A Big City, But Not Really

February 2, 2018 at 8:44 am by Claudia

In the New York is a big city, but not really category:

Yesterday, I went down to the Village (more on that later) and when I took the subway back to Times Square, I happened to be walking by the rehearsal studios on 42nd Street where I often work and where Don is working now, when I looked up and saw Ramin Karimloo, who, until recently, played Gleb in  Anastasia. We hugged each other and did some catching up and it was a lovely chance meeting – the kind that happens more often than you might imagine.

Then I got a text from Don (it was lunch time) and we arranged to meet in front of the rehearsal studios. As I saw him coming my  way, I also spotted another actor I have worked with, Michael Potts. Michael was in the production of Our Town  that I coached a few years back in Chautauqua. He’s such a gifted actor and one of the funniest people I’ve ever worked with. Anyway, I introduced him to Don and we chatted a bit. Michael is currently rehearsing The Iceman Cometh  with Denzel Washington. (Don shared an elevator with Denzel the other day.)

Then I went upstairs with Don to the break room and we shared his lunch and chatted with some of the cast of Margaritaville. After he headed back to rehearsal, I went downstairs in the elevator and as I got out in the lobby, I heard: “Claudia, I was just thinking about you and there you are!” It was one of my former students from Boston University, Annie Meeks.  Unbelievable! We haven’t seen each other in over 25 years! She told me that she was reading my Instagram feed in a restaurant two doors down and she thought to herself, “Wouldn’t it be neat if I ran into Claudia while she was in NYC?” And then she ran into me about 5 minutes later! And I was only there by chance.

Amazing day. We’re going to have lunch next time I’m in town.

I also worked with Christy and a couple of other actors in Anastasia, which is always delightful.

My reason for going down to the Village was to finally see this bookstore, Three Lives and Co.

I wasn’t disappointed. It’s absolutely charming, a little gem. It’s the kind of place where books are everywhere, with beautiful wood bookcases and counters and worn wood floors, and where there are conversations about books going on all the time.

I was smitten.

I fell in love and I’ll be back. Of course, I bought three books, which I need like a hole in the head, but I couldn’t resist.

Today, I’m headed back home, though I’d love to stay a bit longer. However, the temps and wind chills are going to be low today and tonight and for most of the next week, so I have to be home to do the drips from the faucet and make sure everything is okay.

Happy Friday.

Friends and Films

January 9, 2018 at 9:47 am by Claudia

A jungle of green.

I wouldn’t have it any other way. Hey, it’s will be positively balmy today as the temperature hits the mid-thirties! I won’t know what to do with myself. Wear shorts? Go for a swim?

We had the most marvelous time with our friends Trish and Colin yesterday. We gathered at Rick and Doug’s home for lunch and great, great conversation. Before we knew it, five hours had passed. All the while, snowflakes were slowly falling and deer were feeding on the hill behind their house and it was magical.

Don took this photo of Trish and me. She is very tiny and full of energy. She has so many wonderful stories about a life spent in the theater, working in England, her native Australia and here in the States. Her husband Colin is also a terrific raconteur and between them, we were entranced. Don has worked with both Colin and Trish.

Warning: If you don’t want to read my opinion on a film you may not have seen yet, stop here!

We came home and had some dinner and then watched Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. We are bucking the crowd on this one: we didn’t like it. We were really looking forward to it as we’re both fans of Frances McDormand. But the script was badly written and it was badly directed. It’s what I am calling a Coen Brothers Wannabe. Since we, and Don especially, love the Coen brothers, we were sure we’d love the film. But, the more we talked about it afterwards, the more examples we came up with where the scenes and dialogue were shaped – actually, contrived – to further a weak story line that left too many things unexplained and veered all over the place. I’m all for some ambiguity at times, but this wasn’t ambiguity, it was just poor writing. Frances McDormand was okay. It’s the kind of role she can do well. Sam Rockwell was very good; his was the most effective characterization in the movie and, given the script’s deficiencies, he worked wonders. We accepted that it was rather stylized and were willing to go with it but, in the end, it was hard to like any of the characters and we just felt manipulated. It seems to be the flavor of the moment, but I’m darned if I can figure out why.

We feel much the same way about Call Me by Your Name, which elicited yet another long conversation after the end of the film where we kept coming up with contrivances that were glaringly obvious and never rang true, along with many moments in the script that were never explained and never followed up on.

When the viewer has to do a lot of work to try to make disparate elements of a film come together to make some sort of sense, the film has failed.

Loved, loved Get Out. I can’t say enough about that film. Jordan Peele is brilliant.

We have The Shape of Water  on the docket for tonight and Mudbound  slated for tomorrow. Ahead: I, Tonya, Lady Bird, and The Darkest Hour.

We’re having fun watching all these movies and want to finish up in time for Don to vote.

Thank goodness it’s warmer outside!

Don wants me to keep the tree up another day. Okay!

Happy Tuesday.

Basking

December 29, 2017 at 9:51 am by Claudia

I’m glad I love my little cottage because it’s so cold out there, I don’t want to leave it! I know that many of you are also living in these Arctic-like temps, so cold for a December. My weather app tells me this will be going on through next Wednesday (!) and then it will start to warm up. It’s all relative, of course, because the forecast for the ‘warm up’ is still very cold!

We braved the weather last night to meet Rick and Doug at a local Thai restaurant. I’m so glad they’re here. We have great conversations that include lots of laughter. What a blessing their presence has been in our lives.

The paperwhites are blooming and the scent is heavenly. Since the bulb is right next to my blogging chair, I get tantalizing whiffs of the scent from time to time. I bought this particular bulb at Whole Foods right before Christmas. It was an impulse buy. I’m so glad I went for it.

The new monstera leaves are slowly unfurling. They take their time, as does the new growth on the ZZ plant. I like that, as I get the pleasure of watching the unveiling progress from day to day.

I’m feeling rather ‘my cup runneth over-y’ today. It’s something about being safely ensconced in our cottage, seeing the various shades of green in the house plants, having a husband who makes my first cup of coffee and brings it to me in the den (I make our second cup), having close friends nearby (after so many years of living here) – a whole host of blessings.

We’ve been through years that were so tough we couldn’t wait for the new year This year, I’m basking in our good fortune and sending up a prayer that 2018 is a blessing for everyone, everywhere.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
