Henry?

April 9, 2018 at 9:44 am by Claudia

I moseyed across the street the other day to take a picture of the creek that is just behind my neighbor’s property. We have two rivers within a few hundred feet of the cottage – one is a large river that flows north (it really does!) and this creek is an offshoot of it.

If you traveled down the creek for a few hundred more feet, you would find the property owned by the guy who is trying to put in a glamping resort. You see how close it is to us. That whole thing is still being reviewed, and while I remain hopeful, I fear business – as it always seems to do here – will win out.

Seen under my car, then darting here and there before he/she ran off. As I said on Instagram, he seemed a bit spry for Henry, but I was watching through the living room window and I couldn’t get a good enough look to see if it was indeed our friend. When he took off, he ran to the shed, scooted along the outside wall – all things that Henry does – but then proceeded to walk past the opening to his den.

So the jury is still out. Nevertheless, I was so happy to see a critter here. This isn’t the easiest time for him as this dang cold has kept grass and weeds from growing, and that’s what he dines on. Groundhogs are vegetarians.

He does look a little gray around his muzzle. So maybe it is  Henry. Every year he’s still with us is a blessing.

Don is headed home today and I’ll pick him up early this afternoon. Yay! It’s been two weeks since we’ve seen each other in the flesh.

Happy Monday.

Creature Love

October 6, 2017 at 9:24 am by Claudia

I’m feeling more energetic this morning and for that I’m grateful. It’s a beautiful autumn day and  the sun is shining and I just found out we don’t owe anything on our taxes and that we are getting a modest refund and my morning FaceTime with my husband was great and my Peet’s is making me happy and it’s all good.

How’s that for a run-on sentence?

Lately, I’ve seen Henry chomping down on the grass right by the Funky Patio, which is pretty close to the house. Brave for that timid boy!  I saw him yesterday and because the windows were closed, he couldn’t hear the click of my camera and run away as he usually does.

There he is, that sweet boy.

Then, to make it even more perfect (can you have degrees of perfect?) my lonesome dove landed on the birdbath.

And then, in the ultra degree of perfect, the monarch butterfly that I saw the day of my dental work (I took that as a good sign) appeared over in the chicken wire fence garden.

For a brief moment, all three creatures were within a few feet of each other. Then Henry heard something and ran back to his lair. But for that moment, my Creature Love boxes were all ticked.

Happy Claudia.

It’s such a lovely day today, that I might take a little drive northwards. We’ll see. Or I might go to our local antique barn. Hmmm. What to do?

Happy Friday.

New York, Flowers, Leaves & Henry

September 19, 2017 at 10:14 am by Claudia

I snapped this very quickly yesterday morning as I made my way to my car and a trip to the city. Two beauties! Today, as I look out my kitchen window, I see another bloom. They started blooming very late, but I must say that lateness has turned into a blessing. Beautiful new flowers every day as I see everything else slowly fading. And falling. I can’t tell you how many leaves there are on the ground. Leaves that I have to rake today.

I had a very good day yesterday coaching dialects on a production of Shadowlands, which is a play based on the unexpected meeting and marriage of C. S. Lewis and Joy Gresham. It’s a lovely play and the cast is terrific. I’ll probably go in again later in the week to finish some work with the actress playing Joy. My rehearsal was only a few city blocks from Don’s. Don is rehearsing in the same studios where Anastasia  rehearsed and where I’ve worked more times than I can count on various productions – it’s perfect for musical theater because of the large rehearsal rooms.

I had no idea when he was going to be released and as I walked out of the rehearsal studio at around 4 pm, heading toward the bus terminal, I texted him. Turns out he was finished and just about to leave, so we met up on 42nd Street and had a quick bite to eat together. After all these years, when we see each other in the course of a work day, in a place other than our home, we’re surprised and delighted. Then I headed for the bus (managed to catch one just about to leave) and Don headed for his bus.

And there we are.

Today I plan on raking and mowing and running to the grocery store. Exciting, right?

Oh. The other day I looked out the living room window and who did I see?

Mister Henry, dining on some of the grass near the Funky Patio. I’m always delighted to see our friend, so I grabbed my iPhone. One of the windows was open and as I snapped the picture, from several feet away and inside the house, Henry heard it and ran for cover. That boy can hear everything. I cursed myself for not muting the phone before I took the picture because I don’t like disturbing him when he’s brave enough to get that close to the house. I’ve been known to delay something for a half hour or more when I see him out there.

Anyway, I’m always comforted that he’s alive and kicking and happy in his home under the shed.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
