Outside

July 27, 2022 at 8:27 am by Claudia

Yesterday was the first day without excess heat and humidity in a long time, so we took advantage of it by mowing the front lawn and the secret garden. Short-lived, since the heat and humidity will be back all too soon. But boy, was it a beautiful day!

That umbrella is new. Don purchased the umbrella/stand to protect him from the sun when he works at the Farmer’s Market. The market is in a parking lot and there is no shelter or shade. It took us a while to realize we could use it at home, too!

It’s on the funky patio.

Don loves to sit out there and play his guitar, so the addition of the umbrella is perfect for him. I love the way it looks from the street.

We sat on the porch after mowing and felt gratitude for our house and our beautiful property. The bones were there, but the gardens and the patio are all us. Basically, everything that is blooming, filling the borders, defining spaces – that’s our work over 16 years of actively gardening here. It’s very satisfying.

Then we took a nap. Of course.

We’re going to start in on emptying our storage space. We’ll put on our ‘ruthless’ hats and start to take anything we don’t want to the recycling center/dump. They’ve raised our rental by $40/month again – what a rip off! Anyway, that’s it. Time to get rid of everything. It will begin today.

I received my other bjd doll – a companion for Wren – and I’ll share her with you tomorrow. I try to refrain from overwhelming you with dolls, as I know this is a relatively new addition to the blog and not everyone gets it.

Edited to add: Mere also tested positive for Covid.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Sunsets, Trees, & Flowers

July 26, 2022 at 8:30 am by Claudia

Last night.

This morning. The David phlox are blooming. They have a pretty heavenly scent.

We’re definitely at peak garden level. After this, everything will start to fade away. Slowly, but it will happen. That makes me feel sad. It goes so quickly, doesn’t it? And once I hit August, I’m less apt to weed or clean out the beds.

I start work on one show in August and another in September, so my gardening time will be limited. The second production is a musical version of A Man of No Importance. It was originally a movie, starring the great Albert Finney and it’s one of my favorites. It’s being done at Classic Stage in NYC and will star Jim Parsons – which is why I’m a part of it. He recommended me and after some negotiations, I think all is set to go. I’ve zoomed with the Director, chatted with the new Artistic Director and done some research. Their budget is limited, so my days of work will also be limited.  In the ‘small world’ category, the music and lyrics are by Lynn Ahrens and Steven Flaherty who wrote the glorious music for Anastasia. So, Jane Eyre  in August and into the beginning of September, and A Man of No Importance  in September and October.

Finished tree puzzle. This one was difficult, but it’s so beautiful that it was worth it.

Stay safe.

Happy Tuesday.

Flowers and Clothes

July 23, 2022 at 8:44 am by Claudia

It’s so beautiful and cool outside this morning that you’d never know the temperature is going to reach 95° today. That means the heat index will be well over 100°. Same for tomorrow. Lately, I’ve had to grab some time on the porch early in the morning or not at all (except for the endless watering that has to happen during this heat wave.)

As I sat on the porch, I had a wave of gratitude for our property. From my perch on the glider, I saw all the flowers on our porch and beyond that, so many beautiful shades of green. A chipmunk ran by my feet, completely surprised by my presence. I heard a mourning dove and a carolina wren. Yesterday, I saw three goldfinches chasing each other in and out of our bushes.

The rose of sharon has started blooming. I’m so thrilled. A few years back, I brought a tiny cutting home, courtesy of my friend Noble.  Actually there were two cuttings. One of the bushes is much smaller than the other, but in time, it will bloom, too.

I haven’t ordered clothes for the girls in a while, but when I discovered a seamstress in California who makes affordable Blythe clothes, I ordered two summer dresses. They came yesterday.

Holly graciously offered to model one of the dresses.

Isn’t it gorgeous? The fabric on the bodice is a peach polka dot, but it’s hard to see in this photo. I’m crazy about the fabric combination.

I have to say – and don’t tell anyone else – that Holly may be the most photogenic of my girls.

Ssshhhh!

In other news, the doll that is coming to me from Ukraine, recently diverted to Denver CO for some reason, is at my local post office and is expected to be delivered today. I have to sign for it. If it isn’t out with the carrier, I’ll drive over and get the package in person.

The Farmer’s Market was cancelled for today as it’s going to be dangerously hot outside.

A quick story: When I realized that Holly was about to be delivered, I finally confessed to Don that I had three dolls coming to our mailbox in the next several days. Granted, both Holly and the doll from Ukraine were inexpensive, and I’d ordered the companion doll for Wren a few months back, but I was a bit nervous about telling him.

His response: “Great! That means more joy is coming to our house!”

I don’t deserve him, but I’m eternally grateful for him.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
