Two Views and a Gift

November 6, 2014 at 8:08 am by Claudia

view of side table

Awake at 5 AM.

In the early morning lamplight – a view of the tabletop next to my blogging chair.

How do I manage to cram so much onto such a small space? You’ll see: at least two eyeglass cases; notebooks; pieces of paper with handwritten notes to myself; earbuds; coffee mug full of hot Peet’s French Roast; my iPhone; a piece of Hull pottery full of pens, pencils and a nail file; my pencil case in a piece of fifties-era pottery; the vintage lamp.

view of coffee table

And a view of the coffee table in the den: a basket full of reading material, catalogs, new television warranties, etc.; the remotes, two coffee table books, Collected (more on this book later) and Undecorate (more on this later in the post); a wooden piece that Don gave me; my Kindle, where I’m currently reading a wonderful book that I’ll review next week; a spiritual book I find inspiring; and Michael Connelly’s newest (yes I bought it) The Burning Room.

And Scout, in her tunnel position.

Will there be any room for Don’s things? No. But he tends to pile his stuff on the coffee table in the living room. So it all works out. I just have to rearrange things in the evening so that we can put our feet up on the coffee table.

The other day I picked up a package sent to me by Barbara, a lovely reader of this blog. She had written me to say she wanted to send me some miniatures. Of course, I said.

The box was heavy.

Inside? A treasure trove of wonderful gifts, most of them completely unexpected. I kept gasping as I opened each beautifully wrapped package. Let me share them with you.

barbara-gift1

Paris/Eiffel Tower Magnets, a Kelly Rae Roberts “Create” ornament, a beautiful red leather journal with a bird design, and the Old Farmer’s Almanac 2015 calendar.

barbara-gift2

A beautiful handwoven scarf and a pair of gloves. How did Barbara know that my winter gloves are in terrible shape?

barbara-gift3

A lovely bracelet, with charms representing Wellness, Prosperity, and Happiness. Perfect. I feel blessed.

barbara-gift4

Miniatures and beautiful card stock.

barbara-gift5

More miniatures. Oh, my heavens!

barbara-gift6

And a copy of Undecorate along with a beautiful card. I wrote about Undecorate on this blog a few years ago. I loved the whole concept of the book: real people living real lives whose rooms reflect their personalities. Rooms that don’t look impossibly perfect. I spent a long time in the bookstore thumbing through the pages, and though I wanted my very own copy, I never did get one. Just recently, when I was at the Strand in NYC, I saw it again and was very tempted, but I had already bought some books. So I held off. Again.

But here it is – from Barbara.

Honestly, and I’m not saying this with any sense of false modesty, I don’t know what I did to deserve this. Time and again, I am amazed and humbled by the generosity of this blog’s readers. Blown away would be an even better way to put it. I’ve been so blessed by all of you; via comments and emails and the very fact that you stop in to share some time with me, with unexpected gifts from the heart, by your loving support when I need it most.

This blog has been so much more than a daily journal. It has opened up a whole world to me that I certainly wouldn’t have known otherwise. It has brought all of you into my life. What a blessing you are.

I wrote Barbara, of course, but I want to say it here, as well. Thank you.

I told Barbara that I’m thinking of it as my first birthday present, though the actual day isn’t until two weeks from tomorrow. (And even though I received it in late October, I’m considering Teresa’s gift of the egg cup to be a birthday present, too.)  I’m going to make November my Birthday Month.

On a very sad note – if you missed my post about the death of dear Judy Clark’s husband, John, please scroll down one post. He died yesterday after a valiant and brave battle with cancer.

Happy Thursday.

New: Television, Catalog, Egg Cup

October 31, 2014 at 8:42 am by Claudia

After doing my research like a good girl and responsible consumer, I headed over to Best Buy on Wednesday. I had narrowed down my choices to either Samsung or Sony Bravia. The prices were comparable. After looking at them and sending pictures to Don, I spoke to the salesman and asked which one he would recommend. (I kept quiet about the one I thought had the better picture.) Sure enough, he recommended the Sony, which to me, had a significantly better picture. So, that’s what I bought. (Both were Smart TVs, which means, for us, that we can get Netflix on a big screen.)

sony 1

Ain’t she purty? Our older flat screen, gosh it must have been about 8 years old, was so much heavier, so heavy that I have to wait for Don to get back home before I can move it out of the den. This set is almost too lightweight. It’s also a 40″ screen; the old one was 32″.

I figured out how to connect all the cables and wires and managed to get through all the prompts on the screen and….voilà! By the time the World Series started, I was nestled into the sofa texting Don about how great the picture was. (Not happy about the results of the World Series. Not happy at all.)

That cabinet is one I bought at auction for $5.00. It was the perfect size for our den, I brought it home and cleaned it up, repainted and ‘aged’ it, added some glass knobs and now it holds this stuff:

sony 2

Including a VCR that we never use anymore. Perhaps I should remove it someday. And yes, you see cords on the right. Ultimately, I don’t care about that sort of thing. It’s life. We live (and often work) here. If you live in the 21st century, cords are going to be everywhere, and trying to deny their existence is silly – at least to me. It’s the kind of thing I just don’t have the energy to care about.

Okay. I went off onto a slight tangent there.

