Potpourri on Tuesday

February 6, 2018 at 9:40 am by Claudia

• I’m not sure when this feature was added, but my iPhone 7 plus has a ‘portrait’ mode. I am quite taken with it.

Here is a normal shot:

And here is portrait mode, which allows me to focus on the ZZ in the foreground. Everything else gets softened.

I like it.

• Rest in Peace, John Mahoney. He was such a wonderful actor. He didn’t start acting until later in  life, gaining fame from a production of John Guare’s House of Blue Leaves  that ran on Broadway in the 80s (also starring Swoosie Kurtz, Christine Baranski, Stockard Channing, and Ben Stiller.) That lead to his run on Frasier. Don worked with him on that show and said he was incredibly kind and nice; a good man.

• I managed to get rid of a lot of the ice on the driveway yesterday, enabling my escape to Lowes where I bought four 50 pound bags of salt. Needless to say, after getting them in my cart and then transporting them one by one to my porch, my back was in complaint mode. It’s been snowing this morning, but tomorrow is the big storm, which will bring several inches of snow along with freezing rain and ice. Help!

• There is going to be revival of the groundbreaking play, The Boys in the Band,  which will open on Broadway at some point this year. I’m proud to say that two of the nine actors are former students of mine: Jim Parsons and Brian Hutchison. Actually, now that you ‘know’ Rick, I should say “former students of ours.” We can’t take credit for their talent, but we can take credit for recognizing it when they auditioned for our MFA Acting program. We accepted both of them without hesitation. I’m so proud of them and prouder still that they are my friends to this day. You’d better believe we’re going to be in that audience.

• For those of you who are in the Resistance, I want to recommend a woman who has a page on Facebook. Some of you may already know of her – Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin. She’s a lawyer, an activist and very, very smart. I’ve found her daily Resistance Live broadcasts (at 11 am) to be a source of calm and lots of helpful information. She knows the legal world and she somehow manages to cut through all the speculation and fear that’s seems to be a part of any given day in this administration with clarity and passion. Just go to Facebook and search for Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin/Resistance Live.

Okay. it’s stopped snowing. Oh goody, not only do I have to shovel tomorrow and Thursday, but I get to shovel today, as well!

Happy Tuesday.

The Dreaded Snow

January 16, 2018 at 9:17 am by Claudia

It’s snowing.

By the time this is over, which will be tomorrow, we’ll have anywhere from 4 to 8 inches on the ground. Lovely. (I’m being sarcastic.) This sort of knocks out two days that we could use to get ready for the move to NYC.

Oh, winter, you often throw a spanner in the works, don’t you?

This weekend, it will get warmer, so I’m hoping it starts to melt some of the snow. Actually, I was hoping it would melt the huge slab of ice on our driveway where I usually park my car, but with the snow having to melt first, I doubt it.

This, my friends, is why negotiating any time spent in NYC this winter will be tricky. Cannot wait until Spring!

After having my new iPhone in my hands for about two months, I just played with Portrait Mode for the first time yesterday. It’s so neat. It easily does what I have to do with either the macro setting or a special lens on my big girl camera. It focuses on one thing and blurs the rest. I have always loved that look. Such fun!

All the photos were shot with my phone. Amazing.

We watched The Shape of Water  again last night. Extraordinary. We noticed even more the second time. It’s my favorite movie of the year and will be added to my Favorite Movie Ever list. I can’t get enough of it.

So, we’re making lists of what we need to take. We’ll drive down in Don’s car and he may keep it in the city for the week until he can drive home for his day off. Or I might drive it back on Tuesday. We’re not sure yet.

Other than that, we’re hanging in there and enjoying our time together – a collective deep breath before Don moves into overdrive with the musical.

By the way, before I forget, I have been mostly unable to leave comments on Blogger blogs. I’m signed into my Blogger account when I try to do it, but more often than not, it doesn’t work. So it’s not that I don’t care, I just can’t leave a comment. Blogger needs to get it together.

Happy Tuesday.

Thoughts on a Tuesday Morning

November 28, 2017 at 10:25 am by Claudia

A little late getting this post up as I SLEPT IN!! I am a happy camper. The time zone changes I’ve been dealing with – while only an hour difference – have seriously screwed up my sleep. Now, thank goodness, I’ll be in the same time zone for the foreseeable future.

The UPS truck arrived in my driveway yesterday morning. The driver was bring my new iPhone to me! Did I absolutely need a new phone? No. But I’ve been looking at the larger sized phones and coveting them. While we were in Chicago, my nephew (Mere’s eldest) showed me his iPhone 7+ and I seriously began thinking about a new one. I also knew that I was eligible for an upgrade on November 23rd. Mere and I (and Don, for that matter) said we wanted a larger screen with larger fonts and bigger pictures. Yours truly used to say that I didn’t want or need a bigger phone. Oh yes, I was quite vocal about it. The photo below shows my ever-evolving thinking on that subject:

On the left, the iPhone 4. Middle: iPhone 6. Right: the newest phone, the iPhone 7+. I never buy the current iPhone; I always upgrade to a slightly older model to save money.

I love it, of course. Now I can’t imagine how I got by with a smaller one. Isn’t that always the case?

Oh, before I forget: Don got through the day yesterday. His voice was much better. My wonderful sister called to check on him in the morning and when we talked about steroids, she said he absolutely should take them, that they would really help, so I called him and passed that message along. He got 3 pills, two to take yesterday and one for this morning and then he’ll be done. He thinks they really helped. (They’re still recording and will do another stint in the recording studio today.) Thank you for all your positive thoughts and prayers! He sounds a lot better.

I put this maranta in my grocery cart on Sunday. I like to rescue plants from stores like Lowes and my local grocery store. This one needs humidity and it’s always dry in here during the winter, so she accompanies me into the bathroom when I take a shower.

My sansevieria is going to flower again this year! There’s another flower stalk on the side facing the window. Hey, Mom and Dad, your baby is thriving!

Still hanging in there despite freezing temperatures. Oh, pansies, I’m going to plant more of you in the spring.

The living room yesterday afternoon. The light that comes when the trees are bare is so bright. I love it.

I’ve been having some trouble with AOL lately. Judging by the complaints I’ve seen elsewhere, I’m not the only one. Anyway, I subscribe to the email version of this blog via three different email addresses: gmail, AOL, and Yahoo. I get the gmail and Yahoo posts like clockwork. But delivery to the AOL address has been all over the place; sometimes it comes on time, sometimes it comes 10 hours later and sometimes it doesn’t arrive at all (like yesterday). Hopefully, AOL will get its act together, because it’s my main email address and I don’t want to have to deal with changing to another one. So, if you subscribe via AOL and haven’t been receiving posts lately, that’s why.

If you don’t like political commentary, stop here. I’m currently careening back and forth between happiness at being home and despair about the country. Last night, despair won. When the people running the country defend a pedophile in order to keep power, we are in desperate trouble. When that sorry excuse for a man calls a sitting Senator “Pocahontas” (meant as a racial slur) in the middle of a ceremony honoring Native American heroes while standing in front of a portrait of Andrew Jackson (of Trail of Tears infamy) – there are no words. Well, there are words, but I can’t print them here. But don’t let that distract you from the battle over the tax bill and net neutrality. Make your calls. We’re in a battle between the 1% and the rest of us. And I’m pretty sure none of my readers are in the 1%.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
