Day Eighty-Five

June 6, 2020 at 9:31 am by Claudia

Wild Roses – their scent is everywhere this morning.

Nature stories, all of which happened this morning:

• The other day I noticed that one of the ‘entrances’ that Henry used to go under the shed no longer had leaves blocking the opening. Some little creature had been cleaning up. I showed it to Don and said ‘Let’s keep an eye out.’ When one groundhog vacates his home, another often moves in. This morning, Don opened the door to make his trek up to the back forty to see the sun rise and there, on the ramp of the shed was a groundhog. Both of them were startled and the groundhog ran under the shed. When I got up Don told me about his encounter, saying it was a big, fat groundhog. Later, as I was sipping coffee, Don called out to me to look out the window and there was the groundhog, eating the grass. At one point he got on his hind legs to munch on some plants (thankfully, by the shed instead of in my garden, but it’s clearly time to keep a vigilant eye out for mischief.) He was last seen on the lilac side of the lawn. We’re pretty sure this isn’t Henry as he seemed a bit too spry. We’re not saying that definitively, but I think Henry would have made an appearance before now. This guy might be our new tenant. I also saw a deer running through the woods beyond the shed.

• Don went for a walk and after I finished what I was reading, I went out to the front porch to sit for a bit on the glider. I heard a loud whirring noise, couldn’t figure out what it was, looked up, and there was a hummingbird dining on my hanging plant.

• I got up, walked over to the garden and a big fat bumblebee was dining on the catmint. One of the biggest I’ve ever seen.

• Don came back. I made our second cup of coffee. We sat on the sofa in the living room. Don said that he saw something running up on the back forty. Maybe it was a cat? A fox? I got up to look, and saw a flash of something running – maybe a dog? If so, it was just a bit bigger than Scoutie had been. I went outside to the Secret Garden to get a peek, thinking if it was dog, it might need rescuing. I saw a large deer standing there placidly, staring at me. That was when I realized that the little animal running was a very young fawn. The fawn was running back and forth, very fast, just like a puppy does. We’d see it tear around a corner, disappear, then switch directions. Don used the word ‘gamboling.’ It was extraordinary. I’ve seen lots of young deer around here, but I’ve never seen one that young playing like that, gleefully running back and forth while Mom waited nearby. Oh my heavens, it just made my day. I’ll treasure that image for a long time.

I am always appreciative of where we live but never more so than on a morning like this. It’s going to be hot and humid later today, but this morning has been a gift.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Day Sixty-Four

May 16, 2020 at 9:30 am by Claudia

All they needed were a couple of days of warmth and sunshine. They’re late this year, but thank goodness, they’re here.

In the “What next?” category, we had a tornado warning last night and it was for our little corner of the Hudson Valley. We saw it flash on the television screen, so we got up, grabbed a flashlight and Don went outside and opened the cellar door just in case. Thankfully, nothing happened. We had a tornado watch for the rest of the evening. Yesterday’s temperature reached 83 and it was very, very humid, so I’m not surprised that we had severe thunderstorms all over the Hudson Valley, Connecticut, and western Massachusetts.

It’s all rather crazy: two weeks ago, the temperature reached 80 degrees, within a few days we were dealing with several days of frost and freeze warnings, then within a day of the cold leaving, we were in the eighties with a tornado warning.

As I said to Don, “What’s next? Locusts?”

Today is lovely. At the moment, the sun is shining. Don is going to work on some projects outside. I am going to plant in the big garden bed. Later, we have to drive to the grocery store for a pick up and then we’ll be back here disinfecting everything.

It’s so green and lush out there right now!

By the way, it pains me to write this, but I think Henry is no longer with us. We’ve not seen him and the main entrance he uses to go under the shed is full of leaves that have never been disturbed. I hope and pray I am wrong, but I’m already mourning him. Unlike other summers, I haven’t seen a groundhog near my garden bed (crossing fingers that I don’t have to put up fencing.) Henry never disturbed the bed, but other little scamps did. I’m also not seeing any bunnies.

If you have indeed left us, Henry, we thank you for your company all these years. You are a part of our family forever.

Happy Saturday.

Morning Walk & Henry

August 12, 2019 at 10:10 am by Claudia

I woke up early today. It was still dark outside. I actually like it that way – there’s something lovely about the quiet and the dark. Add in some coffee and a good book and you’ve got the perfect way to start the day. Around 7 am, we went for a morning walk. It’s so much cooler in the mornings lately, the air feels fresh and brisk. A very nice way to start the day.

Then we came back and made our second cup of coffee. And we saw this:

Our boy Henry. We don’t see him very often, so it’s a big deal when we do. He has more gray hair and he’s a bit heavier. (Same.) Anyway, we were thrilled to see him. I ran for a camera and tried to take some photos with my telephoto lens from inside the kitchen.

We really love Henry and think of him as one of our babies. He’s been around here as long as we have, most likely even longer than that. We’ll have been here 14 years at the end of this month.

Anyway, he has a pretty good life: a great shelter under the shed – and the shed foundation is just fine, by the way – human beings who love him and let him be, lots of grass to eat. We’re just so delighted when we catch a glimpse of him.

Did anyone watch The African Queen  last night on TCM? Neither of us had seen it for years, so it was like watching it for the first time. What a great movie, with stellar performances from Bogart and Hepburn!

I’m still completely engrossed in The Overstory. I have a stack of books waiting for me, as well, not to mention Louise Penny’s newest, which is being published on August 27th.

Other than that, Don had a great day taking portraits yesterday. He worked at two venues, so it made for a long, but very satisfying, day.

Today? Grocery shopping. Well, it must be done, right? But the extra treat will be fresh sweet corn from our favorite farm stand (the same place where I buy plants for the garden.) I can hardly wait!

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
