Natural Beauty

September 13, 2011 at 7:21 am by Claudia

The garden is past its prime. I have a few zinnias coming up; the seeds were planted a little late because of my surgery. Only one has flowered so far.

So I craved and needed some flowers for my living room. Lately, the flowers I’ve seen for sale looked too saturated, as if someone had gone into a photo editing program and set the ‘color saturation’ dial a little too high. I’m sure these flowers were all dyed. And they were expensive. I even considered driving to Trader Joe’s for cheap, pretty flowers. However, since the nearest Trader Joe’s is an hour away, the price of gas would defeat my purpose.

Enter the dreaded Walmart. Five dollars.

You can’t beat the price.

A big sigh, shoulders drop….fresh flowers make me happy.

Another form of natural beauty:

From our downed sugar maple limb. The grain is so beautiful.

Every tree tells a story.

I may have to keep these.

In Need of Sunshine

September 6, 2011 at 5:44 pm by Claudia

Rain, rain, rain. It seems to be raining endlessly here, which is bad news for the already swollen rivers  and for those who are still coping with flood damage from Hurricane Irene. So many people in our area have lost so much. One of our friends still does not have power. Another has 3 feet of water in his house. Enough already, please?

I took this photo the other day – you know fall is on the way when the Sedum Autumn Joy starts turning pink. Such gentle splashes of pink all over the garden.

This vine is growing in our back forty. Does anyone know what it is? The leaves are star-shaped with spiky white flowers.

Growing all over the edges of our property – and everywhere else on my travels around the neighborhood.

The day after the hurricane I noticed this spectacular spider web. It’s stretched between two trees in our overgrown back forty. Amazing, isn’t it?

Mom is still in the rehabilitation facility. She is barely speaking to anyone – she says about 10 words to my Dad and my sister and then sends them home. I call her every day and lately I get about 30 seconds of phone time before she cuts me off. She is withdrawing from everyone. She wants to die and she says it fairly often. I wonder if this is her way of pushing us away so she can transition. I don’t know. I only know that my father is heartbroken and that my mom is desperately unhappy and determined to remain that way and that there is nothing but sadness permeating everything.

A little sunshine might help.

Garden Art

September 1, 2011 at 12:00 am by Claudia

In the ‘if you have lemons make lemonade’ vein, the broken birdbath has become garden art. The other half will go in the garden bed on the side of the house.

Considering that the huge limb from the maple fell on all my barrels full of impatiens, they look surprisingly good:

I will figure out some artistic thing to do with the base of the birdbath. I really want to get a new birdbath because my little birdies really love taking a dip, especially the catbirds.

And here are all the branches and limbs that Don and I will have to haul up into the woods.

Looks like fun, doesn’t it? Suddenly it’s looking like autumn here with all the leaves on the ground courtesy of Hurricane Irene. This has not been a good summer for me. That’s an understatement. So, though I will miss the warm temps and shorts and the beauty of summer…I’m ready to move on.

Today, we are on our way to Boston for the Red Sox vs. Yankees game! If you remember, the tickets were my birthday present for Don.  We are so in need of a fun day away from all the stress in our lives. I’ll take lots of pictures, of course.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
