’ll do. Read. Take a walk. Maybe do some sewing, but I’m not inspired yet. Maybe the creative muse will strike?

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