B&H

Speaking of tech and cords, the new B&H Photo Video catalog arrived yesterday. It weighs a ton. B&H is an incredible store in Manhattan that I’ve written about before. It’s where I buy my cameras and probably where I would buy my television if I lived in the city. Since I’ve purchased items there, they send me this mammoth catalog every year. And just for a moment, I pretend I’m a professional photographer, since they seem to think I am. It’s really fun to look through.

Changing subjects: Teresa, a loyal reader of this blog, sent me a package. I picked it up from the post office box on Monday. Let’s see what was inside.

Oh my! Three packets of Emergen-C – always needed in this household (I wish I could send some to Don right now), some Sweet and Spicy herbal tea (there were two bags, but I’ve already had a cup – delicious), a lovely note, and this egg cup which has stolen my heart.

Look at that adorable face!

It’s on the tall side and I’m totally smitten. I also think it was hand painted.

In 1958. Thank you, LH. You did a great job.

And thank you, sweet Teresa, for this lovely gift. Another egg cup that has a wonderful story. You know how much I love that. Every decorative item in a house should have a story and not a story about how a decorator found it. It should be a story of love and friends and things longed for, discovered, saved for, collected over time, received as presents from caring friends, of books well-read and thumbed through, of the lovingly well-worn, of things that bring one joy.

And on and on I could go.

It got cold last night. The leaves are falling from the catalpa, a sure sign that the temps were freezing overnight. Time to bring the impatiens in for the winter. Say it ain’t so!

New post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page.

Happy Friday.

Back Home, Gifts and Scout

September 12, 2014 at 8:29 am by Claudia

Left the house at 9:30 am. Pulled up in the driveway at 7:15 pm, with Scout’s face visible in the window as she kept one eye pealed for the car from her “Where’s Mom?” perch on the loveseat. Thank goodness for my neighbor who cheerfully dropped by a couple of times to let her outside. I’d left food out in her dish, which my neighbor informed me had been ‘nosed’ by Miss Scout to a spot under the kitchen island.

That scamp.

I asked my neighbor to please put the food back in its original position on the rug. When I got home to an ecstatic, jumpy, pouncey Scout, I discovered she’d eaten it all. Good girl!

We had a loving reunion with lots of “I missed you!” and “What a good girl you were!” and then it was time for more food. For Scout, first.

Then I ordered a pizza. Just for me. It was 8 pm and I was starving.

Scout was like a hyped-up little kid for the next 3 hours until she finally crashed.

I’ve been in Efficient Mode for a few days now, but I think today I’m going to be in Lay Low Mode. Especially since I woke up at 5:30.

Nevertheless, I have to finish Act Three of Hamlet. I’m on a schedule. Here’s the current view of the kitchen table:

FRIDAY Current state of kitchen table

Filled with research books and scripts and notes for our taxes and books due back at the library and some mail.

Attractive, isn’t it? And not at all pin-worthy.

I want to share a few surprises that have arrived in my mailbox lately – all from generous and lovely readers of this blog.

FRIDAY crochet

Tammy sent me this lovely crocheted mat. I love, love the colors, which are not quite true in this photo. That’s because it’s early in the morning here and the lights are on. The bookmark was also in the package – those are pressed flowers. Thank you so much, Tammy!

Yesterday I stopped off at the post office to mail something and check the contents of my post office box. Whoo hoo! There were three packages waiting for me. One was a book for a future review.

FRIDAY eggcups

One was a box that contained these. Oh my! Generous reader Sandra sent these vintage egg cups that are also salt and pepper shakers. Sandra said that one of the things she loved about my egg cup collection is that each one of them has a story. Then she went on to say that this set wouldn’t have a wonderful story like the others, but that they were ‘sent fondly.’ Hold on there, Sandra! They do have a wonderful story: they were sent to me by you. You discovered them at an estate sale and you took the time to package them up, along with a lovely note, and send them to me.

I’d say that’s a pretty neat story. Thank you, Sandra!

And the other box contained these:

FRIDAY minis

Oh my! Lovely reader Lee sent me these minis. They were given to the attendees of a NAME convention (National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts.) That’s a beautiful tray with letters, a letter opener, pen and ink, books, and a cup of tea on a doily. And a tin of Earl Grey. Beautifully done. Yes, my friends, it will definitely be going in the dollhouse, which has been untouched for a while now. That happens every summer, as my thoughts turn to gardening and the great outdoors. Soon enough, I will be finding myself back in the thick of it.

Thank you, Lee!

I am continually amazed by the thoughtful and generous gifts that are sent to me by you, my readers and friends. I don’t think I am nearly that thoughtful or generous, to be perfectly honest. I wish I was more like you. You set the bar pretty high, my friends.

Bless your hearts!

A new post with some interesting links is up at Just Let Me Finish This Page.

Adding to The List: Forgot about Hilary Swank in P.S. I Love You (movie) and Robert Sean Leonard in Pygmalion. Oops!

Oh, and if you’re occasionally not getting a post in your email, it most likely has to do with your email provider and there’s really not a thing I can do about it. I subscribe to this blog through AOL, Gmail, and Yahoo and I’ve been getting every post. Remember: you can bookmark the site and visit it directly. You know that I post every day.

And one more thing: I’m getting a lot of spam today – somehow it’s getting past my filter, so for the time being I am moderating comments.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
