And So It Continues

January 4, 2017 at 8:20 am by Claudia

Yes, I know. Another shot of the apartment. That’s all I’ve got for you, my friends. It is gray, cold, rainy, cold, gray – and getting outdoor shots of Hartford is decidedly unappealing. After rehearsal, I quickly walk back to the apartment building and disappear inside. I emerge again in the morning to go to – you guessed it – rehearsal. And the cycle continues.

We had our first complete run-through yesterday. The choreographer has arrived, as well, so the actors are having a great time dancing up a storm – especially in the ‘Bollywood’ number, which I can’t wait to see. The last day of rehearsals in the rehearsal room is Friday. Then it’s on to the theater. Boy, this rehearsal process has been fast!

Between the stage manager’s puppy and my friend Noble’s dog, Petey, I’ve been getting some quality time with adorable animals. Last night I got to meet Huckleberry, the stage manager’s dog. Both Huckleberry and Petey are adorable and understandably doted upon. Tina (Noble’s wife) took Petey back home on Monday. He will be missed! (Tina and Noble are neighbors of ours back home and Tina is a frequent commenter on this blog.) This apartment building always has a lot of dogs and seeing Huckleberry and Petey brings back memories of my time here with Scout. Good memories, but bittersweet, as well.

More flowers from Trader Joe’s. The flowers in the vase on the coffee table have been going strong for  two and a half weeks, but a petal or two has been dropping to the floor, so I had to have backups on hand.

I’m in the midst of Believing the Lie  by Elizabeth George – 200 pages into a 600 page mystery. It’s excellent – George is brilliant with plot and her character studies are incredibly detailed and rich.

Since what I’m up to is more of the same, tell me what you’re up to now that the new year is here.

Happy Wednesday.

Sofa or Couch?

January 1, 2017 at 9:50 am by Claudia

I’ve already screwed up and labeled this photo with 12/31 as the date.

It will take a while. New month, new year. (I’ve never be enamored of odd-numbered years.) I was born in an even-numbered year, I graduated from high school, college, and graduate school in even-numbered years. I met Don in an even-numbered year. I even married him in an even-numbered year. None of this was done with that in mind, but it does present a pattern, doesn’t it?

Yesterday, I got a text in the morning from the company manager saying she had found my sofa. By that, I mean the sofa that was in this apartment last year. She recognized it because I’d sent her a photo of it. (The rewards of blogging.) She happened to be in an apartment which had just been vacated by an actor in A Christmas Carol  when she saw it. Later in the day, after I’d come back from rehearsal, she and her assistant took me to the apartment to ‘identify’ it.

Yep, that’s it! And, bless their hearts, after a long day for both of them, they switched out the sofas. Now, here’s the deal: it’s also squishy and missing any sort of support. It’s better than the other sofa, but I’m thinking that I’m going to have to shove a piece of wood under a cushion. I’ll get around it.

But doesn’t it look better than that old dark brown faux-leather sofa? It has a slightly smaller footprint, as well. And it lightens up the room. So I’m very happy. The chairs are staying as well, which makes for an intimate little seating area.

Do you say sofa or couch? I grew up saying ‘couch’ but I now say ‘sofa.’ Sort of like I grew up saying ‘pop’ and now I say ‘soda.’

Chairs, I might add, that were purchased a couple of years ago for Kevin Bacon’s dressing room when he was here starring in Rear Window. I didn’t know that little bit of information until yesterday.

It’s looking very nice in here and I’m enjoying what Don labels my “Mary Tyler Moore Life.” We were laughing last night about the fact that there is absolutely no wall space at home on which to hang my quilts. So the only chance I have to see them on display is when I come to my pied-à-terre in Hartford.

This is the first time I’ve been in Hartford on New Year’s Eve. They celebrate by having fireworks in the park at 6 pm and again at 12 am. I watched the 6 pm display from a window in the hallway of the apartment building and they were fabulous! Really beautiful. Bravo Hartford! (I heard the second round as I read in bed, and thankfully, I went to sleep before they had even finished.)

Today, more rehearsal and a run-through. Darko has accomplished so much in two weeks, it’s mind-boggling. It’s going to be a very funny show.

Then a day off tomorrow, with errands to run and laundry to do.

Happy New Year.

Happy Sunday.

Home Away From Home

December 28, 2016 at 9:53 am by Claudia

I’ve always liked these apartments. There’s plenty of room for one person. The ceilings are high, the walls are white and bright, the kitchen is equipped with everything I need (including a working dishwasher, which I don’t have at home) and Company Management is extremely accommodating and helpful.

Heck, the apartment is three to four times the size of some of the studio apartments I rented over the years. It’s positively spacious. Believe me when I say that I know  small. I’m always amused when I read blog posts about ‘cottages’ which are really large houses, or small apartments that have a separate bedroom, kitchen and walk-in closets. There was a time when an apartment that size would have been nirvana for me! It’s all relative, of course. If you’ve downsized from something larger, your new space will seem small. Anyway, all this is to say that I appreciate this space provided by the theater and feel perfectly comfortable here.

A little tour with some commentary on things I’ve added:

This is the hallway. The apartment door is at the end. The bathroom is on the left, the bedroom on the right. The floors used to be carpeted, but they changed them out to laminated wood a few years back. I like the look of them, though when Scout was here with me I had to put rugs down so she wouldn’t slip.

The kitchen counter. Some of the apartments have stools on the other side of the counter because there is a nice overhang. The table and chairs are new to this space. There used to be a round table and some mid-century looking chairs that had seen better days. A nice improvement.

You’e seen the quilt before. The Christmas Tree will remain on the table through Saturday.

The desk and the weird hooks hanging high up on the wall. They’ve turned out to be quite handy for hanging the wreaths. I’m contemplating what to do with them when the wreaths come down at the end of the week. The little table on the right holds my Bose speaker and my new on-the-road Canon printer. I bought a USB cord and now it’s working perfectly.

I use the McCoy planter to hold all my charging cords. When did life become so complicated?

The living room. The quilt on the wall is the newest addition to the space. I made it when we were living in California and the fabrics used are batiks. I’m partial to that orange and, as must be clear by now, I like purple.

Amazing that the bark cloth remnant fits the top of the coffee table so perfectly. Who would have thought? Since all the tables are black, I used some fabric to break things up. I also grabbed that pillow from our bedroom at home (Don never puts them on the bed when I’m away, so he won’t miss it) to add some color to that big, brown sofa.

This little lamp I bought at Target is rather small. When I get back home, it will go on Don’s desk. So I used some books to give it some height. That’s another fabric scrap on the black table. Looking at it in this photo, I think I should give it a pass with the iron!

The bedroom is too dark to photograph, but this quilt is on the bed:

Yes, it’s a bit of a hodgepodge, but these touches make a basically blank space a home-away-from-home. I’m fortunate, I know, that I can load the car up with all of this stuff and drive to Hartford. But I did the same thing when I worked in San Diego for 10 weeks at a time (we were living in the Northeast.) I packed three big boxes with things I knew would brighten up the apartment space and make it mine and sent them out to California. It’s worth it for me. When I walk in the door after a day of rehearsal, I feel I’ve come home. It’s a temporary home, of course, but making a little nest makes a huge difference in the quality of my life on the road.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
